Subject: [BBC] Wipro Initiative for Cycling
Hi
Wipro declared a policy for promoting cycling. Below is the message
A commitment towards a greener planet and fitter Wiproites!
Proud to launch the “@ Wipro We Cycle” initiative that keeps you fit and
helps contribute towards a healthier planet. As a part of this initiative,
Wiproites can now purchase a bicycle under the *two wheeler loan scheme*.
And what makes it even better are the *great deals on bicycles that Wipro
Advantage offers*.
So go ahead and make a choice – “*Cycle to Work*”.
Nice as companies taking cycling seriously.

They only do it since they want to impress potential foreign clients.
They want to be able to tell a great story to promote their "green"
initiative to perspective clients who right now look at things like
corporate social responsibility.. blah, blah ,blah.

Sad to read the reply... I am no Wipro employee, but whatever be the reason, I have immense respect for companies that encourage cycling to work. What is wrong if there is a business interest behind it? Its better than giving cars for employee retention!
Wow you guys are loyal "sheeple"?
I appreciate having more bikes on the road... but dont kid your self
places like wipro, and infosys are all about the money and leverage.
They are seriously such a joke in the consulting world.

already shot the wipro piece to the concerned HR in my company
(Infosys)..
we already are in talks with the management here wrt commuting from
home to office..
currently in Infosys we have cycles (ladybird :D), around 200 in # i
think for commuting inside the campus itself.. and people use them
quite a bit..
but for commuting from home to office there is not much done here...
you can come , park your cycles in the cycle rack but no showers
outside the entrance (in the parking lot)..
(we have to enter inside the gates in formal attire)...
need to propose ideas to the management for making this feasible..
What do you suggest guys.. kindly help please..

I think it is a totally wrong statement.
I can vouch for Mr and Mrs Premji's personal concern for "green",
having had the privilege to interact with them during the last 12
years especially dealing with various aspects of "greenery" in their
campuses and in their residences. They are very concerned people
about the environment, water conservation and trees and especially Mr.
Premji hates cutting off any trees in any of his campuses.
To recollect a small story, once about 5 years ago, I had a meeting
in the morning with Mr. Premji in Whitefield at his upcoming
residence and he asked me where I was going after the meeting. I said,
Sir, I'll go wherever you want me to. He asked me whether I could drop
him at his Sarjapur Corporate office. I said no problem. So he sent
his car back to his (then) house in Kempapura and after the meeting,
sat beside me in my ordinary Maruti Van and I dropped him at his
office. His logic was very simple. Why should he use his car if he can
share mine. I was totally humbled by his down to earth approach
towards travelling sensibly in Bangalore.
And I also know that they don't use any fresh ground water for their
garden (which is itself a minimum water requiring one) in their
residence. They use the treated water from the STP in the Wipro
Sarjapur campus.
People like them don't preach loudly. They practice silently.

The former is based on measurable metrics set forth by the UN or involve certifications like Leed, etc. These are done by companies trading carbon offsets or are going to when it becomes big.
The latter, though, is basically just playing lip service to a concept to sound impressive or win, falsely, a competitive advantage by gimmicks like putting up a colorful web site with all the right catch phrases and some fuzzy data.
I guess at the end ouf the day I think it's great they gave away bikes or tax free or whatever. Even one more bike IS always a great thing.
But i think if they were really interested they would reduce their carbon footprint in a measurable, tangible way, by installing smart lights, thermally laminated windows or even just simply letting more people work from home.
But that would mean walking the talk and actually spending serious money.
