Hello all,

I plan to take my cycle on an Indigo airlines domestic flight. I talked to their customer support, re: charges. What they told me, pretty much matched what they say on their website.

--- --- ---

Which all articles are considered as special baggage and how can I carry it ?

IndiGo will levy a fee of INR 1000/- (or equivalent in foreign currency) for domestic flights and INR 2000 (or equivalent in foreign currency) for International flights , for any Special Baggage like Sports/Skiing equipment, golf bags, bicycle, surf boards, LCD and LED TVs of size more than 39 inches, and all other large and/or odd-sized items, including cartons, whose dimensions (L+W+H) exceed 158 cms (62 inches), submitted as Checked Baggage. This fee will be applied over and above any Excess Baggage charges that might be applicable.
--- --- ---

I plan to disassemble my bike & carry it in a carton; the dimensions will be more than 62inches. So looks like I will need to pay Rs1000, in addition to any excess baggage weight.

Wondering if anyone has taken their bike on Indigo airlines. How was the experience? Can I expect them to waive any of the charges (the special handling fee or some of the excess baggage charges)?

thanks, -{db}.

Dhawal,

I flew Indigo to Delhi and back last month with my bicycle. In Bangalore I was charged Rs. 1000 extra for the bicycle, but the same wasn't applied in Delhi. So, YMMV - there is no guarantee - be prepared to pay the fee and rejoice if you are not charged!

Regards,
Arvind

Thanks Arvind.  Good to know that.  Am hoping too that I will have some luck with some of the charges.

Btw, how had you packed the bike?  I plan to take the disassembled bike in a carton, similar to how it comes from the factory.  Rakesh @ RR said the rear derailleur does_not need to be removed, as that is how the bike comes from the factory.  But I recall other posts on this group, saying the rear derailleur was bent etc. in air-transit, in some cases, when_not removed.  Comments?

thx,  -{db}.

I took a bike bag (basic Nashbar bag) - it was lighter and easy to fold away and reuse on the return. I would've gone with a box if my flight was not direct. My packing involved removing the wheels, pedals, handlebar, turning the stem towards the top tube and lots of padding, tape and large zip ties. I did remove my RD and tuck it in between the dropouts. I used the plastic protectors for both dropouts and protectors for the hub ends on the wheels after removing the QRs. These protectors are usually available on request from your LBS, they throw these away from new bikes.

On one flight the protector from the hub (facing the outside) slipped away and as a result, the hub end tore through the bag. No other damage, the bag will need to be repaired. I just taped the inside of the bag on the way back and repositioned the wheel to not test the same spot again.

My bike was the Ogre with disc brakes and I also removed the rotors and packed them separately to make sure they didn't get bent.

Regards,
Arvind
