Hi  all:

I am planning to cycle this route ten days from now and wanted some feedback on the elevation/gradients and general conditions of the road from someone who has done this route.

I will use my road bike with a 50/34 crank and a 11-34 cassette. I am wondering if the gear ratios are sufficient to do the agumbe climbs keeping in mind the hills of Agumbe.

I would appreciate any feedback from someone even if somebody has done only a part of this ride. More importantly is the ride from Thirthalli to Agumbe which I am assuming is full of climbs.

Thanks

I have done  from Shimoga to Agumbe via Theerthahalli. Should be easily doable with your gearing. Guess you will not be carrying too much.

There are no big climbs, at least I did not notice since I have super granny gearing specifically installed for big climbs or heavy loads (read: weak legs). After Agumbe, I guess its all downhill or more or less flat.

Try the Komoot app; very nice for plotting routes, & getting elevation profiles.  I plotted your basic route —

You can tweak it; intuitive UI.  You can also zoom in, & review the elevation profiles of various sections, in detail.

Btw... I have done the Agumbe climb couple of times... I think that is more fun. :)  You should plan to do the return route as well. :D

Thank you Praveen. I plan to have my bikepacking saddle bag and not much else. By the way, did you do the route on your MTB with a triple chainring or a road bike?

I tried the komoot site just now. It is an excellent site. Thanks for recommending.

Ya... it’s has gained lot of visibility in the past ~2yrs.  You can see it discussed on Reddit etc., plus various GPS devices like Wahoo, have integration with Komoot; so they are  solid setup.  Most features are free... only some geo-specific info is premium.  Have been considering going for premium; they had some offer a while back, which I missed.  They don’t have any India specific stuff in the premium version last I checked, but I was still considering the premium version, just to support them. :)

Re: gearing... in the direction you are going, your gearing should suffice I think.  No long climbs, as you can see from the elevation profile.  It will show you the colour coded gradients as well (something I was waiting for from Garmin Connect, for 6-7yrs); any small stretches with high gradients you should be able to manage with your gearing.  The 11-34 on your rear cassette, already seems to be an MTB gearing; just that you are missing the small ring on the front.

DB mentioned above all info.

To answer your question Shyam, I have a high quality steel roadbike which is just around 10kg (No aero, nothing). But I have installed a ridiculously low gearing.
Double chainrings: 38-26 or 24 and Cassette: 13-30 I think.  And I have climbed some really steep climbs, no problem with this gearing.

Actually it was very easy ride from Shimoga to Agumbe.

If you want to know Bike and ride report starting from Shimoga, it is here:
