Hi

One more incident of bike being stolen. I have lost my bike Trek 4300
(2010) which was parked in front of my house (within the compound). It
was stolen in the afternoon (guess it would be between 2.30 pm - 3 pm)
on Saturday.

Pls let me know in case you come across any suspect sellers.

Thanks,
Rajaram

Rajaram,

I can understand how much pain it is to loose a bike, as bikes are not just a frame with two wheels for us. It is much more than that and close to our heart.

It's really unfortunate to hear often about bikes being stolen these days.....!!!

Siva

Thanks Sudhir, Siva.

@Siva - Yes - its a pain; especially when you dont think about the
commercial value attached to it and do everything to look after it.

@Sudhir - Yes, I do have the frame number and had also registered it
on the Trek website. But the police was not keen to take the frame
number and was wanting to have the bill only.

I hope I get it back - though not very optimistic.

Rajaram,

My experience with the police officers was not very encouraging. I think my complaint was their amusement for the day, "yaake eppaththu saavara sir (why 20thousand rupees)" was constantly being asked. In my case since it was stolen from within the apartment, they were pushing me to get compensation from the security agency, which I am pursuing. Unfortunately for me, I don't even have the frame number, have given them a copy of the bill and a few photographs of the cycle.

jagan

Rajaram,

I hope you get your bike back.

Even our experience with police officers was not very nice when my
friend lost his Trek 4300.

Once someone loses his/her cycle, the possibility of getting our bikes
insured comes up.

I had tried sometime back to get an insurance for my Bianchi from
Oriental Insurance, but could not succeed.

However, I heard from here and there that some people have succeeded
in getting their bikes insured (I do not know any in person).

RR cycle at Madiwala told me that they have got some bikes (around
12K) insured. I have asked him to get the details.

I came across this article while googling. Not sure what the current
status is.

Is it possible to have a group bike insurance scheme ? :) Can anyone who
has contacts with insurance folks explore ?

This article does not address the other part of insurance: what you will have to face when trying to get the insurance company to pay in the event of your cycle being lost.

I have said it earlier on this mailing list, and I'll say it again...do not just purchase the insurance, but look carefully at the small print, and ask the person who is selling you the insurance, really pointed questions. Will they pay if your cycle is stolen from public parking spots? If it is stolen from your basement parking or your company parking? What if it is found in a seriously damaged, unusable condition?  If you find the answers not satisfactory, do not buy the insurance. Thinking that "it's only Rs.100" misses the point....why pay even Rs.100 to some insurance company,  if you will not be able to get it to pay?

When we lost our cycle (it was stolen from our 1st floor balcony), we were told that unless we could *prove* that the cycle was kept in the flat would we be able to get the insurance money...and that too, only we had an FIR stating that someone had broken into our apartment and stolen it...stealing from the balcony counted as entering an open house and stealing...not covered under the insurance policy!

Insurance companies are just not accountable in India, and routinely hide behind the clauses of their contract, to the most unethical degree. So be sure that you don't pay the money for the insurance and add the trouble of endlessly chasing up the insurance company to the woe of losing your cycle, and the cost and effort of replacing it.

What is worse is that if the policy-holder is in an influential position (where s/he can decide on the number of company employees who will buy insurance from the company), these thorny clauses are not invoked, and the insurance is paid with much less effort on the part of the policy holder

Even when everything is above board, there may be a clause to state that the first, say, 4 or 5K is not going to be re-imbursed!

So...do study your insurance policy carefully; you may decide, as we did, that insurance is often just a waste of money and effort.

A group cycle insurance scheme would be good, because it would protect individual policy-holders with the implied threat that if the insurance company does not settle a genuine claim, the whole group could withdraw paying the insurance premiums in future.

Lossing is bike is a difficult experience, especially after you have
formed a bond with the bike.

I lost my trek 4300 a few months back. I could not believe that I
could lose a locked bike from office. I did not get the bike back. Of
course, the police will not help you.

With my current bike, these are the precautions that I am taking at
office
a) Lock the back wheel and the frame using a Decathlon bike lock.
b) Lock the frame and the front wheel to a fixed metal clamp using a
sturdy chain and a Godrej Lock.
c) I informed the security guards that the bike is a costly one.

At home, I keep the bike on my 7th floor balcony when we are at home
and inside the house when we are not.

Regards,

Luckose.

Deepa is right. RR did inform me that he has an insurance scheme for
bicycles. But what is more imp is whether we would the insurance in
case the bike is lost. One of my friend had lost a motorcycle (mind
you motorbikes are registered vehicles) and he was made to run around
for years ... not sure whether he still has got any money...again one
would get only the depreciated amount not the actual value and
insurance companies have their own way of depreciation.

For the time being taking care of the bike woudl be the only solution.

We could all buy bike insurance under BBC, the premiums will be cheaper and we will have ease of getting claims processed with such large numbers.

Can the mods please explore the possibility!

Please take up the Pedal Cycle Insurance for all those who want to
protect themselves against theft...

I just got my Trek 4300D insured... the invoice value was around 30K
(including accessories) and the premium worked to Rs 640.

The details of the Insurance Policy can be checked out here -

Hey Dhiraj, please do not presume this point. This has been discussed as a contentious point for insurance on the forum. Public parking spots = building basement and office parking.

The "Exclusion" sections seems to suggest burglary will be covered unless
the accessories and not the bicycle is stolen:

Exclusion

Section I

Company shall not be liable to make any payment under the Section in respect of: -

  1. Consequential loss depreciation wear and tear mechanical breakdowns failure or breakages nor for damage caused by overloading or strain nor for loss or damage to accessories by burglary, housebreaking, theft or larceny unless pedal cycle is stolen at the same time.

I says that insurance cover is not applicable if, only the accessories, like a tail lamp or wheel, are stolen, but if the whole cycle is stolen, then the insurance cover is applicable.

The important question that needs to be asked is how likely are you to get paid in case of an eventuality? Remember, insurance companies are extremely helpful when they sell you a policy, but notoriously bad when it comes to claims. They are known to deny claims for the flimsiest of reasons. Have we ever had a case where a claim was actually honoured on a high end cycle?

The reason for my doubt is the premium that the OP posted is extremely low (640 on a 30K article). I think this is roughly what I pay for my motorcycle, which is harder to steal and infinitely easier to trace. To me, it looks a very risky proposition for the company, why would they get into it if they expected to pay?

jagan

Thanks Rohan.

Even I have contacted a friend for group insurance. As soon as they
get back, I can provide an update.

Initial inputs
1. There should be a SPOC who would collect the insurance amount on
behalf of the group - it is unlikely that the insurance co would do
this.
2. There should be a valid bill/ receipt for the bicycle purchased.
3. Ideally the group should be registered, if not, as in our case,
they can pay the individual member who has lost the bike.
4. Insurance is not just from theft - its also for damages due to
accidents and natural calamities.
5. BBCh watch out - they do not cover damages due to racing.

As mentioned these are just initial inputs and its not concrete. I
have asked questions like 'if a bike has not been locked, then would
insurance co pay for the theft ..' , ' how would they calculate
depreciation .. (some of us have high end bikes, and it would not be
fair if the depreciation is calculated the same way as for a cheaper
bike, more to do with resale values - not just drop in prices in terms
of %). I am just waiting for them to come back and probably post that
we can have an FAQ from the group.
