Reply-To: iiscbike...@googlegroups.com

I've been exploring opportunities to buy a new roadbike and was suggested to visit this store for a 'better deal'. The following is my experience there.

I reached this guy at 6:30pm. He was informed by the person, who suggested me to go there, that I'd be coming at 6:30pm. His conversation starter was, "Shall I bring the bike?"

He began by saying that Trek was the most awesome bike in the world (actually better than Bianchi too). He spent the first 20 minutes thinking I was going to buy the bike on the spot. When I told him I might buy by the weekend, his attention dwindled and began negotiating a deal for Trek 3500 on his phone.

A hilarious conversation was,

Me: what other brands do you stock?
He: I stock only the most reliable and trusted brands like Firefox, Trek, Hero, Hercules and BSA.
Me: You dont stock Giant, GT or Schwinn?
He: These are all refurbished models from China and complete crap
Me: Do you think Bianchi is better than Trek? (I obviously knew the answer)
He: Bianchi is just overpriced and a Trek is a Trek.

He then pulled out his calculator and typed 35750. He showed this to me, saying "this is the price I bought this Trek 1.2 last year". I thought till now that calculators are for calculating! This guy found an innovative way to use it! As a changeable price display!

He said he maintains the central warehouse for all Jayant bikes stores. But he claims to have just one piece left each of a 56cm Trek 1.2, 54cm Trek 1.1, 58cm Trek 1.2 and a 2011 58cm Trek 1.2! He spoke of the 2011 bike only after I thanked him for his time and got up to leave. Till then he maintained that all 2011 bikes were sold, the last one sold just yesterday! I never imagined warehouses to work like museums!!

He offered me the 2011 Trek 1.2 for 36k, provided I buy it tomorrow! Otherwise the price shoots up by tomo evening for me!! Also, in his words, as the dollar value increased, Trek bikes would be costlier by about 20% from august 1st. But all other brands would remain unchanged!!

When my interest in his 2011 Trek 1.2 was dwindling, he sat on his computer, showing someone Trek 4300D specs. I took this as a non verbal sign and left!

I felt I wasted 1 hour of my time today in his shop. Even Shome said he had a similar experience with him.

If that guy speaks only to people getting him 40k deals, how can someone trust him to respond to something like a broken fork etc., which would be covered by warranty?

This guy called me again at around 1PM today to try to negotiate a
better deal. He claimed to have spoken to the Company (I'm pretty sure
he hadn't spoken to Trek HQ, so I thought the Company was something
like the East India Company) and offered the 2011 Trek 1.2 for 35k,
apparently for a loss of Rs. 750 for himself. I said I wasn't
interested.

He then began negotiating for a Trek 1.1 56cm, which didn't exist till
now. He offered a price of about 30k for it. I said I'd rather buy
something else at some other place.

He then began offering the Firefox Roadpro as a low cost alternative
to Trek 1.1..!! I finally said I wanted to close the deal as I wasn't
satisfied with his response. He then began shouting at me, saying that
I wasted his time! He hardly spent 15 minutes out of the 1 hour I was
in his shop! If there was anyone who wasted his time, it should have
been me!!!

Well then this makes a definite case of some intrigue  :-)

I Did buy a trek 1.2  two weeks back... The guy told me that he had got bulk orders or so and as some stock of the model is left and so he is willing to sell at 39k.

I did get that bike ..took its first ride straight to ooty and on the third day to nandi...

Now there are some problems which I have figured out. The chain rubs against the large wheel ring when I am on the lower gear and the chain is on any of the last three small cogs . The mechanic told me on the first day itself that it its common for road bikes on cross gears..which i stupidly took s right...but now when i see scratches made by the chain on the inner side of the larger wheel ring i know something is not right, though intuitively...

I do have a mtb which didn't come up with this problem...and after googling and you tubing I did find out that there is something wrong about the setup...chain rub with the cage of the derailleur is still ok and can be taken care of by adjusting the limit screws blah blah but chain rubbing against the wheel ring???

Guys please let me know what you think abt this. I reside some place 700 km from Bangalore now ...feel stuck...but after getting some concrete feedback I will get in touch with the dealer....

I'll attach some pics for you all to make sense of what I wrote.

Hi Mayank,

I have the same issue on my road bike, but the LBS said its normal for road bikes to do that. I dunno if thats the dealers fault but I havent googled about it as the guy had me convinced. Except that mine works perfectly.
The pro roadies will know better.

About the pricing- I have had similar experience with Jayant.

Maybe a quick brush up on the 'rules'? ;-)

Rule #4
// It’s all about the bike.

It is, absolutely, without question, unequivocally, about the bike. Anyone who says otherwise is obviously atwatwaffle.

Its obviously due to some defect! I've seen plenty of road bikes, incl Trek1.2s which have no problems at all! I've seen them with SRAM and KMC chains.

My own Fomas had an SRAM as well as KMC chains. If roadbikes should get an issue, my Fomas would get it first :-)

As for Jayant- He claimed to give awesome after-sales service, which was supported by the person who suggested Jayant to me! Guess his mechs arent so good after all.

Hey Mayank,

Not sure if you got the answer to the chain rub problem on your biggest chainring - am sure it is not desirable, but I have noticed this on my Trek 1.5 too - and a load of other bikes. Kinda makes me believe that this is normal.

Dont think cross-chaining is the issue though.

ROhan i still have not found the answer to it. Still believe its the crank not put properly or some thing about it.

Have shooted a mail to trek people through their website. They say it takes a week or more for a reply.
still waiting.
Don't come to Bangalore often to take it to the right doc and i don't trust the local bike vendors who handles those steel built bikes roughly to take care of mine. So pretty much the same situation .

Hey doesnt it have to do with the barrel shaped adjustors on your gear cable? I had the same issue on my new Triban and it just needed some trimming of the front derailer's adjustor to set it right.

By the way, this is an adjustment for the derailer indexing. I had no clue about this till my Triban arrived, as my other roadbike had vintage friction shifters (which arent indexed)

I believe the barrel adjustors are for fine tuning or what you say indexing the gears after you have adjusted the upper and lower limits of the derailieur.
The rubbing here is not with the derailleur cage .its the chain rubbing the larger chain ring when the chain is on the smaller one.
But this starts to happen only when i drop the chain to the last three sprockets. Had it been chain ~ derailleur rub , i cud have thought about barrel adjustment and so on. But its the chain - chain ring issue.

I first thought that the chain width could be more so that it rubs ..but found it is a 9 speed shimano. Which leaves out this possibilIty.

now i could only imagine that the problem lies in the bb and crank setup .
Don't have expertise and tools to fix that currently esp on a new bike.

You can check the pics in this thread which i posted earlier. Did you find such scratch marks on the inner surface of the chain ring as it shows. To add to it i have only done some 500 odd km on it.

Hey,

Scratch on the big ring is unavoidable ... as it is design to shift the chain to the top in one rotation of the the crank.

in the situation of chain in small ring in the front and small cog at rear it makes noise humm..  then Please check the length of the chain is correct.

seems to be BB / crank alignment if the chain length is correct ... you need a pro eye to solve this ...

Thanks ravindar for sharing the video.
Though it is advisable to stay out of certain gear combinations but still I'll like my bike to be perfect .. damn I'm so obstinate  :-D you see its the chain ring problem.I'll get it fixed and get back to you all. Probably will have to travel to Bangalore once more top fix it up...

Thanks once again.

Both videos are mentioning only noise from chain hitting the FD.

@mayank: as everyone says, its anyway a bad combination of gears even if your bike were perfect. Keep out of it even if you get it fixed
