Hi
Wipro declared a policy for promoting cycling. Below is the message

A commitment towards a greener planet and fitter Wiproites!
Proud to launch the “@ Wipro We Cycle” initiative that keeps you fit and helps contribute towards a healthier planet. As a part of this initiative, Wiproites can now purchase a bicycle under the two wheeler loan scheme. And what makes it even better are the great deals on bicycles that Wipro Advantage offers.
So go ahead and make a choice – “Cycle to Work”.

Nice as companies taking cycling seriously.

Sad to read the reply... I am no Wipro employee, but whatever be the reason, I have immense respect for companies that encourage cycling to work. What is wrong if there is a business interest behind it? Its better than giving cars for employee retention!

Totally. And given that they've been enthu about having Mayank's RACF bike workshops multiple times at their campus, I don't think its that cynical a plot. Sure, i helps establish green credentials as well, but thats a good thing.

already shot the wipro piece to the concerned HR in my company
(Infosys)..
we already are in talks with the management here wrt commuting from
home to office..
currently in Infosys we have cycles (ladybird :D), around 200 in # i
think for commuting inside the campus itself.. and people use them
quite a bit..
but for commuting from home to office there is not much done here...
you can come , park your cycles in the cycle rack but no showers
outside the entrance (in the parking lot)..
(we have to enter inside the gates in formal attire)...
need to propose ideas to the management for making this feasible..

What do you suggest guys.. kindly help please..

Yes, last heard, they weren't registered as ngo. Every business is about making money...

But why ridicule a good initiative?

I got initiated into cycling again at one of the workshops at Wipro
back in June 2009. Though I don't work at Wipro any more, I do know
that the company does a lot on green initiatives. There was a scheme
to lease a Reva on very good terms. The Sarjapur headquarters campus
has alternate energy in use. For anything to be sustainable, it is
imperative to have an economic benefit attached to it. Only then it
can be adopted by the masses.

We are addressing all this in our "Wheels of Change" campaign.

Currently we are working with a couple of companies - Indigeo and Nokia Siemens for starters.

Will hand out more details on this soon - some of you have already expressed interest in this.
You could ask the concerned folks at Infy to get in touch with me and I could take this forward with them

Taken from Infy Eco Sustainability report,

"The main sources of emissions are secondary emissions from
electricity consumption, business travel and employee commutes "

So when they are acknowledging I am sure they will support the
scheme.

Probably make few cents as the emissions trading opens up, or credit
few rupees to employees account :-)

It seems to be a policy change rather a one off thing, they seem to
have made some effort and added this in policy. Because things like
interest free loans and adding this into the different perks
categories requires some effort I guess. For example, if you are
senior employee
you could buy a bike and claim the bill under some schemes.

+1 Sameer.

How do you conclude that Wipro is doing it for business reasons? Can
you substantiate? If foreign clients can be impressed by these
initiatives, and assuming these are done purely for that reason, whom
are you putting down... Wipro for initiating this, or the 'foreign'
clients who are so vulnerable? I dont understand your point!

(I guess I should get out of this thread, before Wipro's good
initiative is hijacked by some endless mail trail)

Hi all,

"They only do it since they want to impress potential foreign clients.
They want to be able to tell a great story to promote their "green"
initiative to perspective clients who right now look at things like
corporate social responsibility.. blah, blah ,blah."

I think it is a totally wrong statement.

I can vouch for Mr and Mrs Premji's personal concern for "green",
having had the privilege to interact with them during the last 12
years especially dealing with various aspects of "greenery" in their
campuses and in their residences. They are very concerned people
about the environment, water conservation and trees and especially Mr.
Premji hates cutting off any trees in any of his campuses.
To recollect a small story, once about 5 years ago, I had a meeting
in the morning with Mr. Premji in Whitefield at his upcoming
residence and he asked me where I was going after the meeting. I said,
Sir, I'll go wherever you want me to. He asked me whether I could drop
him at his Sarjapur Corporate office. I said no problem. So he sent
his car back to his (then) house in Kempapura and after the meeting,
sat beside me in my ordinary Maruti Van and I dropped him at his
office. His logic was very simple. Why should he use his car if he can
share mine. I was totally humbled by his down to earth approach
towards travelling sensibly in Bangalore.

And I also know that they don't use any fresh ground water for their
garden (which is itself a minimum water requiring one) in their
residence. They use the treated water from the STP in the Wipro
Sarjapur campus.

People like them don't preach loudly. They practice silently.

Hi all,

"They only do it since they want to impress potential foreign clients.
They want to be able to tell a great story to promote their "green"
initiative to perspective clients who right now look at things like
corporate social responsibility.. blah, blah ,blah."

I think it is a totally wrong statement.

Well when I was part of a consulting study created for the City of Chicago we summarized that corporate environmental efforts fall into 2 categories. Real and green wash.

The former is based on measurable metrics set forth by the UN or involve certifications like Leed, etc. These are done by companies trading carbon offsets or are going to when it becomes big.

The latter, though, is basically just playing lip service to a concept to sound impressive or win, falsely, a competitive advantage by gimmicks like putting up a colorful web site with all the right catch phrases and some fuzzy data.

I guess at the end ouf the day I think it's great they gave away bikes or tax free or whatever. Even one more bike IS always a great thing.

But i think if they were really interested they would reduce their carbon footprint in a measurable, tangible way, by installing smart lights, thermally laminated windows or even just simply letting more people work from home.

But that would mean walking the talk and actually spending serious money.

Sir, I'll go wherever you want me to. He asked me whether I could drop

office. His logic was very simple. Why should he use his car if he can
share mine. I was totally humbled by his down to earth approach
towards travelling sensibly in Bangalore.

Siga, isn't Kempapura further from Whitefield than Sarjapura road? Didn't his car burn more petrol in the process of going to Kempapura than going to Sarjapura road? Also, I am sure he would have had to go back to Kempapura at the end of the day, so his car must have come from Kempapura to Wipro HQ in Sarjapura road, picked him up and gone back again.

But then, we have to thank him for not using a helicopter. I am sure he could afford it with the money he has.

George,

I think Infosys, Wipro, in fact most people in Bangalore adopting green building techniques. Pretty much everyone uses skylight these days, they are also resorting to natural ways of keeping homes cooler (higher ceilings, granite flooring, etc).

Since green building techniques make economical sense, everyone is happy to adopt them in Bangalore these days.

Its definitely a good initiative from Wipro. Hoping that many other companies would be following this soon.

My organization SAP Labs India Pvt Ltd, has sponsored so far three for this year's TFN. One other guy was sponsored for MTB Himachal Race.
Additionally we did a Cycle Rally with about 40 people coinciding with tree planatation. This was also reported in DNA newspaper.
Apart from this most of the marathons (running) we take part is also sponsored.
With all this the interest among my colleagues in office is increasing and more people are now taking to cycling. From a group of 2 initially it became 6 and now we are about 15 - 20. In matter of 3 months. And the count is increasing.

Sathish, Not just this, but any initiative that puts more people on shared transport like bmtc, volvo buses, company bus, etc need to be appreciated. I in fact have great respect for any company that provides discounted bus passes for its employees. Infosys has been doing this for many years. That one initiative probably helped in reducing the number of cars and motorcycles on Hosur road.

Another long thread! :)

Whatever the motif I think it is a commendable job done. From a mere 17 riders when we had the workshop today they are touching nearly 100. Interestingly I saw a good participation from women as well. I am glad I was able to make it to the event - some snaps from the event -

Note to self - byke workshops will not be effective without persistent push from within the company. The work done by the team Yatheesh, Chitra and others who have been trying for the scheme despite the resistance and making it a reality. Hoping it gets more bums on the saddle! :))

Great going guyz!!!

It may be just an acknowledgment of the increasing biking commun ity in Bangalore. That may have more to do with the initiative than impressing potential clients.  Most of their customers are anyway biggies who look at their bottomllines and these things may not matter to them

Ah ok. So let me see.

Wipro PR/HR/strategist etc. guy goes "Let's give our employees a loan
to buy better bikes. Interest free. Then they'll go post it on some
internet group. Soon we'll see a meme. Then the entire world will know
we're environment friendly. Ha! We've fooled the suckers." His minions
clap with glee.

I mean seriously? There might be an intranet website. There might be a
page on their sustainability report (which Wipro publishes since '07).
But more importantly we'll see more people riding to work. There is
NOTHING as important as support from your employer as far as cycling
to work in Bangalore goes.

And isn't it tragically recursive that a study that calls out catch
phrases goes ahead and coins one of it's own? Green wash.

"Gee, Brain, what do you want to do tonight?"
"The same thing we do every night, Pinky - frame a farcical cycling
policy and try to take over the world!"

Hi Siga,
All Wiproites rever Mr. Premji for his simplicity. What you cited here could be a simple everyday example practicing deeds about what he preaches.

George,
Hope you would take time  read an account of our efforts to bring in the separate write up i have shared in the BBC group.
I think its time to brush aside your suspicion and join the cause of getting more bikers on road. If you could try and bring 5 more bikers (I mean regular commuters to office here) in a months time from now, you would appreciate the effort required & the need of a supporting hand to do this.
Wipro's leadership has played this "supporting hand" all along....

Mayank, Lavanya, Pradeep from RACF can tell you about the difference with & without Employer support;  for they have seen response in more companies while conducting so many Bike Workshops
