I'd gone on many prior occasions into Lalbagh with my bicycle,
through the gate from K.H road ( Or double road as it is known).

Today too i did the same thing, and i met up with a friend of mine and
we were playing badminton.
Then these officials come and tell me that cycles are not allowed and
that even playing any kind of sport inside lalbagh is not allowed,
quite rudely i must add. (We played for about 2 hours before this
problem came up, thats how slow they are in finding out)
When i asked to see ID , he refused and said he dinn have any, saying
that the very fact that the security were with him made him an
official.

He then took me to some higher up, that guy was even more rude. Said
he'd call the police on me.I dinn budge , cuz i knew that there were
no boards stating that cycles are not allowed from where i entered. So
in effect if at all they did have such rules , then they should have
made it clear is what i was trying to say to him. That didn't work ,
he pretended to take me to the cops, i walked along knowing fully well
that there was no mistake on my part. When we got to the gate he let
me off with a warning.

I'm aware of the Go Green initiative that went to Forum Mall a while
back for parking issues, so for heavens sake why not let bicycles
inside a lung space like Lalbagh when they let automobiles enter on
permission quite frequently. This beats their purpose of installing
electric carts inside the park.

Shravan

While I did the same mistake of riding my bike inside lalbaug once
(never again), I guess it is best left for people to walk calmly
without
having to worrying about "moving obstacles" on their daily walk path.
I would strongly advise against riding bikes
inside lalbaug. We as a community are educated and may ride patiently
and make way for people who walk daily, but
if you extrapolate the rules to other people who are not so polite,
things may go out of hand.

+ 1

Let people walk/jog calmly in Lalbagh.  Cycling can happen elsewhere. Maybe we should try to make cubbon park cycle-only just like lalbagh is walkers/joggers only!

There are quite a few boards inside Lalbagh stating quite clearly that
playing is not permitted in there.
I do remember seeing atleast one board that bars bicyclists inside
Lalbagh and quite rightly in my opinion.
Lalbagh is primarily a horticulture park and is not all that big.

Hi,

I agree that the behavior of those 'security' guys seem to be rude. But, let's not react to situations like this.

I remember that many BDA parks also don't allow cycling. The main reason being that cycling damages the pavements that were laid out for specially for walkers.

We need to understand the reason behind banning of cycling at such places. Attempting to use Critical Mass as tool to force to make them accept our demands will only degrade the value of Critical Mass.

People will start hating cyclists if we fail to understand this.

Cheers,
Jeevan

Well about not playing inside , yes they are present. But here's the
catch ...you see so many people playing on a regular basis, what
happens then?

Don't you naturally assume that its allowed. Make parallels with the
"no mobile while driving" scene, does anyone follow it , is anyone
fined for it?

And i disagree on lalbaugh being a small place , you could actually
get lost in there. I suggest you go explore the entire park.

Our laws doesn't allow stealing/killing etc, but still people do it. Does it mean we also do it? If there is a law and if we feel it is not correct then there are forums where we can raise it and get it corrected (not sure how effective these may be), but we wont resort to unlawful activities unless it is so critical that we are forced to do something like a civil disobedience movement. My feeling is "Cycling in Lalbagh" and "Playing badminton in Lalbagh" doesn't qualify for this..

No offense meant to anyone..just my personal view..lets chill and bike everywhere else

1) Bicycling is not allowed in Lalbagh. I go there with my 2 year old kid and let it run free. You can imagine what would go through my mind if a fellow cyclist is running amok.

There are boards around the place that tell you that playing , etc are not allowed. I think they are well hidden though.

2) The park is big, not very huge. It doesn't take more than 30 -45 mins to cover the entire park.

There are lot of people visiting, and lots of them trash the place around. If we want to contribute somethng useful, then we can go there and educate people on not trashing the page.

Lalbagh garden is spread across 240 acres of land.
(courtesy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lalbagh_Botanical_Gardens)

Cycling around to discover it will be so much fun.

I also visit with my kids and allow them to play in the grass and not on the road.

Cycling on the road inside should be allowed atleast.
Especially since they allow their Electric cars (Harini express) and other car, bikes (assuming its their staff driven) inside.

What harm can a cyclist cause to road and fellow park users?

Cubbon park allows cycling right? Its just 100 acres (courtesy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubbon_Park)

Why step motherly treatment to Lalbagh garden then?

Nalla.

There are two things here !
1> allowing cyclist will enable easy passage from jayanagar one end to another end in a safe passage. as a cyclist i will go inside lalbagh to reach minerva circle from ashoka pillar .
So later two wheelers might demand a road to reach faster.

Cycles will not be allowed as there might be demand for other vehicles later.

2>
pedestrians dont want anyone claiming their space.
So let there not be any conflict between the pedestrian and cyclist.

Lalbagh is one of the few places where pedestrians may feel confident
and comfortable walking around.
Its important that we preserve such spaces in our city. If bicycles
can be allowed in why not motorbikes? If speed is the criteria,
remember lots of bicyclists on this group routinely ride at and above
30kmph.
And I reiterate its primarily a horticulture park and in that sense
very different from Cubbon park or any other BDA park.

Guys, I run inside lalbagh on sat/sun. It is such a calm and lovely location for young and old to run/walk. The running is track is around 3kms. Please don't bike here.

BTW: have you noticed a 1 or 2 deg celsius drop in temp when you pass by lalbagh and cubbon park? Can you imagine how hot the city has become. What have we done to namma sundara bengalooru!

@Yogesh: seconded! It is a lot cooler near Cubbon Park that even just
1-2km away from it.

Hi,

I agree on this!

Cycling and walking dont go hand in hand and lalbagh is a walkers paradise and we should let it be!

Last Sunday I took my Son to ride in Bangalore university grounds with his new firefox bike, the guard over there adviced to use the roads instead of the tracks, though I agreed reluctantly ... later i felt it was a right suggestion made!

Thanks,
Sunil

Well...my two paise on this is...

On the roads, pedestrians, cyclists, motorized two-wheelers, motorists, bullock carts, buses, trucks...ALL jostle together and use the available space.... usually, the pedestrian is at the bottom of the traffic chain, closely followed by the cyclist..... but it's in parks like Lalbagh where the elderly--and people who are recovering from illness-- , and families with young children, often come to walk to be safe from traffic...so we should respect that!

I am feeling bad that constant absence from Bangalore is keeping me from cycling, and now I am missing the Critical Mass anniversary too. My thoughts are with all of you...more power to our wheels!

Cheers, Deepa.
