Interesting read, although not much of it is relevant here in India.
Also, good to know that things are so bad (yet) here.

The economics still applies to india. It is a zero-risk business, where the police laugh at the price of your bike and even refuse to write down the complaint. And even tease you for buying expensive bikes! So there is no risk of getting caught after the crime is committed. And as is mentioned in the article, it isnt feasible to put the police on bike thievery cases, when bigger concerns plague them. The only way out is to probably scare the guy off in the middle of the crime (like the siren lock someone had posted about)

p.s: Thankfully, i havent been a victim yet. But have read BBC threads and blogs of others who did face this issue.
