Hi all,

I was thinking of getting a Aero bar ( rest bar ) for my MTB (  Trek 3700 ). Any suggestion ? Would it help on long rides ?
I had talked about this with bharani and he had suggested some shops. Bharani has one on his MTB ( Ritchey prologue make imported 4k )

RR Madiwala : Called them - No stock but atleast said i can get it fitted from some other brand cycle.
WheelSportz : Called them - No stock
Decathlon     : Called them - No stock

Any other shops ?

Sachin at Pedals and Wheels, Malleswaram had a aero-bar for sale. You could check with him but even those were Ritchey Pro and upwards of 4k I think.

Glad you found them but I hope you realize that aero-bars are not really rest bars as you mentioned. They help you achieve a aerodynamic posture for racing. I don’t think they are very comfortable for long rides or touring but then I haven’t used any so I may be wrong.

Have you already switched to slim, slick tyres? That would offer more
bang for your buck.

Thanks Bhaskar and Dr.Deepak

Rather than the aerodynamic posture for racing , for me its about changing my hands position frequently.
No i dont want to change to slim and slick tyres as i personally there is less chance of flats with the MTB tyres.
Better to have a separate road bike itself for racing.

Aerobars then may not be the right solution. Think of bar ends, drop
bars or trekking bars. I think the trekking bars might be a decent
solution, as you can even keep your shifters and brake levers [not
sure though].

+1 to wat Dr D said.

U'll have to be a mad speed demon like Bharani to gain any advantage of an aerobar on an MTB. And it is definitely not a rest bar. Also remember that handling will be trickier on the aerobars

Thanks Doc . That link had usefull info and yes pics too. I have decided NOT to change anything as there are 3 concerns

1) Existing Brake Levers becomes useless since trek3700 also has V brakes
2) Existing  Integrated shifters becomes useless ( as trek 3700 also has the 25.4m clamp )
3) Inspite of making the above items useless and spending 5k on new items, there is no guarantee that it might be comfortable.

He is 5.7 and uses 18 inch frame. Same case here. Moreover i have to pay them to get it done unlike maneeshk7 :-)
Its better to leave the original beauty as it is and get a road bike for the other purpose. You opened my eyes :-)

rk

I am using the "Ergo Control II Bar Ends" from Cane Creek for my MTB.

http://www.canecreek.com/component-other?product=ergo-control

Costlier ones - but good for long rides and climbing sessions. Really
comfy on hands. Good investment, if you do long rides on MTB.

Cons: Costlier / Adds more weight - (~300gms - i guess)

Buts its worth, if you are a serious mountain bike user :)

Cheers!
