A week ago I bought my first bike ACT 110 Plus and very happy with the
bike.
After a few trials and understanding the bike i wanted to go for
accessories and went to Decathlon n impressed with fair staff and wide
range of accessories at the store. But I didn't yet have registered to
buy, mean while i was familiar with brands and prices of accessories i
needed.

One of my friend suggested to visit RR, I called them and checked for
the items i needed and was happy hearing from the RR guy that they
have more wider range than at Decathlon. Went there the same evening
wanting wait anymore.

But there found all the accessories other than Decathlon brands were
poor qualified China made. With no further thinking i bought cyclo
comp DC 9w which he said 800 Rs, an ordinary bell 135 Rs which i
bargained to 100 (which i then herd not even murmuring in traffic
sound).

Then i asked for decathlon locks which are sold for 260 Rs for pair of
3 at decathlon. But at RR same locks each piece off pair was priced
250/- I decided not to buy them.

Now i asked him to fit cyclo comp and bell by the time i buy other
items. Fitting was done with perfection. But he had fitted a used comp
which i found and got it replaced. I asked him for warranty card, he
didnt have one, instead he blamed Decathlon that their warranty is
fake, I didn't like the way he said it and decided not to buy any
other thing from him as he is not giving warranty.

Gave my card to swipe. shocked to see him counting cyclo comp as 850
Rs which a few moments ago he said 800 Rs, I made him set it right.
Now he started saying 5% extra if he swipe card, I got angry n paid
him cash with out a word and asked for bill and now he says 12% extra
as tax. I asked him to take off things and pay back my money. without
a word he gave me the bill and starting muttering"kuch nahi mila isme
(got nothing from this)..."

Then i thought that will be my last visit to RR and went to Decathlon
with my friend who had membership with decathlon and bought all i
needed.

Hi Pavan,

I had bought few items at RR cycles in the past. The main thing while purchasing there is you should know the real market price of the items that you are purchasing. That guy is member of this mailing list and hope that he is listening.

I would like to share on such experience. I was looking for a cycle bell and went to RR Cycles. He showed me one ding-dong bell. It was Rs. 420/-. When enquired for the reason, why it is so expensive. He said it is a french made. I could hardly hear its sound. I then asked for an Indian made bell. He showed me 2-3 bells. The cheapest one was the one with plastic knob. I know it would not last for long. After bargaining for a metallic bell the least I could get was for Rs. 50/-. I then decided to checkout other shops. That same evening I went to cycle repair near my home. I got a very nice steel bell (Indian style) for Rs. 25/- (including fitting).

I saved Rs. 400/- and the bell is audible in any kind of traffic.

I suggest that you check out prices of accessories in small shops. They are much cheaper compared to big shops like these.

Cheers,
Jeevan

Hi Jeevan,

Thanks for the info, i will keep this in mind for future purchases.
What bothered me was that guy not accepting card, refusing to give
bill and making silly allegations over big chain like decathlon.
I would not mind paying a bit more on expensive and delicate products
with warranty as i can use it with peace of mind. But this guy was
refusing making any evidence for the purchase (refusing card payment
and bill) which may fail me to prove the purchase date (in case).

If RR guy is following these posts, I request him to make fair deals
in future n make bill for every purchase and keep the transactions
white.

Regards,
Pavan

I am NOT an RR fan but in all fairness, he did not refuse a bill. He
asked you to pay the legal tax, which he should have charged and
billed anyway.

But yes, you are right. RR has no reasonably fixed price, and I hate
bargaining, so I have landed up paying more than others have for
identical items.

hi

I too have bought a lot of accessories from RR but now I've started
doubting about his prices. A shop in hanumanthanagar is charging Rs.
10/- for tyre lever but the same levers he is charging Rs. 50/-.
Probably he is too gready. If RR is watching this thread beware!!
you'll shortly loose 1000's of customers. Dont' try to misguide
people. I request RR to post price list in this forum for all the
items which is sold.

Interesting thread.

"A shop in hanumanthanagar is charging Rs.

I think it would be good to have the shop name. Since it will help others too,.

Ya, possible. May be "anyone-who-buys-a-highend-bikes-doesnot-care-about-money" is the thinking of these fellows.

My friend Ravi (Chenna Ravi) has got the mud guard from RR and said it was couple of 10s less than from Decathlon. Guess should check the quality now for that.

A price list for atleast the frequently used spares/acc for bikes, yes will certainly help our community to pick the right choice.

Ok guys, let's please not bash up RR too much over here (I guess a little slap-on-hands is ok for a reality check). RR and most of the other cycle shops have been in the business long before Decathlon and other guys started their business, so they are used to selling phoren/firangi goods at a price-premium. The reality is changing soon. Indian market has always involved bargaining. The only reason I am writing this plug for them is because they were the first guys to introduce an entry level road bike (LA Urbano) into the Bangalore market.

All cycle businesses in Bangalore have a fiduciary responsibility towards their family. So, if you paid more, someone was able to take more food to their family (it's tough when you are not a salaried person). I know it hurts when you discover you paid a little bit more than someone else. But, it could very well be that they purchased a lot more items in one shot or bargained harder. I have paid more than the market price for many items, sometimes it's meant that I have gotten better service, and at other times it just meant that I got screwed. But, don't take it too hard, please move on and smile :-).

My only advise to anyone buying bicycle accessories or for that matter anything in Bangalore (or for that matter buying anything anywhere in the world) is to do some research. Ask around. Send emails to this forum. Check if you are buying the right thing to solve the right problem (Ex: if you are a casual rider on a budget, you don't need a road bike). Google. Sheldon Brown. Check for substitutes. Compare prices. In short, do your homework. Finally, please do not scrimp on safety items, please do buy a helmet :-)

This email is not to make anyone feel bad, on the other hand I hope it helps you feel good, helps with moving on and getting you to join us for our Month-end long ride on August 1st 2010 to Nandi :-) (Ok, I could not help but stick that in),
Yogesh.

I've bought a fair bit from RR Ulsoor. I know where he tricks people,
it isn't in the branded Decathlon stuff. Those products have a price
tag, and he sells them for cheaper since he buys them in wholesale.
He makes money in the generic products that all cycle shops carry.
Hercules V Brake pads are difficult to find, but are priced at
something like 20 a piece. He'll sell them for 70-90 for a pair. Same
case with LA products.

@Srinivas: I remember buying tire levers (the metal ones) for 35 a
pair.

Caveat emptor and all that. The shops are well stocked and have some
good accessories.

Hi Yogesh,

I agree your argument. And I am not disputing that risk taken by RR in
introducing new range of products in a new market.

And I found his service really good and reliable.

I just wanted to keep everyone posted about their bads also.

Completely and totally agree Pavan. Doing bijnesh (trying Guru-bhai accent from the movie, "Guru") in Bangalore has many nuances - you have pointed out a lot of them in your email.

Hi Deepa,

Good to hear you had a fair deal with RR :) .
Infact I am very happy with their service, but not with varying
prices. I hate the most when people say 5% or 12% extra with my card
in their hand, that shows them greedy and incompetent and discourages
me to do further deals with them.

Cheers,
Pavan

Am not sure of fair deal in RR but they are good at service, if it is
some small mechanical works they don't charge you.
Note: this is my experience in RR Madiwala store.

and regarding the 5% charge for card its not only RR, there are plenty
of stores who charge you that (for card transactions u have 2 options
either u pay monthly fixed charges to bank or pay the transaction fee
every time you do a transaction). but I was told about 5% by RR before
I swipe card.

As I do my homework before I go and purchase a bit costly item, I
remember we hijacked a hybrid bike thread to Floor pump discussion.
conclusion beware of the aprox charge of the item u are going to pay
before you walk-in to a shop.

so +1 for RR.

This guy is a cheat!! He sells 2yr old model misguiding new customers with an attractive price. Before buying anything from him please do a thorough check on cycle components and spec sheet.

Almost bought a 2yr old model projected to me as a 1yr old model.

RR Cycles has been supportive of many efforts of cycling ..
We do with them CYCLE RECYCLE - people can just drop in the old cycles and they refurbish at no cost and we donate them to the people who need it.

They have provided good service to all my friends who purchased the bike there.

I shall bring this to Rakesh's notice and see how we can make sure RR Cycles provide quality service and customer satisfaction.

Thanks & Regards

Selling 2 year old cycle at a deep discount is not misguiding no? That sort of stock clearance practice everyone does. Did he misguide you in any other way? Asking for clarity on the issue.

I'd like to say something here. Fundamentally they are not cycling experts , so they tend to sell what they have. If you purchase at RR(or any other LBS that is not run by a cyclist), you need to understand that they may not be in a position to give you the info that you are looking for, even with the best of intentions, they may sell something to you that is not ideal, so it is best to go with someone knowledgeable about cycling.

I've also had my share of doubts of buying from RR madivala. But I've bought a bike and tons of accessories from them. I had first visited them around March 2011. Guess they grown since then and have learnt from the mistakes they had made in the past. Plus Rakesh sometimes gives fabulous discounts for regular customers.

But again they are not expert advisers. You need to know what you are buying if you are buying from them.

Rakesh @ RR-Madivala I believe is the reason for good customer service at that location. I recently went to the Ulsoor location; that felt ok. The one at Marathahalli -- have not had a good vibe about that place; haven't been there for ~3yrs, though it's quite close to my place.

But I'm not sure whether all that effort would be worth it. I don't think he will give you any cash back now.

I found out a Giant dealer in Yehlanka (Sangam International bikes). Getting the 2013 model for the same price RR Marathalli quoted for 2012 model. So I think you can take a look here as well. U can also check out Pedals and Wheels if you want a hybrid or road bike. He s reasonable as well.
