Hi, which is the best website/resource for learning if it is likely to
rain on someday. I would like to check the night before my work
commute to decide if I should cycle or not.

I tried doing this too using accuweather.com and weather.com, turned out to be huge flops.. I dont think there was a single day during the last week of May and the first week of June in which the forecast was correct..

I have a close friend who is a scientist working on weather changes on land and oceans, and he has worked in India and a few other developed asian countries.
As per him, compared to few other asian countries that are almost accurate in weather forecasts, India still lacks the ability due to the lack of sufficient monitoring stations around the cities/country. He quoted an example recently. In any city in Japan or Soth Korea or Singapore, there would be monitoring devices for every 4 or 5-km radius area, but even in major metros like Bangalore, Chennai etc., the entire city has just 3 or 4 monitoring stations or even less, which makes it impossible to predict area based weather, and the lack of sufficient historical data makes it impossible to predict the future pattern, though these guys have sufficient computing power.

And we all know, Bangalore rains are so unpredictable and erractic. Most of the times, it rains on one strech of the Ring Road, and totally dry on another strech. Unless the Met. dept. guys have many monitoring devices along such streches, it is impossible to predict anything.

So my piece of advice, don't even bother to look at the forecasts. Just look at the sky and go by your instict, and keep your rain gear handy. :)

Well, frankly, my wife's been using forecasts from http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/43295.html (summary delivered thru sms alerts thru Zook.in) - and with some approximation, it gives u a fair idea. Even the "hourly" ones are indicative enough on most days.

One learning - "Thunderstorms" != rain.

Sameer

Looks like the overarching response indicates that I am on my own.
They say Donkeys start braying before it rains and are very good
indicators of rain, know any place where I can get a donkey on the
cheap? :-).

Then you will have to tie the Donkey to your bike and drag along. How else will you know if its gonna rain in one area and not the other along the way. :)

Hosur road. I see a lot of them near Silk Board. BTW how early do they start braying? If its a good 6-8 hours of forewarning then I think it makes sense. Or else like Murali said, you'll have to drag one along. Hey why drag it when you can ride on it instead.

No offence please. :D I only meant in humour and nothing else. If you felt bad, then I'll probably just pick one from Hosur Road and home deliver it to you to make up for it.

Shreelesh, You said "I see a lot of them near Silk Board". Do you see
them waiting for Volvo buses going towards electronics city wearing
fancy badges from emblazoned with fancy companies? :-) This is a
complement for those of us (me included) who go in that direction, as
we are the heavy lifters who spend late nights keeping India's GDP in
good shape. Go Bikers! ~~ Yogesh

Hell no. I'd rather stand in the middle of a dark stretch on Hosur Road on a moonless night wearing black dress than say that. Wonder what made you think that way but good you asked me rather than keep that inside. I actually meant donkeys as in the animal. Once after you cross the flyover going towards e-city, sometimes you get to see quite a few of them on the road in early mornings (again the animal and not humans).

Oh, this brought such a lovely image to my mind and I just can't stop laughing!...and given the fact that in Blr, a heavy downpour can last all of five minutes, then it can be bright sunshine for the next hour, followed by another bout of rain, that will be one overworked donkey!

I can just imagine all the byke-makers now advertising, "Buy one cycle, get a donkey free"....Merida and Strida will become Meridonk and Stridonk!

Weather.com is ok if you don't go for long-term forecast, at least here in St Louis. I generally switch it on for the day, hour-by-hour forecast.

Whats the big deal? keep a rain jacket in ur backpack and u r covered. U can conveniently ride if its drizzling, albeit at a slower pace. And if its pouring, just pause for a while for it to pass.

Just remember to clean ur drivetrain when u reach destination. (w ur rag in the saddlepack)

Is there a quick solution for brakes? My rear (regular/caliper) brakes
don't work very well when it rains. God knows, I need those brakes
especially when it rains because of the need coming to stop.

+1
Since I don't mind the rain and am more concerned about the laptop in my (not really rainproof) backpack, I prefer to use a rucksack rain cover. It also prevents mud spatters on the bag and the rain cover is really easy to clean.

Guys, for 6 years I lived in the Nethelands and rode cycles every
single day, either commuting, sport riding, or both. It rains almost
all year round there, light rain mostly, but also pretty heavy stuff.
You just cover up and stay dry, or don't - and get wet! But nobody
even considers not riding as it is just the normal way to get around.
Here in India at least the temperature is in your favour, so no big
deal, it's only water. If your going to ride, just ride, like Sudhir
said throw a raincoat in your bag, that's what I do too, and keep your
stuff dry in your bag with plastic covers or whatever.
There is a crazy fear of rain in this country that I haven't seen
anywhere else, and I am sure you have all noticed the average Indian
man's mortal fear of getting his precious hair wet! So the "curchief"
gets busted out, knotted in four corners and placed on the head, or
better yet, the ever so stylish "plastic cover"! There is a solution
to every problem folks, get out there and ride.

You got it reverse, buddy. There's a problem to every solution :)

What scares me around here is that the drivers don't slow down at all
in the rain.
