Has anyone been using kerosene for cleaning chains. I used it on my hybrid for the first time this weekend. The chain looked cleaner. However I am not sure about the long term effect of this technique.

Any insights would be helpful

thanks

I use Pril soap solution with hot water as suggested by BOTS for all my bike's chain cleaning.

Couple of times I tried with Clinic Plus shampoo as well.

I use diesel, and find it to be very good too...

I have been using diesel from past 3 years, twice very year( or once every 700~800 kms). Not sure of the bad effects. I guess for my frequency of cleaning its been ok.

thanks for all the responses. It seems that going with kerosene, diesel or hotwater + soap combinations are all valid..

Had a follow on question.

After the chain has been cleaned and dried; and I lubricate it with oil; when I run my fingers on the chain it seems that there is still some grime on the chain since my fingers are black when I run them over it.

I think there is an easy way on roadbikes, you can remove the chain and dip it in diesel for 15min and take it out, it will be as shiny as new. I haven't tried it, but my friend has tried and is very positive about it. Experts here may be able to comment on the same.

I am happy wiping it off with diesel and cloth itself.

regards,
Ashok

First wipe the chain and remove the dirt as much as possible then Apply kerosene  and leave it for an hours and then clean it .

After lubricate oil, clean or wipe extra oil from the chain.

If possible try to use finish line lube.

I use Colin spray with cloth to wipe clean the chain.

Use a Wet lube after letting the chain dry for around 10-15 mins.
