It surely does not help if one falls flat on the face. Otherwise it definitely helpa to a great extent.
I have witnessed a guy falling down on the road during a descent at a 40+kmph speed during one of the rides. His hemet cracked but the guy escaped head injury.... Depends on how awkward the position will be when someone falls. How you manage yourself (reflex & response ) during a fall surely matters a lot.

If some one dies in an accident..we cant call it purely becos of negligence... I call it "fate"..
No body was there at the spot when this incident happenned, we shldnt come to conclusion or say anything which might hurt the sentiments of his family and friends...

Yes head injuries. No mention about he wearing the helmets.
Bike was provided by resort, looks like BSO, seeing the image of it. No idea how well the bike was maintained.
No traffic, it was a trail, he went into drain after hit a stone.
Looks like sort of negligence.

You are right, am sorry we need to call it FATE.
If you are firm believer of that, I wonder some time, why do you use tire liners, "a puncture has to happen will happen at any cost"
Or even helmet for that matter
