are you looking for a solution to clean the rotors ? If yes - you can pick up isopropyl alcohol at the chemist (or just isopropyl alcohol swaps - much more convenient).

I've always wondered. Besides bleeding the hydraulic brakes and
refilling them, what else special does one need to do every once in a
while?
Aren't these things pretty much maintenance free?

well .. depends.
I dont understand why - but most folks love to shift gears as soon as they see a 'gear bicycle' and love to touch the rotor when they see a bicycle with disc brakes. Twitchy fingers.

So it helps to clean the rotors once in a while.

If you plan to give your bicycle to the local bicycle shop for 'oiling'' you will have to spend a lot more time cleaning up.

this one time ... we had to remove a litre of diesel which some bike dealer thought would make the bike smoother !! Idiot.

yup tell me about how pain full it is TWITCHY Fingers, feels like showing only one finger to those, but i feel its the way people say hi to the bike , notice the first thing will be pressing the brake levers then the gear levers (if noticed)

oiling Part its not funny what perception the local guys have man they want to make fast things faster i guess heheh, an the tool is local oil just pour it all the more you put faster it goes (some times it goes so fast that it never comes back hehehe)
coming to the point on cleaning the disc Brakes like rohan suggested The alcohol swaps is fine or brake cleaner spray used for dirt bikes, that also works good but little expensive. may find that at high end motorbike shop.
