Nearest Towns: Kanakapura
Distances: 70 km from Bangalore.
Route: Bangalore - Kanakapura Road - Harohalli - Dodda Maralawadi -
Koonala Doddi - Bilikal Rangaswamy Betta.
KSRTC and private buses are available to Kanakapura from KR Market
which passess through Harohalli. From Harohalli KSRTC and private
buses are available to Dodda Maralawadi. From Dodda Maralawadi very
few KSRTC buses are available to Koonala Doddi. The trek path starts
from Koonala Doddi. Private cabs are available Harohalli. Apart from
the Trek route from Koonala Doddi, there is jeep track till the peak
from Kanakapura.
Difficulty Level: Easy.
Best Time To Visit: September to February.
Summary: Bilikal Rangaswamy Betta also called as Bilikal Betta lies in
Kanakapura Taluk of Bangalore Rural District in Karnataka. There is a
temple dedicated to Lord Rangaswamy at the peak of Bilikal Betta. The
temple construction is such that its roof is a huge rock. The temple
priest lives near to the temple and is the only person living at the
peak. Bilikal Rangaswamy Betta belongs to the Eastern Ghats and is
filled with shrub forest. Elephants and other medium sized animals can
be spotted in these forests during the night.
There are two access routes to the top of the hill. The first route is
a jeep track that is accessible from Kanakpura. After the Kanakpura
bus stop, there is a small circle before the one which goes to
Mekedatu. At the former circle, a left turn and further enquires would
take you to the top. However, i wouldnt recommend it for trekking - it
might be a good experience biking on this.
The hiking trail has a different approach route. At Harohalli on
Kanakpura Road (about 30 kms from Banashankari), take the road
adjacent to the bus stand towards Maralawadi/Doddamaralawadi (11 kms)
and continue past Devarahalli to Onaaladoddi (another 5 kms) where you
can dump your modes of transport and start trekking.
The difficult part might be finding the beginning of the trail. But
then, its no big deal as you know what hill u are climbing!! After
fighting through some shrubs, you will eventually reach the well-laid
out trail to the top by devotees of Lord Rangaswamy whose shrine is at
the top.
FOOD: Hotels are Available at Harohalli (15km away). Shops selling tea
and snacks are available at Dodda Maralawadi. No shops are available
at Koonala Doddi and afterwards, so going with packed food and water
is essential.
Important Phone Numbers:
Permission: None required.

biking conversations on the world famous "Bangalore Bikers Club" :)
are you a part of the bicycle racing scene?
Visit www.bangalorebicyclechampionships.com for more details
In the initial invite from Harsha, it says that the distance is
'approx 50 kms', which will be like 5 kms plus or minus.
Estimating the distance roughly around 55 kms, we might reach the
destination by 0830 or 0900 hrs,
and spend around 2 hours near the hill, leave by 1100 or 1130 hours
and reach back Bangalore (estimating 4 hours for the return journey,
as it might be hot and traffic density will be high), will be around
1530 or 1600 hrs.
Breaks are not considered in the above time estimate, you can add
another half an hour or 45 mins for the same.
And yes, total time taken is purely based on individuals capability.

Needless to say, this ride was good and different from other rides
involving hiking in it. To add to it, my brother took some cycling
experience too. You all were great company, thanks!
Chiddu proved again how good his stamina is, both in biking and
hiking. Prem, Sreeharsha and Vivek were good too. The rest of us - Me,
Sanjay(my bro), Sharath and Vishy trailed them in hiking. Vishy, even
with his bad toe, managed to lead us most of the time biking - is it
him or the Colnago or him+Colnago ? :) Not to forget the almost-lost-
key incident. I don't know how tough it would have been to cut open
the lock, if we had not got the key back ! Whoever is doing this ride
again, please be careful with your belongings !
P.S - Breakfast and lunch at Jayaram's canteen (Udupi hotel),
Harohalli was finger-licking-good !
Here are some snaps of this ride n hike -

And regarding my toe., saturday evening I visited my doctor, by that
time, it was looking like a rotten lemon, and immediately rushed to
doctor,
who later opened my toe and cleaned, and tied a big band-age around
it. Its painful now, but am relieved to a great extent.
Thanks to all who bike'd and hike'd on saturday. Will definitely
wanna do once again.
Cheers!!

@ Georg: I have heard a lot about you being insane when it comes to
sprinting on bike and esp you being supportive to fellow riders.
Thanks man ! And, more especially for your discovery of the serene
water stream near Anchetti. I had the best swim of my lifetime
there :) The map which you have made mirrors your perfection !
Be the same - the supportive and the insane biker ! ;)
Cheers,

Isn't it time to start a new thread for this ride?
thanks,
Badri
I had a tough time looking for maps when I biked Western Ghats,
thought it was shame that we don't have district wise road maps for
many districts. Map myIndia does not give you directions other than NH
either.
Would love to collect a few it will be tremendously useful too...
I was watching this video clip in youtube about bike tourism in UK and
it dates back to 1950s..thought it's time for us to live those good
old days too..

I was surprised to see the the maturity of the organised bike tour.
Every aspect is taken care w.r.t. food, travel, safety and fun.
Lots to still learn from it though it's a vintage clip.
Time to show this to KSTDC officials who were planning for bike
tourism:)
More importantly, where are the SOI maps sold? I would like to check
out a few.
I had checked each and every stationary store in Avenue Road prior to
my bike trip and realized they are good for academic books only.
cheers,,
Badri
