Hello all,
I'm planning to purchase a new bicycle. I stay near Mahadevapura. So
any outlets that you suggest for bicycles near mahadevapura,
Kaggadaspura, BEML , K R puram, Marathalli would be helpful. My budget
is around 7K . What are the other accesories that should be bought
along with a cycle ? I'm planning to use it for commuting to office
which is 5 KM each way. On weekends i would like to ride around 20 KM
each way.

Ryders ACT110 http://www.bsahercules.com/product-features.asp?pid=200

I like this one for 10.5K but have reservations whether i'll be a
regular rider. I don't want to go beyond 10K in either case.

Any recommendations around the 7-7.5 K or exceptional ones
at 10K. ?

Regards,
Navin

Other bikes in the price range : The fomas new hybrid(?) http://www.fomascycle.com/FB-7004.asp

Accessories I would buy : Helmet, lights, bell, reflective jacket, gloves - in that exact order :D

Good luck getting after sales service from the FOMAS dealer in Bangalore.

Is it that bad? I read quite a bit about fomas roadking deluxe in BZ. Almost bought it at one point. Nonetheless, I'd worry more about warranty and spares than after sales service. After sales service can always be taken care of by our favorite 3 bike shops in bangalore (if they are willing to work on that bike) :D. Its the spares and warranty that might be a problem if a dealer is irresponsible. Also, needless to say, apart from the saddle will fall down worries, hercules 110 is a good choice and i'm assuming there are enough people on this forum who are riding the hell out of that bike.

Navin, have you considered used bikes?

Shankar

I meant warranty and spares. Sorry for the confusion.

Yes. My fork in the Fomas Road King (not Deluxe) had a brake hole
drilled wrongly, and while the company finally accepted it was a
manufacturing defect, I haven't seen it since I handed it over to the
dealer. I've /almost/ given up on it. Dealer tried to con me into
buying a new fork, saying he would refund me the money when the
replacement came from the company (less 100!). Yeah right.

Two of two Fomas Road King Deluxes on campus have had their
chainwheels come loose. I've never seen that happen on any bike. First
one got fixed with a hammer -- was not replaced since was not covered
in "frame and fork" guarantee, at dealers discretion!

Nevertheless they have a new model this year. "With cartridge BB." *Sigh*.

+1, if you can check for wear well. See frame for damage. Rims,
chains, chainwheel, crankset for damage and wear. Tires, Brake cables,
Brake pads, etc. are standard consumables.

The after sales service and the problems that Sreepathi mentioned are very true... however, I would like to mention that Fomas people shipped replacement shifters free of cost when i emailed them saying that the original one broke.. No Bills asked, No other details. I think the problem is with the dealer in Bangalore - Prakash Shah (Bicycle Shoppee, Rajajinagar). The attitude of conning for business is very apparent and irritating. But the experience might be better with a different dealer. As for the Bike, it is definitely a choice if you are looking to upgrade to a real road bike in the future. You might want to change the crank in 6 months as the stock crank-chain wheel attachment is an example of very bad design.

Hi,

Thanks all for the replies.

> Navin, have you considered used bikes?
I'm not considering a used one since i don't how to check for the
damages or wear and tear.

I've dropped the idea of ACT after hearing the seat falling off
review from you guys.

Schwinn is way beyond budget for me.

Any dealers who would offer to give me a test ride ?
Marathalli is nearby to my place..

After so many helpful suggestions , i raised my budget and am planning
to go for a schwinn or a Giant Upland. I have to go to the store and
check them out and decide about them next week.

How are the helmets like ? i'm thinking of the merida type. How much
do they cost ?
