I ride a rockrider 5.2 with the stock tires. I feel the need to buy a road bike for three reasons

1.Go faster
2.Lighter bike
3.Cheaper bike to park at office(don't laugh at me :p )

To achieve all the three objectives, the only two bikes available in India I can think of are,
1. Hero thunder racer
2. Fomas road king deluxe - sounds like a better buy of the two, will change to kenda tubes n tires if i buy this

My main questions are

1. whats the actual weight of the fomas?
2. Can someone recommend a good dealer in/around ulsoor or jayanagar or hebbal to buy the fomas from
3. Any reason why i would want to choose the hero over fomas?

A quick reply would help a lot since i'm thinking of buying it today afternoon.

Ps - I don't wanna buy the mach or hawk.

Regards,
Shankar

I dont think either will fit ur 'lighter' criterium. The gear ratios will probably help you go faster (provided u put the extra effort), else u'll have a heavier and slower bike. I havent weighed / lifted the fomas to say abt the weight, i'm merely judging by the fact that its a steel frame and costs little. Your rockrider is an aluminum frame

From what i heard fomas roadking deluxe is an aluminum frame. The non deluxe version is a steel frame. Sadly rr doesn't stock fomas or i'd have checked it out.. Any pointers where i can go check it out?

oh wow. dint know that. I guess pooviah has a fomas. U can probably test it out, and i know he definitely vouches for it

But make sure that the frame is the right size for you. Its even more important on roadbikes

I haven't tried the Fomas, but I did try the Thunder Racer and I didn't like it at all. This was when I was upgrading from Thunder MTB and looking at road/hybrid. Like you said, I also feel that by the looks of it, the Fomas is much better than the Racer. I have weighed the MTB and it was 15 kg with mudguards, stand, et al. Being basically the same frame, dont expect much difference in weight between Racer and MTB.

Two things which I know on Fomas are better is that it has double rim wheel and has larger size tyres than Racer. Racer tyres are smaller than normal roadbikes or even hybrids like Act 110+. Compared both of them side by side.

FOMAS RoadKing Delux is a Steel frame. It is 14.5kg. Wonderful bike. But the dealer is 'Bicycle Shoppe' (Prakash Shah) who has a change in attitude lately. He is trying to overprice stuff since he opened his new showroom there.

Prakash Shah's Mobile No:9886392878.The shop comes after Navrang on
the right side on Rajkumar road(if you are travelling from the
Yeshwantpur side).

I will apologize in advance for hijacking your thread.
[this is to fomas roadking owners]
1.Where do you get Kenda tubes and tires and how much do they cost?
2.Where do you get your cycles repaired/servied?[RR?]

Thank You

I heard from one dealer in marathhalli and also read online that there are two cheap fomas road bikes
1. fomas road king - steel frame
2. fomas road king DELUXE - aluminum

I'm assuming that the deluxe is an aluminum n atleast a couple of kilos lighter than my rockrider..
Can someone please confirm?

Then whats the difference between the roadking and the deluxe?

The delux has shimano drive train and shimano shifters
The other one has 'Xundah' drive train and down tube shifters.

There is a difference in the frame also.

I bought Kenda tires from Prakash Shah at 350/-

So the deluxe is a 14.5 kg steel bike with road tires.. I know its a difficult question to answer, but assuming i'm putting the same effort on same gradient, will it be faster than my rockrider on road for commuting?

I dont think u'll be faster on the fomas if u r doing same effort at same (upward) gradient. But it might let you put a higher effort and go faster due to the road-ish gear ratios.

14.5 kilos is a relatively light bike for steel frames. Your rockrider will only be a couplakilos lighter i guess.

Overall, for relaxed commutes, i guess i'd still chose the rockrider, from whatever datda is outn on this thread. Probably buy slicks for it

I did a pretty relaxed ride today to office and back on my rockrider. 21 km average.. The rockrider is around 13.5 kilos. Even if i ride a li'l harder on the fomas, i'l hardly end up with an increase in my speed by 10%. Might as well stick to my rockrider. Slicks are not an option because the beauty of the rockrider lies in the knobbies :)

i'l take a test ride of the fomas deluxe sometime next weekend.. If i like it i'l just buy it.. 8-9k is hardly anything compared to the vfm factor of the bike.. If not, i'l just save up and buy a trek/merida/giant road bike.

Shankar

Definitely faster than your rock rider.

@Pooviah,.You bought 700x32 tires then?What all tires(width) can i fit on
the double wheel?Because i am already seeing cracks on the stock.

21kmph in roadking delux is more than just relaxed. you can do upto 25kmph very easily inside bangalore.

Oh.. Then i'm just guilty of not buying it already.. If 25kmph is easily doable then i'l just buy it when i can, change tires n tubes to kenda (and bargain hard while at it).. Anythin else that needs to be swapped immediately on purchase?

Well, Pooviah is a pretty strong rider.... So take a test ride for yourself.

But, if you cant wait for the Meridas/treks.... trying and saving up for an LA Urbano might be an option too

I agree with Sudhir here on saving up for a good road bike.
If it is just for commute then I guess a hybrid will do all the
justice.

I will go for a road bike if I am training for races and or doing
longish road trips.
In city traffic you will hardly notice any significant difference in
average speed between MTB, road or Hybrid bikes.

Yeah but my basic idea was to buy a faster and cheaper bike to commute. Although i don't mind spending 50k on a good bike, it'll definitely hurt me if someone fiddles with such an awesome bike at my office parking.

I use BSA mach hybrid to commute to my office everyday (around 24 kms)
though i have Merdia 40V. The following bike cost around 4K and wort
spending the money on it.

The Mach is about 16 kilos, if I remember right, not much heavier than the Merida; the thinner tires must help too.

Yes, Mach is heavier when comparied to Merida. Riding comfort is more in
Merida hence you will be riding faster. As Pankaj suggested you will hardly
notice any significant difference in city traffic.

Harisha.

I guess the discussions about steel vs allow or weight is more academical. A good steel bike would never fail you. Its much cheaper than a good alloy or carbon bike, albeit a couple of kgs heavier. Unless you want to compete a steel bike would serve well.

I'll be out of town till 26th of this month... So in case you want to try FOMAS RoadKing then Sreepathi in IISc has one. Also Sreepathi is a bike wizard for us in IISc. So you could get valuable comments on all the bikes you are interested in. I have the delux which you can try anytime after I return to bangalore.

Yes... the steel vs alloy is actually not the right way of looking at it, cos there are different  steels, although funnily, the 'alloy' is usually similar. I have no clue about what steel fomas is made of.

Since there are so many variables.... the best option is to try it out and see if its worth the investment :)

Thanks sriram, i started this thread as i was looking for a bike which was cheaper, lighter and faster than my rockrider.. Appears i can pick two out of three only ;) I can settle for cheaper and faster but the basic reason i'm looking is rockrider is too expensive to be parked in the office. I agree i did sway towards buying a proper roadbike but that would defeat my original requirement as well.

And for the record, if someone steals my rockrider i WILL feel the pinch. Rather, i'll feel a punch.

So i guess i'l check out the fomas and see if its worth taking the plunge. Or if i feel it is shoddy then i'l stick to my 5.2.

Shankar

hi shankar,
i think the whole thread is kind of meandering away from the
essential points...
personally i think the fomas bikes are of pathetic quality, cannot be
compared to the merida/giant/treks etc....it will good if you could stick
with the 5.2 for now, save up and buy a good roadbike instead....i think
pooviah who has praised the fomas so much has never sat on a real roadbike
actually....frog's in the well scenario,no offence....guys are talking abt
21kmph vs 25kmph,whereas any seasoned roadbiker with some scientific
training can notch averages of 37-38kmph or above
coming to the options u have ---fomas is out,as the
gears, brakes, frame everything is very very shoddy, which will in effect
hinder you from touching speeds of any road bike at all..do remember that
the other roadbikes like treks/merida/etc although might cost close to
40-50k,will actually cost the manufacturers 90% of the cost you pay..so in
effect they too are value for money...;-) depends on the way u look at it.?
u could also wait for the btwin sport1 which would be the best vfm
option, when it arrives... hope this helps....also u mentioned u are scared
to take the 5.2 since its expensive et all,don bother then to buy a fomas
just for this reason..look at this way,i think by now u will have gotten the
value of 5.2 back ever since u bought it,even if it does get stolen, you
will not feel the pinch..??will you
Sriram

I have been observing this thread. Not sure how many of you here know about Pooviah. Wanted to point something out.

Take a stick, attach 2 wheels to it, fix one of the wheels to a chain and crank, and give this contraption to pooviah. He will do 35kpmh on that. In short, he is a pedaling machine. This kid has awesome potential and is sadly not part of any racing team in Bangalore. You hearing me Kynkyny, Spectrum, Red Rooster, etc? Pooviah's results correlate to Pooviah's strength and not with Bike's performance :-)

That would mean to me that even if i don't end up buying a similar bike, i'l get lots of inspiration to ride harder after meeting him :)
