No I was not riding the 300 KGF yesterday, I was just there at the end control point for couple of hours. When Hari told me to come over, I agreed as the end point was relatively closer to my home compare to the start point and next day being a sunday, no need to worry about the night sleep 😄. It turned out to be a good decision. My wife is not into riding but she is no less enthusiast about whole biking scenario, so she also joined me after a hectic week of work. We two reached the end control point by around 9.45 pm and learnt that Hari, Abhijit and Sohan are on the way and would reach in couple of minutes. So we were sitting in the car and watching a video when we saw two scorching lights are fast approaching to us and in no time realised that they are the first group to reach the end point - Alan and Amitabh, what amazing riders they are, finished 300 k in just 16 hours and still looked like they can go for another couple of 100s. Alan said he is little tired and would like to go, so I collected his cards and guided him the route as he wanted to go to MG road from silk board and caught up in a chat with Amitabh till Hari, Abhijit and Sohan arrived. After that there was a gap in time before we received Dipankar and Venkat there. By then Ciga also came as us with lots of tea and we were in conversations. Had a long chat with Sohan after quite sometime and time was just passing by and one by one infos were flowing about the rider's locations by phone and the countdown was on. 11.15 onwards we started receiving a group of riders at every 15 minutes or so and most of them came in a group of 2 or 3. Venkat was looking for an auto and then decided that he will wait for me till around 2 and I will drop him at MG road. By around 1, around 15+ riders finished with a smiling face including - Vijay with six flats on the way, Senthil, Shankar, Suleman from Coimbatore along with two others, Somaskanda, Ankush, Mrinal, Arvind and few more whom I'm not able to recollect the names. Manjula did really well and just fell short of finishing, but the effort was awesome. Sreekar, Khuram were doing well and came to the end control but in-between they had to catch up with a bus & tempo but very well attempt guys. Anil was there by around 1 and with all smiles - we were concerned about you man and hope you don't ride again without those safety gears. Me and Ciga were discussing that we can probably keep the end control in such a place where there is water, food and toilet. May be Empire hotel could be a probable place as they keep it open late in the night. If that is not possible then at least we must organise a jar of water with dispenser to drink and wash face & hands. We were approaching 2 am mark and getting into the wrapping up mode. Few of the riders were pretty close to the point and would have reached in another half an hour or so including Meera who was crossing Electronic city by that time - it might have just crossed the fence but well done guys and you were no way shorter than finishing the ride on time. Nagaraj and Venkat were sharing their experience of riding overseas and it was interesting. Enjoyed every moment there with all spirited minds and had to say good night to all as we had to go to MG road to drop Venkat, and Hebbal to drop Sreekar and Mrinal. Left the end control point of the season's last brevet at around 2.30 am with a hope that we all will meet soon and with a word of Sohan's in mind - 'if you be at the start or end points, you also feel like riding' 😄

thank you & regards

Suman,

That was an excellent recap of yesterday late night/today early morning's events at the End Control Point. You also managed to remember and recall almost all the riders names and their sequence of arrival too!
It is mighty helpful of you to have dropped off riders after 2 am @ M.G Road, Hebbal and then you drove back all the way to your residence @ Jigani... You must have driven by my estimate 70 to 75 kms and reached home by 4 am...
BBCh is flourishing because of such selfless volunteers ! May your tribe increase.

Best,
Siga

Dear Anil (Mysore Road) Kadsur,

Finally I saw you in person (I'm a keen reader of your correspondence). I was overawed. Here was a guy who rode the the 300 K Brevet (unofficially) literally with just the clothes he had on...and nothing else.
People were so crowding you in adulation  that I couldn't even give you my customary hand shake to the riders coming to the End Control Point. I just stood and wondered at your sheer boldness !
I might ruffle a lot of feathers, but I got to hand it to you, you were a cyclist who completed the ride. The rest were Brevet riders.
We'll sure meet the next time.
Best,
Siga

Well, thats a too generic statement to be made on internet forum!! Safety need not always be with gadgetry n equipments carried. Saying this after riding with the person n knowing he is aafe rider.
Esp after a straight forward apology mail "dont get inspired" ***could** be seen as nasty n not in good taste.

He once posted saying he finds fun in giving 'jerks' to heavy vehicles.

He had a PoP cast for about 3 months for an arm fracture, which was re-did with even fibre glass three times. My arm (which was literally in two parts) healed in just over a month.

There are plenty of very strong riders to take inspiration from.

And a helmet isn't a 'gadget' that's carried. It's an absolute necessity. And when riding in pitch darkness till 2AM, lights aren't 'fancy gadgets' too.

Rider with all aforemetioned equipment can still give lot of serious jerks to anyoe n everyone :P

Btw, before we get digressed totally into materialistic/fancy equipment details n  idealistic definitions about "safety n biking" my point stands simple - to gain Inspiration or not is a individual decision. atleast last thing anyone would like to discuss on a open forum or being told by some body to follow or not to follow :)

Happy riding. Cheers.

Hari, Inspiration in the sense of the pure energy Anil sir shows.
I will never go out on a long ride without puncture kit, electrolytes, and lights if i have to ride during the night :).

People say if something bad has to happen it will happen any way. I simply dont want to increase the probability of that happening.

Yes there are a lot of strong riders to get inspired from and Anil Sir is one of them :)

Ashok, whats confidence got to do with not wearing helmet in future,.... This is absolute insane what anil did, i infact called him and asked why did he do this, he said, he actually forgot to wear it... becos i know anil, and he is a responsible rider on highways... he has never missed wearing helmet... this is his first and last time on a highway i guess.

And pls dont take any inspiration from this... not worth it...even anil will not appreciate it..

Forgot helmet??? For a 300km+ ride? And the puncture kit and other stuff too? Mmm.... I believe it.

As I mentioned, I'll never get the confidence to do that. You can do it only when you feel at home at any part you are travelling, according to me.

I will always were helmet too, but still not very confident as to how much it can help on a serious crash. That stuff appears real flimsy, irrespective of whatever they claim.

Still he is an inspiration ;)

Ashok.

Igniting an age old debate. I guess your idea of a helmet is a strong unbreakable structure. Check out: http://www.bicycling.com/training-nutrition/injury-prevention/precious-protection

Nope. Like a car's shell, it should crush and absorb the energy is what I thought. This will crush, but how much of energy it can take is the question. May be I need to do some study about accidents involving cyclists. Don't  want to open a Pandora's box here if it is an age old discussion. :)

Concussions are one deadly thing. I had a friend who had a concussion on a bicycle ride and she didn't remember a thing. Not even where she was and what she was doing. It took her a day to recollect that she was actually on a bike ride. You don't need a huge impact for a concussion. Just one misplaced pothole is enough to ruin the day. And when a person like Anil rides all night, alone without helmet and lights, you can imagine the probability of finding the killer pothole or something else.

What an example....as I couldn't control laughing till now, that is why delay in replying.....lol

Top of the head is the only part that is sensitive, other part of the head is extremely tough to break....after all it was designed by God, that was much before helmet....

As you mentioned that is not the reason what makes helmet critical....only thing what no one sure is, when one falls, how/where he lands...
