Hello,

I am currently visiting US and I was checking out some bikes. Trek 4500D 2013 model is on sale at $400(INR 25000), I checked the same model (maybe 2014 model) in BOTS website which is around INR 54,000+ . The price difference is 30K. I am fine with 2013 model however I would like to know,

Do I have to pay any tax or import duty and how much at airport while bringing back to India? When I was leaving India I had a chat with a custom officer (I din't ask specifically about cycle), he mentioned that any item value crossing over 35k will attract import duty. Now I was kinda in hurry so I couldn't clarify my doubts. How would they valuation works? Will they go by the receipt which would be $400* and multiplied by INR 62 (=25K) or they will compare the cost of same bike which is sold by stores in India (54K). If anyone having experience or idea please share your views/ opinions.

I would have talk with Qatar Airways if there is any extra baggage fare on bikes (oversize luggage), if yes how much it would be.

Happy Biking,

Thanks,
SM

Dont know about Qatar but United Airlines/Lufthansa has a $200 fee which I had called and verified a few months ago.
In general this would make sense for higher end bikes as the transport fee+plus any customs becomes a smaller portion of overall cost.

Looks like Qatar Airways does allow carrying bicycles at no extra charge. They do insist on special packing and it has to be within size and weight restrictions.

I will always email them with your ticket details and get a confirmation email, a printout of which should be carried.

Usual advice on checking in early, giving them notice that you are carrying bicycle etc applies.

Thanks Joe for you time and posting the link. Yeah looks like they allows bicycles however as you suggested I will definitely get in touch and get email confirmation.

Can someone shade some light on how much I need to cough up on import duty or any other kind of tax? And how would the valuation done (please see my first post)?

Happy Biking,

Thanks,
SM

Ride the bike and throw some dust on it and say that it is a used bike and tell some arbitrary low price as that of a used bike.

If your total value is under 35000 INR they should not charge you. Tell the price you paid if this is the case. The customs might ask you to run the box through scanner or open for inspection. I brought in a bike frame and components last month and they asked me to run through the scanner after they found that I am not carrying any tablets or any other electronic stuff other than my office laptop and they let me go within 2-3 minutes.

Thanks Ramkumar for your reply. This sounds good So what you purchased (as you said bike frame) was below 35k and thus you din't have to pay import duty? So they obeyed the receipt what you got in US?

Do I really have to make the bike feel like used although the cost is below 35k?

Thanks,
SM
