You can try one more route as mentioned below to Mysore which is via Kanakapura.  This route is around 20kms longer, but not much of traffic:

Kanakapura Road --> Kanakapura --> Saathanooru --> Malavalli --> Bannooru --> Mysore.

I felt this route is quite scenic compared to the usual Mysore road.  But there are not many restaurants on this road except for few small hotels.

It is not longer. Roughly the same distance. I have gone Mysore both ways

Ofcourse....its a decent road....its actually a part of National Highway connecting to Dindigul in Tamil Nadu.  My last travel on this route to Mysore was during 2006 Feb and the road was almost good till Mysore except for few bad patches in between.

I would recommend this route considering the safety and a calmer ride!

not many eateries / shops enroute ... u might have to plan your hydration suffeciently.

I agree....this route is for a calm ride.
The usual Mysore route (via Mandya) has heavy traffic and its almost like riding in ring roads of bangalore.
But in the route via Kanakapura....only till Kanakapura(around 50kms) you may see some traffic(but not like Mysore road), but after that very less vehicles on the road.

If you have more stamina and time, you can take a detour to visit Bheemeshwari on this stretch, which is a very scenic place.
