About RAC-F

The RideACycle Foundation (www.rideacycle.org) encourages cycling – as a form of recreation, sport and as a means to commute to work. We lobby for the rights of cyclists and for laws that offer protection to cyclists through dedicated cycling lanes as well as through support for safety regulations. We strive and work with the government administration to bring about change aimed at encouraging cycling in our cities.

Amongst the activities we foundation undertake are several fun events like a cycle treasure hunt, off road rides for children, dirt track races, and bicycle maintenance workshops.

However, one of the first campaigns that the RideACycle Foundation have undertaken is to promote responsible and safe behaviour cycling within the cycling community.

Please visit the official TFN 2016 website  http://tourofnilgiris.com/registration/  to register.

I have rode the TFN in 2013. Thought of riding this year and opened the registration site but out of my budget this year.
63% increase in the Cost of the tour from 27500 to 45000 just in 3 years?

Even self-supported/limited-support events have a lot of leg-work and other expenses involved. Just yesterday, I rode in an event called T åkern Runt (http://www.takernrunt.se/).  The organizers had marked turns with sign boards and some sections had volunteers. There was a car for medi-evac or breakdown assistance. All starters registered with phone numbers and were assigned bib numbers. The bib numbers were collected back at the end of the ride, to ensure that the riders got back. Those who hadn't got back by closing time would be contacted and a search party sent out, if needed, I was told, when I asked about them collecting the bib numbers back.  There were also two refreshment stations along the course, with electrolytes, water and salted gherkins, I think. There were some cookies, sausages and coffee at the finish line, for finishers.  This is pretty much the minimum infrastructure I've seen, in anything that's more than a randonneuring ride, and I can imagine that it took quite some effort to set things up. I guess the complexity goes up exponentially for a multi-day event and with more frills thrown in, it becomes hard to keep expenses down, I guess. The whats-included section for TFN seems pretty comprehensive! Seems like apart from the actual biking, the riders don't need to think about logistics at all! Surely that's worth a lot!

The question was pretty simple for me. 60% increase in fees. Other than inflation, is there a proportionate improvement in other aspects. I haven't tried it yet, though.

To make an apples-to-apples comparison, it's important to know whether all facilities available now were being offered three years back. If they weren't, what's the difference. Events like these generally evolve from one year to the next, with lessons learned from the past leading to changes.  I ride a local event that's been organized continuously for 51 years now, and they've now evolved to the point where there's barely any change from one year to the next, and the fees don't change much either.

The change apart from the route i see is on the cost side. There were no such options 3 years back if i am right.
I assume, these options are provided for the benefit of foreign riders.

No doubt on the organizing front. One of the Bests!
But reasonable increase in the cost of the tour proportional with the increase in expenses, will make a lot of difference.

The Cost of the tour would be

Rs.45000 for Triple Sharing
Rs.60000 for Double Sharing
Rs.85000 for Single Sharing

Karthik, no point complaining. Demand and supply, basic rules ;)

There is no dearth of rides around Bangalore for all budgets. One can always choose what is appropriate for himself/herself.

We should seriously think of 'opensourcing' ride/course layouts, for people who wish to do it at their own convenience and cost. For instance, there can be Strava routes/segments of TFN stages that anybody can take a shot at, anytime they wish, albeit unofficially.  In case of brevets (BRMs and non-ACP brevets), this info in already available through cuesheets and GPS courses.  People can use them for training or to attempt it at their convenience.

There may already be these Strava segments/courses or GPS courses available elsewhere, but very likely scattered and hard to find. Maybe we should think of a common pool where we could contribute courses/maps/cuesheets etc, for people to be able to easily find them.  Any suggestions? Github?

We can perhaps create a tab in BBCH webpage and store everything there. It would require good amount of work by the team but over time it would be worth the effort.

thank you & regards

I'm more in favor of a more public facing tool, like github, as it's easier to add a few people as custodians of a public repository, than to give them access to a private website! The task can also be handed over to multiple people instead of it falling on one person.

If you are asking about the route - yes, it is easily available. Hotels can be booked online. A tempo traveler shared by 6 riders will be dirt cheap. Of course, you don't get the atmosphere and hype of the TFN. You don't get to race with the best in the competitive section.

Think of it... people pay to run. Sounds crazy right? Run shouldn't cost anything according to me. But then, most people do need the right atmosphere to get the motivation to do it. Sometimes, that atmosphere is crowd sourced and free/cheap. Else, it is to be paid.

I think TFN routes are published?  May_not be as GPS tracks / cuesheets, but as map images.  So one should be able to plot those on GPS.  I think the TFN hotel info is also included in the ride info?  So one can look to stay at the same hotels, if riding independently.  I know of one chap who (few years back), picked some sections of an earlier TFN, and rode them.  He did_not stay in any hotels though; he stayed in villages along the way.
