Hi Guys,

Is it ok to ride a cheap cycle to nandi hills or should I get one of
those costly road/mountain bikes? I have been using my cycle for last
2 years and it works perfect for 2 to 4 km rides in the city.

Regards
Deepan

Deepan, don't think cheap/costly, instead think features. Are you riding a single-gear or multi-gear bike? How well do you keep it maintained? And most importantly, what's the longest you have done before?

Hi Yogesh,

The longest I have ever done is 10km. It is a single gear bike. I will
try 30km rides before I decide about nandi hill ride.

Thanks

Hi Deepan,

I have Hero Hawk (15 Gears) and the maximum I have pedaled is 80 KM in
one go. I am not sure what distance is Nandi Hill but I fear to go on
long rides for following reason:-
1. Road Bike is suitable only for Road.
2. The fear of Puncture
3. Journey to Nandi Hill is a lonely place (my guess) and if I get
stuck it will be difficult to come back

But all my above fears are just fears. It is worth to give it a shot.
But yes, cycle with gears will surely be helpful.

Hope it helps.

Regards
Amit

Quick reality check. I don't know if you guys have met Pooviah before. He is a pretty strong guy. I have seen him bicycle twice so far - once to muthathi and once more in our Jan BBCh time-trial. He makes it look like he is on steroids. So, any aspiring long distance riders reading this thread should work on building up their stamina and core-strength along with building up their confidence :-) Good luck!

Hi all,

I've been riding a "cheap" single speed Hercules, alone, from
Jayanagar upto Nandi Base and back for the last six months. I've had
absolutely no problems.

I tried Nandi Hill this saturday in a BSA SLR. It is a single speed bike. I could do Nandi pretty comfortably. Also there were few first-timers in their single speed bikes with me. Even they made it to the top. So, now none of you should have any excuse for not riding up the Nandi Hill.

Having said all that, i feel i must add:

1. If it is a first ride, it would be better to go in a group. Preferably with one person who has done these rides before. Or have a friend on a car/ bike along. If you get a flat tire or a broken chain or something like that, you wouldn't want to be totally stranded - Especially on your debut ride. Having said that, such breakdowns are EXTREMELY rare, and the road to Nandi is very good.

2. When riding, and to Nandi in particular, cally LOTS OF WATER. and Electral. And glucose. Its easy to start dehydrating quickly without realising it.

3. Do a thorough checkup of the bike before you start - wear on the brake shoes, tire condition, chain lube.

Abhijit K
