Hello everyone,
Before I start on Samim’s ride, I would like to congratulate Ramesh on
his 350 km ride which he did in about 23 hrs I think. Good going man,
a distance and achievement to be very proud of.

I write this mail from a very personal place in my heart, unlike other
ride reports, as yesterday’s mammoth achievement touched me very
deeply because of my great affection for both Samim, and the sport of
cycling.

I have only known Samim since just before the first TFN, we met at the
“group ride” workshop by him, organized by BOTS on NICE road. Since
then we have ridden quite a lot together and I have been following his
training and plans with interest and admiration. The RAAM story has
been in the air for a long time, but the stars have had to slowly
align to make things happen, and yesterday they seem to have
positioned themselves just right.

His qualifying requirement was 675 km in 24 hrs, but he decided to do
a nice round figure of 700 km within the same time. There are very few
people reading this who will understand what riding non-stop for 24
hrs means, and I am not one of them. Then when you actually think
about the distance itself, 700 km, that is another mind-boggling
thing. In fact it is so unbelievable, that many have always doubted
Samim’s achievements and plans, but I have seen him, and accompanied
him on a few of these crazy sessions, so to the skeptics I say “start
believing, and if you care about cycling in India, start supporting
and cheering this athlete who is making cycling history in this
country right now!”

A few of us joined Samim at the kick-off of his ride, there were a
folks from the BBC (Bangalore Bikers Club), his Bulldog team, family
and Wim and Kate Elfrink with their kids who have been very supporting
of his career since a while.
We took off at about 8:20 am, we were instructed by him and his
support team that we were not to ride alongside or in front of him,
but only behind. The incredible thing on that ride was the pace, it
was no joke keeping up, and I was wondering how one can hope to
complete that kind of a distance riding this hard! But clearly, there
are a few folks on the planet who can, quite demoralizing for the rest
of us, but I guess each to their own SPECIES!

We left Samim after the first loop of 70 km, and through the rest of
my day, breakfast, work, lunch, work, playing with the kids, visiting
in-laws, discussing the heat, dinner….this guy is still plowing away,
in 37 degrees celcius!

A bunch of us decided to catch him at the end of his 8th loop of 70 km
(560 km) at about 3 am, and ride through the rest of the night with
him till his finish at 8:20 am. He was definitely happy to see us all,
for a guy like him, the time, distance and pain are all durable, but
we were worried that boredom might kill him!!
We set off, and I was amazed at his state of mind, his ability to
converse and joke around in spite of being under very intense physical
strain. The pace was clearly a little less than when he started off
fresh, but it was still no joke at all, in fact every time he felt
good and recovered a little he would take off and hammer away at it
doing a good 40 to 45 kmh where the terrain permitted and then drop
back to 30, 35 and there abouts.

I stayed as close to him as allowed so he could feel a constant
presence and hoped that it would help him cover the remaining
distance, and I kept talking (whenever I got my breath back) as much
as possible as I was concerned about fatigue affecting his judgment
since the traffic on the highway kept increasing as the sun came up.
The amazing thing, is that his head was absolutely clear throughout,
he was totally focused through every pedal stroke.

He was in excruciating pain in his feet, and as one can imagine the
rest of his body was hurting too, but we kept joking about it. At some
point I said “there’s not much left now”, he turned back with a smile
and said “of me!?”.

At about 10 kms to the qualifying distance we were really focused on
the cyclocomp and the remaining time, it was a sort of count down,
everyone was tense and excited, us on the bikes and his amazing team
and family in the support car.
2 km….1.5 km……………..500 meters….I was looking at Samim watching his
meter, and I knew it when we hit 675 kms, because this incredible,
solidly built athlete just broke down, it was an overwhelming surge of
emotions under the most un imaginable physical strain. I could see
that these were not just tears of joy or pain, but the accumulated
effect of a lifetime’s hard work, suffering and perseverance, against
all odds.
We then stopped on the side of the road, it was hugs and tears all
around, I had the quivery lip and heavy eyes thing going on, but the
levee pretty much broke when I saw Zakir Bhai and Samim hug each other
crying. For those of you who don’t know Zakhir Bhai, he drives the
support car (24 hrs!!) and has been a friend of Samim’s for a very
long time, accompanying and supporting him on countless training
sessions of up to 600 odd kms at a time. He has seen and been a part
of all the effort, and I think is the one who understands this
achievement the best.

The qualifying distance was covered at 23 hrs with an hour to go at
about 7:20 am, so we had about 50 minutes to get back to the starting
point to complete his personal goal of 700 in 24. The remaining 25 kms
was amazing, supporters started showing up car after car, in the end
we were a convoy of a few bikers and numerous cars on the highway.
People leaning out of windows, standing through the sunroofs,
cheering, taking pictures and filming with their camcorders. There
were people waiting along the side of the high way, it was superb,
Samim kept saying “I cant believe this, this is the most amazing day
of my life”, I was also getting running commentary from him on the
spectators, “oh, that’s my student from…..oh, and that’s so and
so…….hey that’s my brother in law, wow, this is incredible…”

I was in awe at seeing the amount of support for this individual, and
the sport, and I was also an emotional wreck when we reached the
finish line because I thought this is a great day for Samim, but also
historical for Indian cycling. I was overwhelmed because myself and so
many of us have dreams, but here I witnessed one actually come true. I
salute you buddy, and your team, and your family.

I wish Samim and team the very best for the actual Race. It is a race
where just completion is massive. They will really have to work
together under impossible conditions, go and do your best, we are
already proud!

Affectionately
Vivek

Amazing account Vivek. Captures all the emotions, the difficulty, the awe....

Might be the official site(www.samriz.com) should put up ur report somewhere.

All the best to Samim for the race proper, and the other big things he's upto before then!..... And it is not just 700km he has covered in those 24 hrs.... The inspiration and role-model he has now become, will make so many more bikers cover so many more thousands of kilometres fueled by the thoughts of this ride

Nicely written Vivek.

Awesome achievement from Samim as well as Ramesh. Yes, I think you got
it right - cant even imagine what it would be like to ride like that
for that duration. Just amazing.

I hope and pray that Samim gets to achieve all that he wants in his
cycling career. He has certainly earned it and deserves it.

I was at CCD after the ride, and wanted to congratulate Samim, but he
was sort of surrounded by family and friends so felt a bit self
conscious. Anyway, I hope at least that he will eventually read the
congratulatory notes here.

Many many thanks for the report, Vivek ! As Sudhir says - your report can well be put up on the website. Heck there would be so many outside BBC who would be trying to figure out the details of this feat  - and none of the other media could talk about it as well as a cyclist !

Cheers again to Samim for the feat. More will follow soon I hope! The fact that he stopped for less than an hour - speechless...

Super report Vivek, thanks for sharing it with us. I'm sure just being
with him was an experience in itself. I was riding to Nandi on that
day with a few others, and was hoping that Samim would zoom past us at
some stage on the highway.

Good luck to Samim for RAAM. May his tribe grow.

Beautifully written Vivek.

Too often statistics are so mind-boggling that we can hardly appreciate the scale of such an achievement. Sort of like trying to comprehend the concept of inifinity.

Your report did a lovely job of really bringing home the sheer magnitude of the accomplishment.

Congratulations Samim and Team Bulldog!!! Awe-inspiring stuff.

May I also suggest you sign Vivek on as your PR consultant :)

Hat off to Ramesh, the guy looked the same when I saw him before and after his ride. Give it up for the guy who did 350k on an MTB. He looked in better shape than I did even though he had been cycling for 24 hours!
I think Vivek has said everything there has to be said really well. I would just like to add my experience.
We started riding with Samim at around 8.15 on Saturday. The idea was to do one loop, so Vivek and I finished our morning ride and then joined Samim. I thought doing 70k would be a breeze for me, but when Samim started riding, I was blown away!  I cramped so badly at the end of the first loop, I had to give up with about 7k to go. Now the average on that loop was around 35, pretty crazy, I mean really crazy stuff, especially when you're faced with the prospect of cycling another 630 kilometers. I went home half dead, and could not stop thinking about the guys who were riding in the blistering heat while I sat in the shade sipping on orange juice.
Anyway, Vivek called me and said he'd be doing the last two loops with Samim. It made me want to tag along too. So there we were, Vivek, Georg, Craig, Naveen and I, at 3am in the morning, when Samim rides in all smiles and joking, the handshake still super strong. I don't know how I finished the last two loops, I was just happy to be there. Vivek, Craig and Georg on the other hand, best support riders I have seen. Vivek stuck with Samim through 3 loops! Awesome effort, guys!
Now I could go on and on about the distances, times and speeds. The effort though, merits more than just numbers. Samim's favourite line has always been, "I train really hard. If you trained like I do, you could do all I do and much more!". Don't listen to him, he's just being very kind when he says that to you. I don't think I could even train as hard as he does. I don't think I could even think the way he does!
No disrespect to Samim, but he could not have done what he did without his team. What a bunch! Not only were they constantly monitoring him, they were looking after the rest of us too! I am really amazed at the level of dedication and support they offer Samim.
All the best to Samim and the bulldogs. I know you're going to kick ass when you go to America! Whatever the result, just being a part of such a great event is awe inspiring. Congratulations!

What an awesome achievement. Congratulations to Samim and his entire
support team.

And to think in the actual race, he will have to do it 10 days in a
row. That will be one for the ages.

I don't post here often, but this is certainly worthy of a reply.
Excellent report there, Vivek. I can never imagine the wild torrent of
emotions that Samim's achievement must have triggered - from himself,
his immediate support framework and the cycling community as a whole.

Good wishes to him. Hope he does India proud in the RAAM.

simply put.. SUPERMAN SAMIM..

Samim,
m kinda curious about something..
of all the stage races (tdf, giro, vuelta) and the innumerable classics, what is the inspiration behind choosing RAAM.. cos ur probably good enough to be on any of the other races..

This is not really accurate. Samim's main talent is extreme endurance, this is where he surpasses the rest. Cycling like running has many different areas where different people have specific talents. You will never see a marathon runner win or even compete in the 100 meter dash, and a sprinter win the marathon. They are completely different disiplines and require different skills and even physical constitutions, not to mention training diet and so on.
Cycling is the same, Mark Cavendish is the fastest sprinter alive, but he is not built and talented to climb a mountain like Pantani

RAAM is an extreme ultra event, it requires a totally different mental
and physical ability than a 1 day classic. For the most part it is an
individual race, which is completely different in every way from a
short distance team event.
So in short, not all cyclists are good at all types of races (speaking
of the top level of competition here) and they usually concentrate on
their specific area of talent and expertise.

Beautifully put Vivek. None of us needs to feel "inferior" or "inadequate" in any way, or compare ourselves to someone else and feel low. We each have our strengths!

I am, for example, the world's champion at getting home 10 kg of rice and 2 kg of dal (cleverly distributed between basket and rear carrier)  on my cycle instead of taking the car :)

Cheers, Deepa.

Lets not assume that guys like Lance or Basso or Contador are just one trick ponies who can be beaten like a rented mule in a different setting. The TdF and the other pro tours requires the winner to be equally versed at 2 disciplines of the ITT, TTT, climbing or sprinting.

Case in point: Lance destroyed the course record at a mountain bike race called the Leadville 100 MILE (160km) by a huge margin and did it while riding the last few miles on a rear flat tire. He was riding a Trek carbon offroad bike which is heavier than his madone.  He also didnt have any support like in road races to fetch him water.. yet he destroyed the field and the previous guy who had won more than a few times in a row.

He also ran a sub 3 hour NYC Marathon on his first try. The next year he reduced his time by a further 15 mins. Not bad for a guy that was overweight for running.

BUT I dont care... they have gifts I dont have .. no big deal .... when I ride I just try to beat myself... first in terms of speed or time taken and then in terms of reduced effort required for the same results over time.

Just my two cents .. or 2 paise (sp?). :)

oh , just hear them nearly going off the handle!, that's fun i mean, what enthusiasm is showing up. hey guys, at BBCH we willbe heading for ........ in the next few months:
  1. a superb trail competition with sandy bits between tight stands of casuarina, rounding dark Tamarind trees and maybe even swinging across a creek with frogs on Banyan tree roots, sleepy villagers watching , gaffing and finally cheering,  who does not wish to be there and compete and aim for  a new track record.........
  2. a road race with some flat km's to build up to the final furious nandi climb with . oh gosh , how many hair pins?, gangs of monkeys clapping and stealing the winners bananas, are you ready for it
  3. the coolest crit in bangalore the garden city ,flagged off by the chairman of CISTUP and Rohini Nilekani, with all the student crowd watching, cheering and campus cycling will become the rage throughout namma Bengaluru
  4. a technical downhill of the Sravan Durg kind with Nelly showing the way, (I mean how much to break with the front break and how much with the rear break if you have got one at all!)
  5. the famous late summer classic; the race around hesarghatta lake, with teams at  work like halli boys, kynkyny, bulldog, motorola and this other new telecom brand that recently arrived in town......!
  6. and the season ending long distance road race out of bangalore who knows yet where to , lets find t he route, ...........
  7. you name it , propose it.........!!!!!!!!!!!!
lets register, tell friends, start eating/dieting and training like Samim, Dipankar or Chris carmicheal and see whom we can crown new champions 2010 for bangalore. and by the end of 2010 we would like to see fan clubs emerging, crowds jostling  behind the railings and ropes near the finishing lines, sparkling Nasik white sprayed from the podium, race reports in the sports section of the indian express and much more
we got it all here, so near , so accessible to all , so much fun , and just great  to watch all the talents emerge; sprinter, team support  rider , climber, roller,  and all!
3 cheers for BBC the world famous bangalore biking club, or do I have to specify bicycling club?

Yes indeed there are definitly exceptional characters like Lance with serious drive and talent to excell in multiple disciplines, but I was just trying to illustrate to folks that there are many different types of cycling with different focuses and requirements which I think is interesting to know.

Samim,
Congratulations to you on your acheivement. It's an amazing feat
indeed!!!! Best wishes to you and your team for RAAM. God bless.
I'm so glad I was there at the end on sunday morning at CCD to see you
finish. One day in future, I'll claim this as my 15 minutes of fame!

Vivek,
Thanks for the excellent writeup on Samim's acheivement. It was the
closest we could get to living thru' the amazing ride.

Finally, not to forget Ramesh's ride of 350K. That's an amazing
acheivement in itself. Congratulations Ramesh.
During the same time, I believe Sudhir also rode around 250K. He rode
with me and Yogesh for some time in the AM on sunday. Sudhir, I hope
you finally got some good sleep post the ride. Great going.

Just got back online after almost a week, and probably felt every bit of the emotion you might have when this happened. This an awesome achievement, and brilliantly described as well. Like you said, for most of us "700km is 24 hrs" are mere words that we cannot relate to but just be in awe of. Wow. Samim, I feel too tiny to even say "Congrats" :) All the best with the training for the event - just the thought of which boggles the mind!

I am on BBC forum after a few days of sleep ( read too much work) and
what a news to read.

Great job Samim and Ramesh and an equally commendable account of the
day by Vivek.

You have made us proud .. no good news around about sports at all
other than GMC and TFN.

I work in night shifts almost dozing and today I am all eyes open and
excited, motivated and dejected too ( A very interesting debate on
News Hour, Times Now where everyone seems to be ready to sabotage any
CWG OC member found :) )

cheers,

Fair enough, but people are wishing him luck for RAAM 2010 when he's
