Hi all,

I'm trying to get a sense of how many of us commute by cycle in our city. Also, where are the pockets with maximum density of cyclists. We can use data to figure out if new cyclists can be partnered with experienced commuters (we all know cycling in BLR takes its own skills).

If you do commute regularly (say at least once a week on an average) - can you please join this group: https://www.strava.com/clubs/171020

Please do NOT join if you are not in BLR or if you do not cycle for commuting.

The definition of 'commute' is slightly vague.. I agree. It need not be from home to office - could be to a coffee shop or a friend's place.

In spirit of the main goal - replacing vehicles on road with cycles, we will take the definition to be: If you would have made the trip even if you didn't have the cycle on hand (by some other alternate transport - car, taxi, bus, etc) then it qualifies as commute. If you are cycling only for the sake of cycling - that would be leisure ride.

Please share where appropriate. Thanks!

Also, if you do commute but do not log your rides on Strava..

Let me first try to convince you:
a. Strava is nice. Lets you see how much you have travelled at the end of the year
b. It is mostly easy to use. I have a Windows phone with no native Strava app, so there are complications - but for those of you on Android/iOS native app is available

If you are still not convinced - please consider letting me know
a. How often you commute (approx)
b. Starting point and ending point.

Thanks!

Thanks for forming the group. I have joined too.
Have been using Map My Ride for last few years, Strava looks more user friendly & with advanced options.

Would start using it & explore more :)

Thanks!

A general message for those who use other mapping apps/fitness tracking.

You maybe aware of tapiriik.com. I use it to sync my activities across Endomondo (the app installed on my phone), Strava, Runkeeper and Dropbox (just to download the data and keep it where I can see it). Tapiriik is smart enough to detect duplicates. And it tries to sync as much data as possible - the route, notes, etc. And it supports a big list of fitness tracking utilities.

From the site: "tapiriik synchronizes your fitness activities between Garmin Connect, Runkeeper, Strava, TrainingPeaks, SportTracks.mobi, Endomondo, RideWithGPS, TrainerRoad, Motivato, Velo Hero, Epson RUNSENSE, Dropbox, and Smashrun
(your heart rate, cadence, power, and temperature data syncs too)".

It works mostly fine.. There are some issues sometimes with some activities not getting synced for a long time..

The service is free if you are prepared to login once in a while and press the "sync" button on the website. If you want to not have that hassle (so syncing happens automatically a short time after you upload activity to runkeeper), you need to pay $2 per annum (larger contributions are encouraged, but not mandatory). I have used it for 2 years now.

The tapiriik source code itself is open sourced - the $2 is only for automatic sync.

Good one Karthick. I don't log my commutes(too lazy to switch the app on before starting) but commute 5 days a week 15 km each way. Starting point is Ramamurthy Nagar and ending point is Belandur(the other way around in the evening).

I'm sure there are many other lazy commuters out there who don't log their trips.

It's always better to have recorded.. After many years.. You can look back at your own records any time..
I wasn't recording. Now I have started to.
It will take you about 2seconds for not being lazy.. And the data remains forever

I enjoy strava segments and flybys (especially on weekend long rides )

Anil - thanks. But I'm afraid your commutes are going to mess up the data :) I should consider an option to exclude your rides to compute the "real" number of kms done.

No strava & lazy too do anything except cycling... Use Bike commute challenge to log miles. usually 12-15kms one way daily & any destination within 30kms(stick only to bike, anyways faster than waiting for a BMTC bus & snoring while the bus sits there in the traffic)...

Venky and all those who are too lazy to record, you can add strava widget on the home screen of your phone.
With that you can start and stop ride with a single click, it also shows your weekly progress

Thank you,
Regards

Thanks! :-)  Actually, the real reason I don't log my commutes is to keep my training rides and their numbers separate(commute miles just inflate the numbers without corresponding training benefits is my view).

I did track them for a few weeks when I moved to the new office just to get an idea of the distance and the time it was taking.

That makes sense!
Commute is like sugar(empty calories), empty workout.

I now prefer enjoying the commute, measuring it in minutes/km somehow just makes it a continual challenge (can I shave off a few min...) which takes the fun out of the ride for me. Maybe I am just wimpy ;-)
And I hate apps on the phone, I dont even have whatsapp.

Commute most days ~ 18 Km one way JP Nagar- Cessna Park in Kadubeesanahalli. Also any solo trips anywhere in the city / nearby rides with my son are on the cycle. Wife rode with us a couple of times, and sanely said no  ;-)

+1 To excluding Anil's data from the stats, Blr-Mysore does not quality as a commute IMHO

JP Nagar to HSR Layout 27th main and back. 12.5 - 13 km one way based on the route de jour. No , I don't use apps while commuting.

Thanks Chiddu.

I finally created the form for non-app users. Will share it separately. You need to fill in a short form - hope that is ok.
