Guys,

In general what are good sources for elevation maps?

A bunch of us are planning a ride to Kanyakumari starting Aug 9, for 4 days.

For just that bit of prep, it would be nice to have an elevation map of NH7 between Bangalore and Kanyakumari.

Can anyone help?

Also in general, not just between Blore and KK, but sources for these maps between A and B anywhere please?

Anand.

I use
Just enter the google map link of the route for which you want elevation profile at the "Or provide the URL of data on the Web:" box on this page and click draw profile :)

GPSvisualiser and such tools generate elevation profiles from DEM
data, so make sure you understand that before using the data.

Not clear which is best for a cyclist

A barometer gives the best measurement of altitude and is used in aviation. However, since we can't carry barometers ...

Some GPS devices claim to have a barometric altimeter. Is this more accurate than the use of digital elevation model data.

DEM data should be good enough for a cyclist. Terrain height changes over the long term. The resolution of some DEMs is within 10 meters.

I too been looking for a site where I can easily get the elevation profile for a route -- from the various site posted above, looks like cycleroute.org is what I need.  I can give it start and end points, and it plots the route (using Google maps), and shows the elevation profile below that.  And using the mouse pointer, I can correlate points on the map with the elevation profile.

I was expecting gpsies.com to provide this, but when I tried using it some time back, I realised that I cannot plot a route there (or I don't know how).  I have to import the route -- and if I import a KML from google maps, gpsies.com just detects 2 points (start and end), and says something like 'not enough points'. :(

GPS visualiser is good -- just that it does_not show the map, so it's not straightforward to correlate points on the map with the elevation profile.

The origin/destination search on cycleroute.org, felt iffy at times -- it was_not finding Bangalore or Mysore.  But that might have been due to poor net connectivity (wifi signal).  Tried a few searches later, and things seemed fine.  One thing though -- it doesn't seem to be giving a way to store a link to a route.  So if I plot something and want to circulate it, looks like there is no way.

thanks,  -{db}.
