Dear Bikers,

My friend & I are planning to ride from Bangalore to Goa and this is the route we have chosen:

Bangalore > Hassan > Sakleshpur > Mangalore > Udupi/Honnavar > Ankola > Panaji > Mapusa

The ride distance is about 750 KMs and we plan to do this ride over 5 to 6 days (i.e. from 18-Dec to 22-Dec / 23-Dec).

If any of you have taken this route by your bike, please can you let me know your ride experiences as in - road conditions, things to watch out for, up-hills/down-hills, your recommendation on places to stay, or any other tips & advice to bike on this route.

Also, between Hassan and Mangalore, there is about 70+ KM of Western Ghat section & we were wondering if its safe to ride on bikes in such intense Ghat section.

Looking forward to your replies & your advice is very much appreciated.

Thanks & Have a Nice Day!

Best Regards,
Raghu

Shiradi ghat is not usable, don't even try. I tried and later caught a bus as the ghats were not doable.

On the way back, I tried Sampaje via Madikeri. The ghats are awesome, but the roads from Mani to the base of the ghats is horrible and let's you do 10kmph for 50 kms.

I have HEARD that the ghats via Koppa are better but not sure.

You cal also try via jog falls if you don't mind a totally different route. . Akshay has tried that route and you can ask him.

@Dharmesh - wow it was an amazing read! Very impressive of your ride (and that too - alone). So you took the route similar to the one Akshay...

@Shreya - thanks for your suggestion. We'll keep this in mind and if needed, we will take a hike in the Bus or Truck to overcome the bad ghat section roads

@Ravi - thanks for the note. We are eager to ride past Sakleshpur as I have heard that place is a wonder during monsoon.

dear Raghu,

Bangalore to Mangalore via Hassan and Sakleshpur is NH and that stretch of ghat sections the worst of them all. obviously not recommended for cyclists, unless you wantto breath the exhaust fumes of all the trucks and tankers and buses with crazy overtaking .
why ride ntional highway when you can do so many beautiful Malnad routes to the coast, try Belur via kudremukh or chikmaglur via Sringeri -Agumbe, or any other route more north, you will find the most pristine Malnad forest roads and ghat sections compared to Sakleshpur which i would never recommend on bicycle ever!
regards, Georg

me and my 14 yr old son did this b'lore to m'lore via hasan sakaleshpura on May 28 ~ 30 2012

roads were great but in a few streches widening was going on

there was no problem on ghat section

but as the ghat ends like uppinangadi onwards traffic is a problem

Agree with Georg. Can also ride Bangalore - Shimoga - sagar - Jog falls - Mavingundi - Honnavar - Goa

Suggest avoid Sakleshpur. Nothing worthwhile seeing on the highway and ghats are a nightmare with extremely heavy traffic.

Ravi, roads were terrible about 40 days ago

The ghats start from shimoga to sagara it self its not a " straight road " as the locals will say it :) it took us close to 6 hrs to do 72 kms

Sorry for my delayed response and Thank you George, Ravi, Shreyas and Abhi for your suggestions & input.

The thing is that my friend and I have already booked our accommodation in the route that I initially posted (i.e. booked accommodations in Hassan > Mangalore > Kundapura > Gokarna > Margoa > Mapusa).

We chose this route considering the altitude & more of rolling terrain, downhills and flat out roads. But yes, the traffic along the Hassan - Mangalore route is something we were not aware of. Thanks for your input and we will be extra careful as we don't want to risk our tires getting any frequent flats / rim getting bent due to bad roads.

Our journey each day is a bit long, averaging 180 KM the first two days until Mangalore and averaging 120 KM the remainder of the days. Do you have any pointers on the head-winds that we might experience considering its the coastal route. I ask this because in our recent ride from Chennai to Pondi, we struggled quite a bit due to heat and constant head-winds.

Regards,
Raghu

If you do not wish to cancel accommodation, avoid highway from Mlore to Kundapur,
