Hello bikers!

This might be a strange and stupid questions; however, was wondering
if I can put a bunch of 700x23c old tyres to any good use. Though
they
are not good anymore for the bike (all torn or ruptured), I didnt
want
to throw them in trash can before anyone had a need or good
suggestion
for an alternate use. Also trying to follow the principle of "Reduce,
Reuse, and Recycle" as much as I can, rather than "Recycle-bin". :-)

Happy biking!
Arun

Arun,

If you have a Big Bazaar nearby, you might want to sell it in exchange of Discount Coupons (redeemable till 1st April 2012)... thereby you follow the principle of Recycle.

Some people make them into handbags or belts.

Big Bazaar has this limited scheme of accepting anything that has scrap value like news papers, books, plastics, leather goods, electronics, tyres, old clothes and in return they give you exchange coupons redeemable for a 10% discount on food items and 25 % on other products like clothes, utensils, furniture. Like if I bring 10 kg of Newspaer , they will give Rs. 300 exchange coupons (Rs. 30/kg) and later when I buy clothes for Rs. 3000 - I will have to pay only Rs. 2250 (25 % discount).

Now the good thing is they also take old car tyres, bike tyres, glass which other wise has no use to us. The nearby scrap dealer never accepts used tyres, old clothes and we wonder what to do with this so-called waste or e-waste. But everything is recyclable and finds good use in some industry or some place. Big Bazaar is actually breaking even during the entire deal.

They have this scheme in the months of Feb-March every year.

Yep, I miss that too. If I plan to do that in Bangalore, at this age, I will be considered insane. :-P

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll first try use it as liners and the if it doesnt work the BB.

Thing about big bazaar is, they are not just taking junk off your hands - they are making you buy more stuff from them. If you get Rs.100 from them for your scrap, it is not in cash but as a voucher. And to realize the voucher, you need to make a purchase of Rs.400. Not a bad deal if you play your cards right. And is good marketing on their part.

You can give them to me :)
I could use some rubber for doing some DIY projects.
OTOH you could cut it up into suitable pieces and use it as shock
absorber for various kinds of things. Table legs, LPG cylinders, etc.
You can also cut them and stick them onto sharp surfaces with epoxy to
make your house hazard free.

Endless possibilities :)

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. As Johnny shared the link on recycling tyres, I finally made them as the new tyre's liners and today's 50 km ride went well. Though it makes the new ones a bit 'rock-hard', I think for our roads, and my kinda ride, it works well. Cutting the old one's was the only trouble :-)

Thanks once again and happy riding!
