Just curious ..

What is your average commute speed? And What is the maximum speed you hit during your commutes?

My average : 22 kmph over about 8 kms; Max is 31 kmph. And I ride a MTB (Trek 3700)

My speed is 20 for about 6 hours and then it drops gradually on my Trek 3700. On Road bike it's close to 25-27 on 5 hour ride.

My commute distance: 25 KM one way. Time taken in the morning (7:00 AM) 55 mins. Time taken in the evening (riding through some terrible traffic the last 7 KM, which isn't the problem at all in the morning)(1:15 mins)

I ride a Trek 1.5 ( the one with the side stand that some people were making fun of today morning :) )

Distance - 15km
Avg speed - 30km/h.

On the way back the avg drops considerably because the stretch of road between Marathahalli and HAL signal is very bad.

(on a side note: Trek 1.5 with a side stand is a serious insult to the bike. Btw, who did you buy that bike from? There are only 4 such bikes in BLR, 1 or 2 in Chennai and 1 in Hyd. From what I remember the owners in BLR are - Aditya Yadav, Abhinandan Nath (bought from Doc D), Rohan and me. So, where did you get it from?)

This is an interesting thread.

I have 11 km one way. Time taken in the morning is between 22-25 mins.

In the evening, mine is a paradox since I take lesser time. its usually between 18-20 mins.

Max speed, 52.1 kmph, courtesy the downhill stretch on outer ring road.

@Vasu: Not sure if you'd tried some inner roads from Marathalli to HAL Signal - the current road work creates havoc on the main road.

At Marathalli market junction, take right into the Karthik Nagar short cut. Around 100 meters from there, you will find a left turn that goes into HAL quarters, only two wheelers can go in that. Take that turn and go straight, you'll reach the other side of HAL quarters. Take right towards Basavanagar Bus Stop. Just before Amman temple, or Meenakshi wines which is more popular (sigh), you will find a left turn that goes into Annasandrapalaya. Straight into that, and you will reach the CV Raman Nagar main road. From here you could choose to join the HAL signal again, or take right and continue on Jeevan Bhima nagar road.

Not sure if you've tried this, might help if you havent. People here dont see roadies so often, so you'd be a sight! Will try to complete a google map thing for this, might help others.
Regards,
Anand.

Anand,

That sounds great! Will try it some day.

The problem is my return starts after 10pm and at that time I am never in a mood to experiment unknown roads. These days I have started taking Sarjapura flyover > Iblur road > Agara > Koramangala > Sony world > IRR > Domlur > I. Nagar 2nd Stg.

Vasu,

These are residential areas and at 10 pm dogs are on the prowl and quite a few packs at that. So you probably are better off with your current route :)

Its a good alternative before 9 PM.

Sorry just noticed the first post also asked for max speed during commute.

If I gun for it then I hit 48 - 50km/h speed between HAL police station and the signal after that. These days I don't ride that fast, thanks to the morons at  BBMP. At the end of that short downhill there used to be a speed breaker. These days they've removed it and the place where speed breaker used to be is rough. So no more riding fast on that stretch...

On the new route back from office I generally do 50 - 55 km/h between Ejipura and EGL on Inner Ring Road.

I ride a pretty bad section of road but its alot of fun too. There is alot of slush alot of tiny roads and pretty short and steep sections and sharp turns. The tarmac is awesome one day and its slushfest on another (thanks to BBMP). But the best part is you get to see alot of kids of local BMX bikes jumping all over the place. My most usual route http://app.strava.com/activities/26982880

Commute Distance 13.3km - 17.8km depending on the route mood weather etc. I prefer to take the route with more traffic and slush. Its fun to piss off everyone stuck in traffic while you zoom past!
Average Speed - 20-25kmph
Top Speed - Hit 68kmph once while on my way back post midnight.

Vasu- If we can find the where the guy works, I can go and remove the stand one day. :)

Add me to the list.

Insult to the bike! Oh please! It's a machine. Machines are merciless and they deserve to be treated mercilessly. And a side stand makes sense to me at least because I ride my bike everywhere :)

While we climb the building we can get the stand off the bike and figure out how you can park it without the stand :)

I ride the same bike to office and I have no stand and neither does Vasu.

somehow by feel, it has...it got puncture when had no option to ride for two days, trying to get attention ;)

i generally love to drench in rain...in college, one dark (no electricity) rainy night (that time, had a very old one), the chain got jammed suddenly at the gate, and got stuck for 2 or 3 mins, happened once in two and half year. After reaching the place, where used to sit, saw...was smashed by a lorry which skidded from the highway just 4/5 sec back...the driver was about to come out...so helped the helper and driver to come out and kissed her to save my life :)

somehow i have similar feeling with my motorbike, camera, lappy and some non-living objects also.

One way distance is 19 km. Average speed in the morning is about 20 kmph, average on the return ride is about 18.5 kmph. No idea of the max speed, but somewhere around 40 kmph I imagine.

Btw, Darshan: You are not the only one who commutes by cycle to Brigade gateway :-). I am a bike commuter too, and often see your bike parked next to mine on the 3rd floor parking area.

There are days when I thought I was speed daemon and days when i felt like a leisure commuter.. But it has always been 25 minutes.

My commutevused to be 30kms and I used to take 1 hour both ways with rolling terrain and couple of 12 % gradient climbs of 300 to 400 meters thrown in. Route was jp Nagar 7th phase to Peenya via vasanthpura-rajarajeshwari nagar-bangalore university-outer ring road-sunkada katte.

Route was awesome and I always used to race against time. Fastest I had done on this stretch is 54 minutes. Most of the timeon trek 4300 and sometimes on the fuji. Max speeds have been upto 60kmph.

Last week did ooty via kothagiri. On the Way back max speed was 76kmph. Raced an Alto guy showing off after the downhill and overtook him at 67kmph with his mouth wide open.

I dont commute, but I do a circuit around the old airport as a 24 km morning ride sometimes - the stretch after Marathalli to the HAL Airport entrance is the low point of the ride because of the poor surface, so I am really interested in the back road you mentioned. My average speed for city commutes has been ~18 kmph.. If I am in a real hurry to reach somewhere, then max I have done is 23kmph over 18 kms..
The top speed that I ever reached on my Trek 3700D is 48 kmph (think it was somewhere on the IRR)...

I feel its really difficult to maintain even 20 kmph in the city consistently. Hats off to those who clock average speeds >28 kmph ..

This thread is giving me a complex. Even on early morning rides my average seldom exceeds 20 kmph. However, occasional glances at the cyclocomp indicates I do a reasonably brisk 25-27 for much of the ride, with a maximum of 30-32 (on seemingly level ground). I guess the involuntary slow-downs and halts add up. In traffic my average speed drops to 15-17 kmph, depending on the time of the day. I ride both a hybrid and an MTB with slicks, and I don't find a significant difference.

I take it a little easy too, so that I should'nt be sweating like a pig at office, but I do :P. My brother and myself used to touch 27kmph average speed in our morning rides of 25kms . +1 to quizling.

am to beginning to feel rather sobered down and not too grand of my apparently exalted cycling abilities after reading this post :/
woe to the fellow who began the thread :)

have been travelling for about 2 years now for a dist of about 15kms one way through the city and very rarely do i do it in less than an hour.
avg commute time wud be an hour(morning) and an hour an fifteen(evening) bringing my speeds to 15kph morning and 12kph evening.

seriously guys, tips please. how do you manage to maintain 20+ kph on regular commutes through the city traffic.
raises some qs. is ur speed gross (pun not intended), or net i.e. is traffic signal stoppage time accounted for ?
and is the avg an avg of cursory glances at the speedo ( which a small calculation shall show to be greater than as computed by tot dist/ tot time ) ?

Most bike speedometers which show average speed measure only rolling averages. Endomondo allows you to decide whether to auto-pause on stops or not. Perhaps you should clarify what sort of average you guys are comparing, so this isn't apples vs oranges.

As for me, I dont often commute on the bike - and when I do, I go slow to avoid arriving in immediate need of a shower.

The average commute speed depends on the nature of the route more than the physical capabilites of the rider. If the route is pretty straight with smooth roads and no trafficy intersections, you could ride real fast. People who take a shower after the ride can forget about being sweaty, and push hard.

I commute on my hybrid from HSR layout sector 2 to Marathahalli (8.5km). Traffic free mornings when I am plan to take a shower at office, I average ~28 kmph. However when I want to skip the shower at office, I ride at average 20kmph. Return journey is always under 20kmph, even if I push hard, because of the traffic.

Hi Shreeju,

Rightly said, the route matters. My avg was 28 and max 37 which was on my route from Sarjapur ORR to decathlon however when I went on Banergatta route it fell to 24-25kmph as I had to wait on the traffic signals. simple way to calc is total dist/total time no need to rely on the comp. Also, please ensure u configure the tyre size correctly in the cyclo comp.

Varun
