Stolen from where? Inside your residence or out?

How did you lock the bike?

I am sorry for your loss. I feel if you can share some details of how you had parked the bike and how it got stolen etc then we could learn from you and not make those mistakes.

Best,
Vasu.

Hi All,

It got stolen from my residence where I have parked and locked with BTWin lock in the ground floor.

Theft happened on August 19th between 1 am to 6am.One more similar case have been registered in BTM Layout(August 17th) check fitness through travel site in FB.

Never ever park the bikes outside the house, always carry inside home, only that is the precaution.

I am sorry for this case Soumya. Hope to find your bike soon.

This is the second case in a month where a bike is lost.

Let us all keep guidelines in securing bike - "Always keep the bike inside home and lock if required. Never keep it outside home"

We keep adding general guidelines that may help in maintaining/securing bike so all our bikes can be protected. How about printing our names/painting with some color (not odd) somewhere on own bike so can easily identify?

Lets never buy a bike in seconds without verifying its ownership.. we should check for the bills or make sure the frame number is proper.. this would definitely help in stopping thefts..

This was the lock I have used to tie.

I guess they have tried burning it first you can see the burn mark, when it didn't work and then cut it.

A friends' bike was stolen from IndiraNagar 80ft Double Road (near Sancy's laundry). He had used two chains to lock to the grill and his friend's motorcycle. Both the chains were cut and the bike was gone.

PS. They didn't take the motorcycle BTW :-)

May be people who post up for selling their bikes should also mention the serial number in the email so that the buyer knows it is genuine?

hell, i dont even know the serial number of my bikes.

May be etch the name of the owner on the frame. Don't think that should compromise the rigidity of the frame. I remember earlier we got stainless steel tiffin carriers etched. (Old timers would know what I mean) Something like that ?

That, or someone didn't want to leave a piece of work unfinished.

This means that the thief would have been at the spot for quite a while. I know the decathlon lock takes about 15 mins to cut with a sharp cutter. We had a customer who had locked his bike and lost the keys. He took the bike to a nearby locksmith who cut the cable in under 15mins.

Given that he/she tried to burn the lock as well - add another 5 - 7 mins. He /she would have been at the spot for minimum 30 mins.

If the bike is not sold then the thief would need to buy stuff like tyres, tubes, chain etc. may be all bike shops should keep an eye for the bikes that come for servicing. I know it is a long shot but may be give it a chance.

Suggest the owner to go meet the folks at RR cycles, Jayanth, TnT, BOTS etc shops that a bike has been stolen.

If I am not wrong It is clearly mentioned on the tag attached to the lock that it is not useful in poor security areas.
One can use it to lock during day time for a few mins shopping close the parking vicinity, but cant rely on that to park the bike outside the whole night.. after all its just a metal cable inside the lock which can be cut out easily using a simple cutting pliers.

There are lot of things one can use to verify the name.. one can ask the owner to produce the id proof and photo proof.. there is nothing wrong in asking for such proofs when your intention is alright.. at least the frame number could be authenticated.. In case the seller is not the first owner of the bike we can always ask him to get details of it's previous owner , as I know no one buys such precious bikes without keeping records of his/her's phone number/ email id.. after all it only matters how much the buyers are ethical in that matter..

Sorry to hear about the bike loss.

I personally feel it makes lot of sense, when we are bit more friendly with our neighbors and for that matter police also.
Something of this kind can be easily altered if we create more people who care for us.

Just to quote my own example, other day my cousion was riding my bike for visiting a near by place. A police person has stopped him and asked him why are you riding this bike, where did you get it. When he told about me, they said fine, you can go. Most of the police people in my area have rode my bike. They also feel so good I speak to them and treat them as a human being. They keep asking about my rides.

It makes a difference!!!!

We can DIY a bike alarm in less than 50 bucks! All you need is a buzzer and a switch.. And the right place to keep them, so that they remain unnoticed.

The only issue might be the sensitivity of the alarm.
You dont want the alarm to be triggered by a wind or someone just touching your bike while parking next to it.
If you turn on the security alarm, say while you park in the office parking, there is high chance that someone might accidentally touch it while parking next to your bike.
If you see the videos on the site, it seems that the device is too sensitive.
The utility of this device depends on how accurately it can distinguish an accidental vibration from a vibration caused by a thief trying to steal the bike :)

Better solution would be a motion sensor, i.e moving d cycle without unlocking it shall cause the alarm.. the odometer's sensor signal can be made use of .. the existing odometer sensor works on wheel's rotation which will not be usefull if the thief carries the cycle without rotating the wheels.. in such case we need a motion sensor which senses the movement of the frame itself..

Securing the bike to the compound grill is a bad idea.. I have seen few cycles being stolen from my neighborhood (Simple, low end one's) that were secured to the grill of the compound.

the best preferred option is to carry inside the house (Even if its carrying it up the stairs) and the next best is to secure it somewhere inside away from the outside view "and" secured firmly.

Don't know what bike you bought, but, if it is a MTB and has QR for saddle and front wheel then you can remove both saddle and wheel when you park at night.

Pradeep,

She has the small size one! The weight that decathlon mentioned for S size is 14.5. I extended it to 16 as she might have (loads nd loads of :-P ) fittings. 16 kg is conservative!

Ah, the ones that can be opened with a BIC pen (of a cheap Rs.5/- Nataraj ball pen) ?
Check some of the past discussion on bicycle locks, including right way of locking.

BTW, the burn marks on Soumya's lock, are probably burns caused by pouring some acid. Few months back, there was a theft in our layout, where the thieves used very high rpm power-tools, which apparently make very little noise, that can be easily masked, to cut through 10mm grill bars. No one realized the loss until next morning. The thing about high rpm power-tools, was something told by police, citing the reason why owners didn't hear anything.

Keeping cycle indoors, as others have noted, is the most secure option.

OMG.. I just read the thread now. Didn't realise so much gyaan was already out there.

I think a simple solution is to:

a) metal etch your name on the frame - go to a store which sells utensils and ask them if they have that machine which does it.
b) paint your name on the frame
c) lock the frame securely to the grill.
d) remove both saddle and front wheel from the bike at night. - keep a mark on the seat post for your height.
e) remove rear quick release from the bike and let the wheel be there.

When I bought my first bike I used to carry a big chain and a Godrej Navtal lock in the bag. Damn idea was totally impractical. So I figured I should just remove my QR's while parking in front of shops etc. It worked for me!

Now that biking is big in BLR we have newre bikes, new stores, etc and also new start ups for stealing bikes. Guess we have to go to the next step and remove saddle, wheels from bike while parking. I think that's how they do it in the Big Apple. Folks who have been there can share more info.  I've never been to US.

Befriend the stores that you frequent. WFM. Most of my regular haunt
folks know my bike and keep an eye. Take the saddle post.
These are some of the things I've seen in NY/SFO

Front wheel secured - somebody had dismanted the rest of the bike and gone off
Frame secured - Wheels have goone *poof*
Saddle post stolen.

So you need to secure every separate part.

I stay in an apartment and I park in the basement in my allocated parking lot. I use the thick chain (the same one sowmya has a pic of :-( ) and I ensure that this chain goes around the back wheel, the frame and the front wheel. Then I have a long thick chain that ties the front and back wheel of the bike to a pillar. The saddle is not secured.

Of course, if the thief can get inside my apartment and then use a gas cutter, then he can cut off both with no noise and then carry the bike out! I guess that is a risk I have to live with, else I will have to carry the cycle (trek 7100) 3 floors up!

But where do these thieves sell the cycle? Most people (even educated software engineers) think the bikes cost only around 10 - 12k. Not sure how the thieves know the real value of the cycle ...

I saw these at decathlon. Didn't buy them, because they were too heavy. After this incident planning to buy it and always have them on the grill.

There is no real fool proof method to prevent this. All we can do is slow the process by having multiple chains/locks.

One of the cops in my area (Jayanagar 9th block) told me that these ppl always prefer riding the bike than pushing it, maybe removing the saddle, front wheels etc will make their getaway that much slower and force them to abandon the idea.

I have somehow convinced them that I will park my bike inside in the ground floor from monday to friday from 10PM to 6AM! And weekends either I'll leave it in my office parking area or I will take it all the way to my room only. Tried it yesterday..It's not too difficult anyways :)

Hi Soumya
Sorry for the loss. If yours is a society with private security service, then you can penalize them for their negligence. My room-mate lost his ACT110 from our basement and he was reimbursed 8k for the same. Although you need to proactively pursue this with them and the society association.
