Bikers,

I don't remember anyone discussing this topic here. Post Mysore ride, I thought of bringing it here, felt it would make some difference.

How many of you guys drink beetroot juice regularly? Do you find any difference in the in performance.

I have been drinking this from long time, I stop there.

This juice is known for enhancing endurance performance as it has good amount of Nitrates. Helps one exercise longer and in reducing blood pressure. It helps in cardiovascular health.

If someone is not drinking can find the difference in 7 days after he starts drinking.

Open to know your opinions regarding the same.

Thank you for your feedbacks!!

Anil, do you welcome arm chair analysts like me too? :-P As a thumb rule, vegetables (the kind that go bad easily) are mainly meant for vitamin and mineral supply to the body (maintenance), not for calories or anything else.

Now Anil will be responsible for all beetroots in market getting exhausted then there will be a beetroot growers strike to increase the prices/give them better benefits in turn causing inflation to grow up !!!! :P

After that groupon will contact Anil to bring "AnilKadusr" branded beetroots for 9 INR a kilo…..hehehe you ail be famous all over again for non cycling reasons

If Nitrates are all you need, wouldn't detergent or fertilizer be a faster way to get it ? ;)

I would beg to differ. I have got to know from more than one source about the beet juice, though I haven't tried it. Of course, all plants should have nitrates, but looks like beet is getting some attention.

Anil, I meant, you pick any vegetable - from the drumsticks/leaves to spinach to cabbage, cucumber, blah blah. They are mostly wonderful source of various vitamins and minerals. It is tough to remember which one contains what. As you are aware, vitamins and minerals do what they do best - maintenance of bodily health. But they are micro-nutrients, which are required in small quantities. We don't know what to do with more of it or in fact will be problematic if we consume more of it. BTW, fruits are also wonderful source of vitamins and additionally contain sufficient fibres and sugars/carb too.

So, the point is that the vegetables are good for health but I would be skeptical if someone tries to link any of the fruits and vegetables with endurance or body strength.

There was in fact a study which related nitrate content in Beetroot to endurance performance [http://www.andjrnl.org/article/S2212-2672(11)01948-4/abstract].  Researchers attributes it to Vasodilation [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasodilation].

But Beetroot also has high oxalate content which increases your risk for kidney stones.  So all might not be well.

I didn't read you link Mayank. But your description just reminded me of cow urine therapy: http://www.cowurine.com/ (Link is perfectly safe for your work place :-D) I came to know from my office social forum that there are a lot of people who practice this! I keep wondering how many people would be following Moraji Desai's practice too!

Sorry. I hope the topic does not get derailed.
