Our friend Dr Ashwin Mahesh is contesting the elections. He is currently standing for the MLC ELECTIONS for the Graduate Constituency in BANGALORE. If you are not aware, MLC Elections for the graduate constituency is round the corner ie in JUNE 2012.

He has been a strong supporter of Bicycle Initiatives in the City of Bangalore  and more importantly NAMMA CYCLE INITIATIVE @ Indian Institute of science and has been the main driver in getting the Sponsors and Permission from various public and private players for the program.

He has been instrumental in pushing forward the bicycle projects with BBMP and also the parking space for bicycles.

I had an opportunity to interact with him closely - while we were working in the Non Motorized Transport Task Force.

This is why i support him :

1> He will be able to talk for the Cyclists/Pedestrians in the legislative assembly as he understands the need of Cyclists better.

We have proposed to the Industries Department , Karnataka Government for  pushing forward for creation of a separate BICYCLE Technology park for Bicycle Manufacturing - but we need some one in the assembly to push forward the agenda.

Our vision is that we need all kinds of Bicycles like Pedicabs, Cargo Bikes, Mother Bikes everything made in our state - so that our state becomes the world leader in manufacturing of bicycles and green transport.

2> Apart from this he is a Social Entrepreneur and was the man behind "BIG 10 BUSES " and the "Traffic Signal Control Information System - BTIS ". He is also responsible for building a portal India Together National development magazine.

3> He is very Creative and has taken many initiatives in Bangalore. I think our city, state and nation needs leaders who can be creative and also be aware of the system and the ways to overcome the issues in a creative way. He has been an adviser for government on many bodies. Therefore it is a good thing to have a leader who understand the structure of the system and knows how to work with the system.

4> He is highly educated with a Doctorate in "Climate Science" from the  University of Washington. He is on the faculty list of IIM, Bangalore, IISC - Bangalore, IIIT -Bangalore. He worked in NASA, USA as a senior climate scientist.  He will be able to talk about the Climate and the Environment in the assembly and get some real action from the government. More importantly he does not have the weakness most of the educated people have - that is to simply debate with no action..

5> What makes him really special is that he is a extremely good compassionate human being.

6> He has not allowed the tragedy of Polio and the consequent paralysis to undermine the spirit of his life. He has triumphed over the hard things of life and always been a role model for others.

He has been listed in the The Smart List 2012: 50 people who will change the world  by the global magazine - pls click here-  wired .

7> He gave up a lucrative career as a scientist in NASA and returned to India and has been working on many aspects that severely affect the life in our country.

This is what he writes in the article "The promise of a different life " (Please read this article)

"The rays of hope for the stricken in our society hinge on the willingness of a few to stand themselves up to be examples in their name. The few who make it out of their binds have the obligation to speak for those who do not, and to make things easier for them. For debilitation and suffering are not badges one wears on a sleeve, so that the crumbs of pity that flow from them can make lives better. Instead, the subtracted state of our sick, homeless, poor and malnourished is a reality of their lives, one they bear with the kind of gumption and fortitude that you and I cannot even begin to imagine.

I'm handicapped, yes, but I've been enormously fortunate, and mercifully not too much the worse for it. Too many others are held back in countless ways, not just by illness but by lack of opportunity, landlordism, enforced prostitution, social ostracism, and worse.

The real challenge of our lives is to empower them, so they can walk all those paths they only dream of now. Without that promise of a different life, hope is just a four-letter word."

Now i need not say why i support him and hope this mail and the above writing makes it amply clear that my request to vote for Dr Ashwin Mahesh is not a typical political request but a genuine request to enable a gifted leader to represent us and see how we can live a life that is better and more joyful - together .

So i appeal to all my friends to vote for him in the election and also get your friends to vote for him in the election.

You can watch him air his views on YOU TUBE here and also here .

So if you think we need to support him , this is what you have to do :

1> Register for the Election and get enrolled so that you are eligible to vote - Last Day 30th April.

2> Make Sure your name is in the electoral list

3> Vote during the election.

Thanks again for reading this lengthy mail - do share it with your friends as well.

This Election has given me an opportunity to make a informed decision in supporting a good candidate. It has also taught me that we have to do a serious study about the candidates before electing them and make sure the people who make the decisions on behalf of us are capable and intelligent and really care for all of us.

Regards,

Murali,

Vijay Kumar
