First, please get familiar with some terms (I was not familiar with these until lunch time today):

Randonneuring: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randonneuring
Brevet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brevet_%28cycling%29
Audax: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audax_%28cycling%29

Ok, now the question. Our month-end long rides have typically tended to be long distance rides. I would like to take this to a new level and perhaps get it branded as Randonneur, Brevet, or Audax. This will be serious kick-ass long distances (~200kms). So, I am thinking month-end long distance rides alternating between recruiting newbies into riding around 100+ kms and Randonneuring (~200kms). Basically, Randonneuring rides will be out of bounds for newbies, anyone who has not participated in 100k will be discouraged from joining the Randonneuring rides.

Suggestions? Thoughts? Constructive criticism? Offer to help?

~~ Yogesh.

I especially love the following part of Randonneuring (Excerpt from the url):

To ensure that the correct route is followed and no short cuts are taken, the rider must pass through a series of locations known as "controls". The rider carries a "brevet card", onto which information is added at each control, and this card is presented to the organisers at the end of the ride as proof that the route was followed. There are two types of controls. The first is a "manned control", usually at a village hall or cafe, at which someone waits to stamp the riders cards as they pass through. On longer rides a manned control may be a shop, where the rider must obtain a till receipt showing the date and time. The second type of control is an "information control", more commonly called an "info control", where the rider must answer a question. For example, if the card asks, "From the signpost at the T-Junction, how far is it to Oadby?", the rider must find the signpost and write the answer on the brevet card.

You would need their help to get the events recognized.

Looking at how much fun folks seemed to have had last Nandi ride, I'd
have left your month end long rides as what they are: A no-pressure
community outing. Maybe you want to join hands with folks like RACF
and start off another event which is more "formal"?

Quickly scanned the blog. Where is this happening in India? Why is this not happening in Bangalore - the town with Ironmen, Raam'ers, and other dedicated bicyclists? Why? I am wondering how much effort it would take to organize such a Randonneuring event. Any idea anyone?

They have finished the 200 and 300km events. 400 is next month I
think. See the calender here:

Rushi, Believe it or not, Bangalore's bicycling calendar is already pretty busy. August 1st ride was indeed a lot of fun. Which was the reason I was suggesting going for something more formal on alternate months. With demand, we could make alternate Randonneuring and Long distance bicycling every alternate week.

We also have an issue with moving things into first gear. We discussed doing a very informal triathlon a few months back. It's not yet taken off the ground. So, I would like to have the Randonneuring take off the ground by accommodating it in between the month-end rides.

Is that 400kms in a day?

If it's 2 days, reaction = what's so great about that? If it's 400kms in one day, then it's time to bring our pants down and say"jahanpannah! tussi great ho"

I think the upper time limits allow about 15kmph speed. So [I think]
400 has to be done in about 27 hours.

Hi all,

I know this may is OT to the Randonneur'ing, Brevet'ing, and Audax'ing
in Bangalore ....

Was thinking if we can do a Bike Hash http://www.bikehash.freeservers.com/bashbasics.pdf

or some Treasure Hunt to make things interesting and involve all types
of riders.

Cheers

Hi All,

The guy to talk to for anything related to Randonneuring, Brevet,
Audax Rides in India is Satish Patki aka TROLL
[ http://cyclists.in/profile/troll?xg_source=profiles_memberList ]

The Randonneur webpage is here :

I guess three events are already done :

300km along Mumbai-Nasik Highway (150km out and return) :

300km along Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway (150km out and return) :

Between now and September, another three rides planned - 400km, 200km
and 600km :

What a coincidence...

I have done some base work on this for the last 5 weeks, to bring it
to Bangalore, and have been speaking to Vasu, Nelly, Rakesh, Ravi.
Will share the blue print shortly. Infact, briefed Mr. Bhaskar Rao on
this and he was all for it, to flag off every event, and also ride in
one of the BRMs in April next year.

Will send across the Document from home, and also give some texture.
Where it is stuck now is with help on commited volunteers to run the
show.

Will send a detailed note soon. But going by the enthu we have, am
sure we will have huge turnouts for the events.

Also, the calendar needs to be decided within Sept 15th, to qualify
for PBP 2011. Will cover all this in the mail. Have some routes in
mind which also will be covered.

Venkat, You are totally awesome. Let's collaborate on the Randonneuring. It appears to be very Pune/Mumbai/Maharastra focussed at this time. Since we cannot go to Pune or Mumbai all the time, let's bring the event to Namma Bengaluru.

We could have Georg Leuzinger's Anchetty route (perhaps in Sep) be our first unofficial Randonneur event. It's approximately about 205kms. What say?

Hi Yogesh and Venkat:
other good rides would be:
  • via Chintamani to Horsley hills (AP)and back (Hill climb similar to nandi!) manjula and a small group did it some months back , 250km+
  • via Magadi to Ramnagar-channapatna-magadi and back, 180 km shorter western loop)
  • via Magadi-and longer western loop
  • tumkur-Kunigal-Magadi loop
on the western front t here are many more loops in great landscapes and low traffic roads
if possible round trips are always preferable!just  look at the maps and the possibilities are without limits!

AWESOME! I wanted to do a BRM, so that i can try for a spot in PBP 2011 (there's was a slight chance of me being in paris next yr, so wanted to pounce on it). And was then thrilled to know that india has an official audax club! And just when i thought i should go to mumbai/pune to do a BRM.... the BRM comes to Bangalore itself! Ahhhhh..... i love bangalore!

The route has to be quickly decided so that it can go for approval to Audax Parisien, if its intended to be held in sept..... And if it does happen, it would be awesome stage for people trying/training for ultraBOB as well

Sounds like a plan !
Let's fix dates and start working towards it;

Main thing to arrange would be the accommodation !

We may have to consider KTM dates to avoid any clashes.

May be it could be month end long ride.

Hilarious, I was just looking at this event here in the states.

And then I came across your post. I was thinking of doing this - I have yet to do something that long. The longest I have done is 165 miles or so - and that was pretty painful. 300k - I think it will take me 13 hours to do (I hope).

Good luck.

Dear Friends, I am really happy to see the enthusiasm this is generating so far. This is an idea that's in evolution. There are several of you out there with great ideas, hopes, and desires. In the true spirit of community based collaboration, why don't we do an online brainstorm? I have created a web page titled Bangalore Brevets. This is going under the aegis of Bangalore Bicycling Club. Hence the term - BBC-BB. Request you to add your thoughts to the following page:

Guys, I have added a section called "Paris-Brest-Paris" to the webpage: http://groups.google.co.in/group/bangalore-bikers/web/sandalwood-brevets

Are you considering going to Paris next year to participate in the PBP event? Please add your name to this list.

For those of you who do not know about PBP, here is more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris%E2%80%93Brest%E2%80%93Paris

It's a 1,200km ride. It's in stages. It happens once in 4 years. It's happening in 2011. There's a quota on number of riders by country. This quota has been relaxed for India because PBP wants more riders from this country. I heard that the cost is approx Rs.1 lak for air-ticket and participation. Interested? This may be an once in a life time opportunity :-)

Cheers!

Super work Yogesh.

Also people, as Sudhir said, PBP is happening next year and we need
more people giving it a shot.

It is about 1200 Kms and time cut off is 90 hours. The qualifyiers,
routes etc needs to be decided before this month end.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris%E2%80%93Brest%E2%80%93Paris
http://www.paris-brest-paris.org/pbp2011/index2.php?lang=en&cat=accueil&page=edito

We can also have 1000K ride (Bangalore-Chennai-Pondy and back) if
folks qualify all brevets.

Even if one person goes from here to PBP (since this is the first time
India is participating), it will be worth the effort and a huge

Samim told me he was intending to do PBP. (and he's already qualified for it through the RAAM qualification)

I would be doing it only if im in france, and earning euros. (which is what one of the forks in my future plans will take me to)

And 90 hrs is a pretty relaxed cutoff time, where u can afford to take ample sleep breaks, if u r not riding to win it. Of course, all this if u have really trained well for it. And the fun part is that its a no-support-crew race...... U have to sleep on park benches, eat in the roadside shops...... a lovely way of exploring the culture.

This means that you and I will ride with Samim (i.e., if you go to
France and I get a job in Europe by then to fund myself)....

Or rather.... We will start with Sam, and may be see him when he laps
us.

But atleast the BBC-BB page has our names ahead of Samim.... :-P We
have a headstart!

I, being a new entrant to the cycling community, have been very
anxious to do the 300 Km in a day, just to test how far I can push.

Pretty happy to come back home and see this thread !!! Like Venkat mentioned - a super coincidence.

Venkat has been digging up info about this over the last month and a couple of us did brainstorm on how we wanted to make this happen for Bangalore (maybe south India) and have already started some basic ground work on this. Wanted to have more concrete details before we shouted it out :)

But Bangalore Bikers are an awesome enthusiastic lot !
Good to see the enthusiasm and route suggestions on the BBC-BB page - http://groups.google.co.in/group/bangalore-bikers/web/sandalwood-brevets
Very helpful.

The rough plan we had from the last meeting

- Get some good routes (your recommendations will help out here. Keep em coming)
- Have a couple of mock rides leading to these kinda distances
- Try and get a ride calendar out there with some tentative dates (try and take advantage of the good weather ahead of us
- Work with the Pune guys and the officials and get a concrete go ahead with the route details (there is some administrative ok-ing that needs to be done within the next month or so)
- Have some recommended qualification for the races (while everyone might want to jump on their bikes and belt out a 200km, we want to try and ensure sustainable racing/training)
- Get a concrete idea on costs and volunteering requirements.

Are there more questions ? We can collate it and ensure everything is answered ( by us, the pune guys, or the paris officials. Or we just make em up :D )

Dream and train hard :)

BBC rocks !

Yogs - Tried reaching you. Call me once you are free.

Ok guys, The excellent crowd at BBC is going to fill up the number of route suggestions coming in. We will need to get the rubber meet the road. Rohan and Venkat, will start off a thread offline to discuss communicating with the guys in Pune to get events in Namma Bengaluru recognized.

I'm pretty happy to see this thread too. Currently torn between volunteering and riding :-) One attractive thing about the brevets is the non-competitive nature.

Keep up the great work, guys!

Just in case you are wondering if all the enthusiasm of bringing
Brevets has died down... hold on, we are very much on to it.

Some work and other commitments has made us go a little slow, but more
or less the plan is getting finalized.

We are in the process of making the route charts and time stations,
tentative schedules etc and will be sending out the routes for
approval soon (By Sunday is the target)

Need all your help on this:

1. If you have a good road worthy route in mind, please do plot if on
gpsies / mapymyride / garmin file and update on the BANGALORE BREVETS
page, or reply to the mail.
brevets)

2. Please ensure that you identify point every 80-120 kms on the
route, a Cafe or Toll booth or ATM which can give a printed receipt
with time and date stamp. THIS IS VERY CRITICAL for us, in case if we
dont have enough volunteers to man the time-station, we can get the
receipts collected at the end of the ride as a surrogate!

3. This is a self-supported ride, which doesn't mean there will be
ZERO help. We are all riders, and we all do help one another. Having
said that, the idea of not having medical support or Water station is
to simulate PBP environment here. Even if 1 rider participates in the
next years event, trust me, It is worth all the effort of conducting
the event.

4. Every rider who completed the series of qualifying brevet will be
eligible for the medal (approx. cost of the medal is 10 Euros) for
every ride and a super randonneur medal too.

5. The cost of each ride will be decided before the brevet. Rest
assured, this would be bare minimum, to cover the basic cost of
printing the brevet card, transportation cost for the volunteer
(depends on the volunteer, frankly :) ), courier cost to France, Medal
cost. To give you an idea, 600K BRM conducted in Pune is about Rs.
800. We will try and keep it to bare minimal.

6. The first BRM will be by invitation - no offence meant, but we
don't want too many people 'giving it a shot'. Remember, it is not a
tour, the rides have time cut offs, and no support. So, it will be a
'risk' (for want of a more polite word) to have someone who has never
done a century pedalling out 200K in 12 hours. Trust folks understand.
So how do we invite? The thought process is get maximum people
register, and we will use surrogates like ur past ride data (dailymile/
garmin etc) or ref-checks (sounds like corporate?) to invite. Anybody
can ride, and the dream is to have a huge turnout. But the first one
will have some filtering...

7. The earliest BRM possible will be in October. We will try and get 2
dates for each qualifying brevets for PBP. In case you miss out on one
or a late joinee, you will have an alternate option.

8. Last but not the least - Please start updating the routes on the
page or send it on mail or reply to the mail here. With checkpoints
(ATM/Cafe etc). Just ensure that you don't repeat the same stretch one
way. It can be a loop/or a single lap (like Bangalore to Chennai and
back) but no multiple laps.

Thanks, and look forward for huge response.

Regards, Venkat

"Pune took the lead at a time when people had begun to believe that,
this Randonneuring activity was Mumbai centric!
Now Bangalore is rolling in all cylinders firing. They want to do a
full PBP series together with Pune! A full series is the minimum BRMs
required for a PBP year the 200,300,400 and 600.
We cannot believe this is happening to us!The sleeping Giant is about
to wake up!."

The sleeping Giant is about to wake up....

Await the date confirmation from BBC group...

Till then, practice hard.

Remember - 15 kmph is the bare minimum for every ride... And the clock
never stops - It is GROSS time.

Also, you can start submitting ur PBP rides to UMCA too, and shoot for
a medal there too... (Year rounder etc)

If you want to know what I am talking of - check this excel sheet link
- http://www.ultracycling.com/standings/umcstandings.php - Download
the 2010 standings and search for my name... :-P

Venkat, a HUGE THANKS from everyone in BBC for the great amount of time and effort you have been putting into this effort. Soon Brevet Club will bring the same "eyes glittering with pride" look that the RACF guys have when they speak about TFN :-)

Every one of these things help put Bangalore on the world map and neutralize the -ve energy created by CWG, Thanks again for doing that!

The force behind this was BOTS/BBC and urself....

Let the BRMs get the final nod, and let the first Brevet happen
successfully... That would call for a massive celebration! :)

Dreaming of 200 participants for the first one. And that can happen
only in Bangalore. :-)
