The best bang for the buck is actually a schecter 7 string but since you asked for a bike, checkout alite 300/350 at wheelsports and increase your budget by just a little more. You can also look at Merida 20MD /equivalent. Don't waste your money on a hybrid.

Why not a hybrid?? If he only wants to commute in city?? pls educate me on this... Of course i will be really happy if he buys a roadbike rather than a hybrid. But again why not a Hybrid

Has been discussed n number of times on the forum! :)

Simple things like -

1. You get higher value for money with a equivalent MTB
2. The shox of a hybrid if present are not as good. You are better of with rigid fork in which case u might as well go for a road bike
3. I have used a hybrid for 2.5 years and I think it is not suitable for a lot of things that MTB is
4. MTB with slicks work like a charm - I have tried that with a Merida Sub 20. I know Abhi has also put a drop down bar on his Trek 4300! :))

Go for a road bike if you can afford one. Buy a good MTB otherwise! :D

If hybrid I would take one that is suitable for touring - that way you can travel the whole country on it with panniers and such, probably do brevets. I liked Kona and one in Bergamont for the purpose! :)

my 2c,
dodo

Agree with everything except the Roadbike first theory.

Go for a good mountain bike if you can afford one. Road bikes are always a second choice ;) ! :D

And MTBs handle way better than hybrids in our crazy traffic.

Slicks are optional - model no constraint.

I ride close to 25 km a day commuting to office and back, and over weekends 100+ km in the city on usual errands (I dont do recreational rides often), on stock MTB tyres and i dont see a need for slicks or hybrids.

That call would come if you do more than 40-50 km every day and if the roads are good enough.

Not getting into brevets and other stuff, but for commute within the city, MTB with stock tyres are just about as good as any other type of bike.

I would be surprised if for a 25-30 km non-competitive ride everyday within city limits, amidst traffic, if anyone is worried unduly about performance or saving energy by changing tyres.

Anand.

Basically I went through the same thought processes not very long back - in June of 2012 and had no idea what the different bikes would offer - I had not even heard of hybrids :) I was such a newbie. All I knew were my Hero and Atlas cycles.

I went ahead with a MTB - it was like a natural choice for me once I rode the different bikes at BOTS, and havent changed anything in it till date, and I think it will suit anyone with similar requirements as mine.

Note: All the above, if you are looking for inputs on which type of bike to choose.

Sorry I did not mean roadbike first generally! :)) I don't have a road bike still and love my MTB totally! :D

My point was if you wish to go for a hybrid to be faster/efficient u might as well go for a road bike provided the road conditions are good! :)

Like someone said mentioned recently -

Hi Vishal,

In Decathlon, Original Grey 7 is very good ( with respect to sleek tyres ie inbetween MTB and Hybrid)... But it is unisex bike and
has shock absorber ...

Ashish, what is the ideal frame size for you?
If its 16" then there is a merida matts 20V up for 22k at wheel sports.
Or you can simply go for khs alite 150 (23k). Very decent configuration for the price I.e value for money..

For that price you get good MTBs - KHS 150 for instance.

Its definitely not VFM. And for that price its better to avoid rear suspension.

Vivek

Apart from Alite models, there is also the Scott Aspect 670 which falls in your budget..approx 25k..dual discs, 100mm suspension etc..

Yes. I agree. KHS 150/300 is the Best option for the budget quoted.
