Am looking for a bike rack for my car. Any suggestions? Is anybody looking to sell a used one?
I went to the shop at Merida junction, just found one piece that cost about Rs 8000. Anybody in the group know where I can shop?

hi, I got one for self. It can hold 3 bikes at the back of the car (sedan or hatch back). following are details -

Google THULE + India + Bangalore  OR  contact Ramesh - who is THULE's dealer in Bangaore @ 9972021616.

I have used the same when self and a friend did Mysore -> Ooty --> Mysore . We drove down till Mysore with our bikes hanging back of my car. I'm pretty happy with the product.

Cool. What did it cost you ? I did try finding out and it seems the roof mounted ones work out to be much more expensive. Any reasons to go for one over the other (roof vs boot mounted)?
Rgds,
Sameer

Roof mounted racks are much more rigid, and typically a permanent one time installment that you don't have to keep putting on and removing.
It also alows access to the trunk whether you are carrying bikes or not.
Hatch ( rear mounted ) carrier tend to move around and often scratch the car, as they are held by straps which must be perfectly adjusted in each fitting. Also the bikes tend to bounce around, and often seem to make contact with each other. With most cars you often have the wheels of the bikes sticking out beyond the width of the car on eithr side, so in Indian Traffic I prefer the bikes safely tucked away on top, not worrying about them getting bumped from behind or hit from the side.

On the other hand, hatch racks are more handy if:
You want to use it on different cars,
Want to park with the bikes attached in a low ceiling parking.

There is plenty of info online about roof vs hatch mounted racks.
And amoungst roof racks, fork mounts vs clamp arm types.

Vivek

it cost me Rs 6600/-. I prefer boot mounted as room one require permanent installation of few component. Also, it's easy to install, takes aroun 5 o 10 mins only.

Typically, 2 load bars are mounted on the car, these are bars than run accross the car from left to right. Onto these the bike rails are fitted. Load bars are also used for surf boards, kayaks, roof mounted storage devices etc. Some carriers are also mounted on load bars,  like on Innovas.
I am sorry I can't send you any images from where I am right now.

Hi Sameer,

I've has a Thule roof mount that I bought from Ramesh in Bangalore. Has worked extremely well for 3 years. The reason I went for the roof mount :

1. My experience with the back of the car model ( not from Thule) on a hatchback was not good. The bikes kept sliding against each other and the whole thing was very flimsy. Was difficult to open door to access stuff with the bikes hanging from it.However the new ones from Thule might be much better engineered and might not have any of these issues.

2. Bikes seem safer up there away from tailgaters and curious onlookers.

3. The rack can also be used for roof storage boxes from Thule. This creates a lot of additional luggage space in a car  full of people

4. Bikes on the roof look cool !

Cheers,

Sridhar

When it comes to Rear Mount racks, you need to choose a good model very wisely. Especially the mechanism that racks provide to hold/bind the bikes. You don't want to scratch you car or bikes. Not all rear-mount racks have good binding options. So roof mount option may be a good/only solution if you can't manage to find a GOOD rear mount rack.

I have been using a rear mount rack for 3 years now, that fits on sedans as well as hatch-backs. It holds two bikes, and I have not had any issue until now. Not a single scratch on my cars or on my bikes. take 3-5 mins max to mount, and just 1 minute to unmount.

Though I prefer roof-mounts for the extra safety they provide, I cannot use them because my appartment basement and my office basement is too low to tow my bikes on the roof.

Rajat,

Is your car sedan or hatchback ? Does this carrier fit both ?

Thanks,
Pramod

Hatchback... does not fit a sedan. You will need the strap model for sedan.

While each type, roof/trunk mounted, have their advantages and
disadvantages, I did a fair amount of research and decided on trunk
mounting.

Primarily so that I could carry it with me and use on a rental car
when traveling.

http://www.saris.com/p-301-bones-rs.aspx

The Saris Bones RS is one of the best I found as it has the following
advantages over the regular ones:

1. Steel straps - impossible to cut and seem to me stronger than nylon
holding straps

2. Ratcheting system - makes putting on and taking off a 15 seconds
job. So when I reach my ride site, I take off the rack and put it in
the boot.

3. Very soft inner coating for the bike holding straps - less risk of
bike scratches

4. Anti-sway down tube holding strap - prevents bikes from moving

5. It has a lock - some small deterrent for a thief

I use bungee cords for securing the front wheel, and I never have the
bikes touching each other or moving around even at over 100kmph, and
it comfortably takes 3 road bikes.

Having said that - you better keep a close eye on your rear end while
driving as well as at traffic lights.

Edit - anti sway holds the seat tube.

I use a very similar design from BNB. Its good and at times really helps to carry three bikes 😄😄😄. And you can fit it on any car. What is the price of this particular model !

thank you & regards

Just wait for this month's CRANK magazine from ProCycle team. I heard that there is a review on different car racks. Read it and take a right decision. Good luck.
