The first BRM of the season -- the Huliyurdurga 200K -- is happening today!

We also finally have rain during our brevets!

28 hardy riders have set out to tame the 200K rolling course. As of
now, all except one have crossed the first control.

Two riders have had to drop out, one due to a mech issue, other no idea yet.

Most riders should've passed Huliyurdurga by now and should be heading
towards Maddur, which is the second (unmanned) control.

:(

28 people turned up, 57 had registered. Now I have to deal with a lot
of wastage (of cuesheets, maps, brevet cards).

I had only a few people telling me before hand that they were dropping
out -- thank you!

But this rant for another day :)

Sorry Sri,

I started at 6:30 AM and I could pedal for 140kms ( at :15:45) and the time to ratio distance thereafter weighed down my decision to call it off. The wind was totally against us and all I could muster was 14kms/hr  as against the required 20kms/hr. Though I could have made it to the 3rd control point with strenuous effort ( though doubtful at that moment) , I was sure I will not make it to the end.  And not to forget my terrible back pain. ...   :(...  This was my first long ride, but it was eventful for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it...May be, I will be back after a little more practice...  :)

While I didn't ride the brevet, I did ride the populaire and was in awe of how the whole thing was organized in a simple and perfect way. I was  in a pretty bad shape and wouldn't have had the rush to complete the ride if it wasn't for the beautiful route. Whether it was the instructions, cue sheet (with picasa links!) or accurate description of road conditions, the iisc team never ceased to amaze me with the attention to detail. Big hi fi to the organizers and volunteers who have brought us this awesome brevet season with super scenic and challenging routes!

Thanks a lot to the organizers!
And congratulations to all participants!

This was my 1st brevet and 3rd 200k ride on my ACT110+. I had ridden this route in Feb 2011; that time we had taken maddur-bangalore NICE road while returning.

As Abhujith has mentioned in his ride report,i started with Abhijith and Dheeraj at around 6.15AM. It was raining and I was actually enjoying riding in rain. I could climb the pipeline road uphill comfortably for the first time. After hitting Magadi Road I started to speed up. Abhishek and Dheeraj were little behind me. I thought I will wait for them at some eatary. It was some 12km to Magadi, I saw Mustafa having Idlis and even I stopped there to have my breakfast. I think I did a good thing by stopping there rather searching for food junction in the middle of Magadi with lot of traffic. While having idlis I saw Abhijith and Dheeraj pass by. Abhijith told he will wait for me at Magadi. I reached the first control point at 8.33AM. I dint stop there for long and carried on. I was riding very slowly in the town; looking for Abhi and Dheeraj. But I could not find them and I thought they must have finished their breakfast and carried on. From Magadi to Huliyurdurga route I met Jose and we were riding together. It was very beautiful route to ride and I was really enjoying a lot. The route was more scenic than it was in Feb. I and Jose reached Huliyurdurga at around 10:15AM. Jose wanted to have his breakfast and we stopped there. After a while his friend also arrived and I carried on along with Karthik after having a cup of tea and biscuits. Even then I was thinking that Abhi and Dheeraj were ahead of me. I found the 13km part just awesome which was mentioned as poor road in the cue-sheet. I was being tempted to stop and take a lot of photos. At some point I could not resist and stopped. I and Karthik took some photos and carried on . I was aiming to reach Maddur at least by 12:15PM. After that 13km stretch, Karthik was riding bit slowly, I stopped for him for 5 minutes but he was not in scene. I though he must have having rest ; because there were was no chances for any mech failure as his bike was brand new. I carried on. I reached 2nd control point at Maddur by 12:35PM and had my lunch at Maddur Tiffanys. I left Maddur at 12:55PM alone. Riding from Maddur to Ramanagara highway was not at all fun. This 30km was really a bad and boring road for me. There was pretty strong headwind and I had to ride against it alone. I stopped at Channapattana for coconut water. I reached Ramanagara at around 2:35PM.

Everything was fine till the time I realized that my rear tyre is punctured! It happened around 10km before Machanbele. This was the first time I had a flat 'during the ride'.  I stopped to change the tube as I had 2 spare tubes. I changed the tube and filled air. After putting the wheel back in position, I tried to put the break pads back. But one of the break pads got stuck hard to the wheel. I tried to fix it but could not, at that moment. It was already some 20-25 minutes and 6-7 riders passed by me. Only way I found to avoid wasting more time was removing the break pads! I knew it was very risky, but I could not think of anything else. I decided to ride without the rear brakes.

On the way to Manchanbele I stopped and took some pics from my phone. There were few kids playing on the road, spent some time with them and took their snaps also. They were happy to see their photos. :)

Manchanbele uphill was waiting for me. Again Karthik was with me while climbing the uphill. We reached 3rd control point at Chandrappa circle at 5PM. I had some cool drinks and bananas. And we started to ride towards Magadi road. I did not face any problem riding without rear brakes.
At around 6PM it again started to rain. It was getting dark and traffic was increasing near Tavarekere.

It was some 3km before ORR I realized that the front tyre is losing air. One more flat. I decided to stop at ORR. But due to huge traffic I could reach ORR only by 7PM. Now I have to do 10km more and in just 30 minutes. It will take at least 10 minutes to change the tube. That means I had to ride at 30kph inside the city including Mahalakshmipuram uphill and chord road traffic. That fact worried me and I decided not to fix the puncture. I stopped on ORR and filled air into the punctured tyre!  I found I could ride only about 1km and again I had to fill air. Filling air upto decent pressure (I dont have pressure gauge for my micropump) was taking around 2 minutes. So before completing  I had ridden only 3-4km out of that 10km with some air in the tube. I pushed my bike on M.Puram uphill. Yashwantpur fly over was fully packed with vehicles as expected. Somehow I reached the final control point just in time. They say 'In The End It Doesn't Even Matter', but I really felt guilty for exploiting my bike like that. Credits to my bike for making it possible for me to complete the ride in time.

Some photos I have taken:

Hi Sreepathi,

Given that you had 50% no-shows, looks like you had many just-in-case
registrations, since you didn't allow just-in-time ones, and there was
no penalty for dropouts. Put a charge on registrations perhaps next
time, or allow last-minute additions. Anyway - dont throw the papers
away - is there more there than the website has? If so I would love to
get a copy and cycle parts of the route - I don't have the endurance
to do the whole route yet, hoping to get there someday...

In any case, I think you guys have done a great job documenting these
rides - thanks for that!

Nalla,

I started late due to the rain. Didn't know the route to IISc and reached the start point even late. Thanks to the efficiency of IISc Randonneurs team I started 5 mins before the start point was to close down. Craig had left half an hour earlier so I had to ride alone.

After that it was an ITT sort of thing to reach 1st control before it closes. I have no clue how many uphills, downhills or rolling terrain did I pass because I had my eyes on the road and on the Garmin - speed / cadence / odo / hr data. It was raining but I didn't realize it until I saw my cue sheet was in tatters. I might have shivered in the cold wind but I don't remember if I did or didn't.

After cue sheet almost died on me it was the multiple calls to Sreepati Pai which saved me from getting lost on the route. Reached the first control with 10 mins to spare. Had tea with the boys at the control station and then they packed up as I was the last rider to reach. Then left for huliyurdurg with no cue sheet and only directions from the boys at control which I memorized. Kept riding with the hope to catch up with Craig or at least reach a control station with some time to spare. Rohan had given me two pieces of chocolate which lasted me 75km. Then I stopped for a bit and had tea, banana, biscuit again. Purushottam also stopped at that place for a bit. He had lost his cue sheet so I gave my tattered one to him. Now I had bad roads, no cue sheet and no Craig in sight. Sreepathi again came to the rescue and gave me directions over phone which helped. At 82km Craig finally called and I answered it. He said he was at 102km and I requested him to wait for me there. From that moment on my 2nd TT started. After catching up with Craig it was all about pacing with him and keeping an eye on the HR and Cadence. Speed was up but the Odo seemed to have slowed down cause it took ages to finish each km. We reached Maddur with some time to spare and then I washed the cuts in my foot - due to shoe rubbing against the mud in the skin. Didn't realise it was that bad until I saw the cut. Craig, Lochan, me and one other rider left Maddur at 1.30pm or so.

Then Craig and me rode till Ramnagar where I had to stop to get electral. I had no clue Machanbele climb was coming so I didn't have to mentally prepare for it. I had salts so I was better off and I was in a hurry to reach the control because I wanted to finish the ride early. We saw the climb and Craig attacked. I followed suit and we got past it quite quick. There was mud on my cleats which dried up and caked so when I approached the control I was not able to uncleat. Tried harder and it came off but sprained my ankle in the process too. Had a much deserved Gonad at the control station and then we started for the end point. After this our electronics died on us. Craig's Garmin, my Garmin, my headlight, tail light, wrist watch all of them died. Only pieces of electronics still working were Craig's front light and our respective mobile phones. The last climb at 202km almost threw me off the bike because the ankle hurt like crazy. Craig attacked it all the way up. I had to walk the last 50m or so when the ankle just gave up on me.

One final call to Sreepathi and we managed to find our way back to the end point with some time to spare.

Apparently there was the cold, scenery, rolling terrain, downhill, head wind, idli etc but I didn't notice any of those. I don't actually remember looking to the right or left except to watch out for traffic. It was all about road and Garmin and later Craig's wheel and Garmin for me.

So there...

Best,
Vasu.

Hats off to you Bharath! You completing the brevet despite 2 punctures
speaks volumes of your and your bike's determination.

3 cheers to the organisers too, for the scenic and challenging route.

Regards,

Praveen

Hi,

Wow....nice one.....the moment I saw the title of the topic, it was as if the count down timer has started.

Bike/Rider/clock.....awesome and very neat write up, I could feel the speed of a road bike in that write up.

Congrats once again for completion, beautiful photos!!!!
