I write this mail from a very personal place in my heart, unlike other
ride reports, as yesterday’s mammoth achievement touched me very
deeply because of my great affection for both Samim, and the sport of
cycling.
I have only known Samim since just before the first TFN, we met at the
“group ride” workshop by him, organized by BOTS on NICE road. Since
then we have ridden quite a lot together and I have been following his
training and plans with interest and admiration. The RAAM story has
been in the air for a long time, but the stars have had to slowly
align to make things happen, and yesterday they seem to have
positioned themselves just right.
His qualifying requirement was 675 km in 24 hrs, but he decided to do
a nice round figure of 700 km within the same time. There are very few
people reading this who will understand what riding non-stop for 24
hrs means, and I am not one of them. Then when you actually think
about the distance itself, 700 km, that is another mind-boggling
thing. In fact it is so unbelievable, that many have always doubted
Samim’s achievements and plans, but I have seen him, and accompanied
him on a few of these crazy sessions, so to the skeptics I say “start
believing, and if you care about cycling in India, start supporting
and cheering this athlete who is making cycling history in this
country right now!”
A few of us joined Samim at the kick-off of his ride, there were a
folks from the BBC (Bangalore Bikers Club), his Bulldog team, family
and Wim and Kate Elfrink with their kids who have been very supporting
of his career since a while.
We took off at about 8:20 am, we were instructed by him and his
support team that we were not to ride alongside or in front of him,
but only behind. The incredible thing on that ride was the pace, it
was no joke keeping up, and I was wondering how one can hope to
complete that kind of a distance riding this hard! But clearly, there
are a few folks on the planet who can, quite demoralizing for the rest
of us, but I guess each to their own SPECIES!
We left Samim after the first loop of 70 km, and through the rest of
my day, breakfast, work, lunch, work, playing with the kids, visiting
in-laws, discussing the heat, dinner….this guy is still plowing away,
in 37 degrees celcius!
A bunch of us decided to catch him at the end of his 8th loop of 70 km
(560 km) at about 3 am, and ride through the rest of the night with
him till his finish at 8:20 am. He was definitely happy to see us all,
for a guy like him, the time, distance and pain are all durable, but
we were worried that boredom might kill him!!
We set off, and I was amazed at his state of mind, his ability to
converse and joke around in spite of being under very intense physical
strain. The pace was clearly a little less than when he started off
fresh, but it was still no joke at all, in fact every time he felt
good and recovered a little he would take off and hammer away at it
doing a good 40 to 45 kmh where the terrain permitted and then drop
back to 30, 35 and there abouts.
I stayed as close to him as allowed so he could feel a constant
presence and hoped that it would help him cover the remaining
distance, and I kept talking (whenever I got my breath back) as much
as possible as I was concerned about fatigue affecting his judgment
since the traffic on the highway kept increasing as the sun came up.
The amazing thing, is that his head was absolutely clear throughout,
he was totally focused through every pedal stroke.
He was in excruciating pain in his feet, and as one can imagine the
rest of his body was hurting too, but we kept joking about it. At some
point I said “there’s not much left now”, he turned back with a smile
and said “of me!?”.
At about 10 kms to the qualifying distance we were really focused on
the cyclocomp and the remaining time, it was a sort of count down,
everyone was tense and excited, us on the bikes and his amazing team
and family in the support car.
2 km….1.5 km……………..500 meters….I was looking at Samim watching his
meter, and I knew it when we hit 675 kms, because this incredible,
solidly built athlete just broke down, it was an overwhelming surge of
emotions under the most un imaginable physical strain. I could see
that these were not just tears of joy or pain, but the accumulated
effect of a lifetime’s hard work, suffering and perseverance, against
all odds.
We then stopped on the side of the road, it was hugs and tears all
around, I had the quivery lip and heavy eyes thing going on, but the
levee pretty much broke when I saw Zakir Bhai and Samim hug each other
crying. For those of you who don’t know Zakhir Bhai, he drives the
support car (24 hrs!!) and has been a friend of Samim’s for a very
long time, accompanying and supporting him on countless training
sessions of up to 600 odd kms at a time. He has seen and been a part
of all the effort, and I think is the one who understands this
achievement the best.
The qualifying distance was covered at 23 hrs with an hour to go at
about 7:20 am, so we had about 50 minutes to get back to the starting
point to complete his personal goal of 700 in 24. The remaining 25 kms
was amazing, supporters started showing up car after car, in the end
we were a convoy of a few bikers and numerous cars on the highway.
People leaning out of windows, standing through the sunroofs,
cheering, taking pictures and filming with their camcorders. There
were people waiting along the side of the high way, it was superb,
Samim kept saying “I cant believe this, this is the most amazing day
of my life”, I was also getting running commentary from him on the
spectators, “oh, that’s my student from…..oh, and that’s so and
so…….hey that’s my brother in law, wow, this is incredible…”
I was in awe at seeing the amount of support for this individual, and
the sport, and I was also an emotional wreck when we reached the
finish line because I thought this is a great day for Samim, but also
historical for Indian cycling. I was overwhelmed because myself and so
many of us have dreams, but here I witnessed one actually come true. I
salute you buddy, and your team, and your family.
I wish Samim and team the very best for the actual Race. It is a race
where just completion is massive. They will really have to work
together under impossible conditions, go and do your best, we are
already proud!
Affectionately
Vivek

Awesome achievement from Samim as well as Ramesh. Yes, I think you got
it right - cant even imagine what it would be like to ride like that
for that duration. Just amazing.
I hope and pray that Samim gets to achieve all that he wants in his
cycling career. He has certainly earned it and deserves it.
I was at CCD after the ride, and wanted to congratulate Samim, but he
was sort of surrounded by family and friends so felt a bit self
conscious. Anyway, I hope at least that he will eventually read the
congratulatory notes here.

And to think in the actual race, he will have to do it 10 days in a
row. That will be one for the ages.
Jagan
Good wishes to him. Hope he does India proud in the RAAM.

This is not really accurate. Samim's main talent is extreme endurance,
this is where he surpasses the rest. Cycling like running has many
different areas where different people have specific talents. You will
never see a marathon runner win or even compete in the 100 meter dash,
and a sprinter win the marathon. They are completely different
disciplines and require different skills and even physical
constitutions, not to mention training, diet and so on.
Cycling is the same, Mark Cavendish is the fastest sprinter alive, but
he is not built and talented to climb a mountain like Pantani.
RAAM is an extreme ultra event, it requires a totally different mental
and physical ability than a 1 day classic. For the most part it is an
individual race, which is completely different in every way from a
short distance team event.
So in short, not all cyclists are good at all types of races (speaking
of the top level of competition here) and they usually concentrate on
their specific area of talent and expertise.

Vivek,
Thanks for the excellent writeup on Samim's acheivement. It was the
closest we could get to living thru' the amazing ride.
Finally, not to forget Ramesh's ride of 350K. That's an amazing
acheivement in itself. Congratulations Ramesh.
During the same time, I believe Sudhir also rode around 250K. He rode
with me and Yogesh for some time in the AM on sunday. Sudhir, I hope
you finally got some good sleep post the ride. Great going.
Regards,
Manju Mysore
Vivek,
Thanks for the excellent report. It was as close as some of us can get
living thru' the ride.
Finally, not forgetting Ramesh. Great effort!!! Congratulations to you
on a super acheivement.
I believe, Sudhir also, during the same time rode around 250K. Great
effort Sudhir. I hope you got enough sleep post the ride. He joined
Yogesh and I as we did our sunday "Bangalore darshan" ride through
Yelahanka, Hesaraghatta, NH4, to south Bangalore.
