Hello Bikers

I recently bought a Schwinn Sporterra for my commuting.

As of now my bike runs on the default frontal & rear V brakes.

Is it possible to upgrade to disc brakes which i feel is very
effective for braking in wet conditions.

If yes, where can i get the accessories to fit the same. and approx
how much would that cost for me ?

I think the frame(angle between seat stays) and forks have to be wider to accomodate the disc brakes..... Unless the Sporterra has been built forseeing for this upgrade (which i doubt), i dont think it'll happen. And your frame and forks should have brake bosses(where the brake pad plus stuff is atached to the frame) for the disc brakes too

For e.g. A trek 3700 cant have discs added on without major tweaking, but a Trek 4300 can.....

(Ok.. im talking from some vague memory of a discussion with Rohan long long ago..... Experts pls correct me where im wrong)

Thats odd, because the same provisions I saw in 2010 3700 for disk brakes, i saw in 4300 too, which is basically the provision in the frame to mount disc brakes.

I think V brakes should be fine enough for city commute in wet
conditions.
Maintaining a disc brake is a overhead as far as i know.

Sorry for not being of any use though.

dont think there is a major overhead in maintaining disc brakes (unless its hydraulic, wherein you need to know where you can bleed em).

disc brakes do make a difference when you are braking in wet weather conditions, but dont think it really makes a difference on a commute ! If you modulate your braking, the V brakes are effective enough. Besides, I dont think you would be clipping whilst its raining right :)

dont waste the money on some cheap disc brakes (I dont think any good brake sets are available in the market at the moment), instead buy a good friend and yourself a nice ice cream and enjoy it :)

I can vouch from experience that cheap disc brakes are not worth it. I modified my Hero Thunder to add disc brakes (including twisting the frame to make them fit) and for the next two years had the most miserable braking experience. Nothing I did could get them to hold a grip. I eventually went back to V-brakes.
