Hi All Riders,

First and foremost, Although I call this a "Tour de Himalayas!! Practice Ride.", anyone can join in for the sake of fun and nature visit.!!

Here is my ride plan for the weekend 26th June.

5 AM - Start ride from Merida Junction.
7 AM - Have breakfast at Harohalli.
11/12 AM Reach Anchetti water fall and enjoy a one hour swim (if it seems safe in this rainy season after reaching there). Have lunch at the waterfall..
12:30 - Start back to Bangalore
7 pm - Reach back Bangalore after total ride distance of 200+ kms.

27th Sunday - Enjoy a happy rest day :)

Route Map

To make this a completely independent and self supported ride (coz thats how we are gonna ride the Himalayas), there won't be any support vehicle. Hence all participants will need to carry their own luggage. The best suggestion is to get a rear carrier for the cycle, so as to avoid back pain. Good cycle carriers are available with Decathlon. If possible go for Panniers too. (Let me know if you are planning to buy the panniers. They can be arranged pretty cheap,) Plus, carry the least possible luggage to reduce the burden.

Feel free to write to me or give me a buzz in case of doubt.

Rider list...

Hi all,

I am reposting an excellent map to Anchetti made by Georg last year.
I think it is the best route map I've seen to any place. Enjoy.

Hi All,

To make things (a bit) easier for folks who are living far off
from Bangalore south, I can offer stay at my home on Friday night. I
live in Mantri Tranquil around 5 Km up on Kanakapura road - 2 Km after
the Metro. That would make it easier to start on Saturday morning. Let
me know.

I am planning to join as well on my Cannondale Quick 5.

Hi Ramey,

Lets us start early. Even I stay at HAL which is abt 15 kms from merida jn. The timelines proposed are based on past ride experiences. Hence requesting all participants to kindly stick to the time.

Check with Shashi, he has expressed willingness to let some guys put up at his place for the night.

Tentatively am coming.. will confirm after my first nandi climb...
btw... I want to buy some accessories from Decatholon but sadly, after selecting stuff and dumping them at the cash counter, i was informed it is a must to have membership.
Any help? I need
1) Speedometer (Wireless)  Rs999 (Rs2000 outside)
2) Head and Tail light   Rs799 (approx. Rs1200 outside)
3) A nice t-shirt  Rs99

Hi jayanth
lot of us have Decatholon membership. In fact when you are at the
store you can ask any one buying some thing. They can bill your things
along with theirs. Or give me a call when u are going to decatholon.
my office is in koramangala. i can come and use my membership.

I might join this ride. If we are late from Anchetti, taking a bus from Denkanikottai is not a bad idea ( I have a deadline of 7:00 pm to meet , so I might end up doing this - depending on time available)

I would recommend continuing to Denkanikottai - Thali - Anekal and then on BG road. There are roads from all 3 places to Hosur. People closer to Sarjapur can take the Denkanikottai - Attibele - Sarjapur road route

Okay guys, had a chat with Vishnu today and we sort of came to the conclusion that some of the riders may not be adequately appraised of the nature  of the ride.

1st things 1st, the ride is immensely doable. If you have gone to Nandi, the stretch between Harohalli and Jigani, then you have already experienced uphills and downhills  so you should have a fair idea of what to expect. Keep in mind, though, that the scale of the uphills and downhills , both in terms of the numbers as well as the difficultly of each stretch is more than Nandi or Harohalli-Jigni. There will be a lot  of uphills and downhills in the ride, and I would advise the riders to be adequately prepared. This ride rivals the Muthathi ride very closely both in terms of difficulty as well as the scenic nature of the ride. The fun with Mutathi begins and ends at Sathanur IMHO wrt  the difficult and exhilirating parts of the ride.  The ride to Mutathi is almost totally downhill one way and uphiill when we return. There are certain key aspects of the Anchetti ride that I would like to emphasise a little (at the risk of sounding a little sermonizing)

1) Phase 1 : from home to Harohalli. Nice and easy , most people make it in about 1 hour 15mins or less. (~ 33 km)
2) Phase 2:  from here to Maralvadi , this would be around 10km or so. mostly flat though mild rolling terrain.(~ 10 km)
3) Phase 3 :  between Maralvadi to Hunsannahalli( ~45km)
4) Phase 4 :  between Hunsannahalli to Anchetti and further down to the bathing spot ( ~ 20 km)

5) Phase 5 : From the bathing spot to Denkanikottai ( ~ 16 km )
6) Phase 6 : Return to Bangalore  (either via Thali or Hosur)

About 5 km after Maralvadi (when you have already done 50 km+) is when the fun starts. The next 40 km is a combination of sheer uphills and crazy downhills. If you are tired, then you can always walk up the uphills but it is the during the downhills that you get a sense of how it feels to be like Superman (or Superwoman) Unfortunately last year a guy and a girl fractured their limbs when they lost control during a downhill.

Another non-trivial information is that in this stretch, cell coverage is low to non-existent. This part is when we go through the Thali elephant corridor , and is mostly forest, pockmarked by a few small villages. Add to that the fact that we are not going with any support vehicle, I leave you guys to imagine the possibilities. The cautionary element that I would like to emphasize is that ride as buddies , at least 2 if not 3 in a group. There are no cycle repair shops, and no availabilty of coconut water (never saw a vendor) in this area. You will get some bananas and Frooti, etc in some of the villages.

You will need to stock yourself with hydrating drinks (in a pannier/cycle rack)  to be able to do this distance without burning yourself out. There will hardly be any traffic in this area.  From Hunsanahalli to Anchetti (bathing point) is mostly uphill. There is a  hair pin bend 500 meters before  the bathing spot. If you are tired at this point , your best bet is to catch a bus from Anchetti to Hosur and another from there to Bangalore.I need to be home by 6:30 pm so I might end up catching a bus from Denkanikottai or Hosur.

Happy riding.

Loved your writeup Chiddu!! Really nice.

What has truly been emphasized by Chiddu is that "One way to Anchetti can be completed by most, dead or alive!!" But return if anyone wants to come along with me, is gonna be dead difficult and super challenging. For some riders who live far off from the start point, its gonna be upto 230 km+ ride.

Also in previous rides, by experience, and as mentioned by chiddu, If you have carriers, you can end up with much lesser back ache than without them and end up pushing another 30-50 kms easily.

This ride is mostly for the experienced lot. Newbees are advised to join the Sunday 80+ km ride around Harohalli, Jigani headed by chiddu.

Cheers!!!!

Chidu,
Awesome report - Where is the like button in gmail, when we need one :)

About Harohalli-Jigani, i have done it thrice... I guess Chidu has already explained the ride with good detail.
One point is, there is a village called  "Uruganadoddi", which is 8 kms from Jigani... from here a 3.5 kms climb is quite challenging.
After the climb, there isnt a place where you can get water/Tea etc for quite a distance. there is a small shop before the climb, you may check if there is something of your interest there.

Even now, i feel Harohalli-Jigani stretch of 27 kms as quite challenging.

Guys this will be the longest ride I have ever done, are the others in the same bracket? whats the average speed you guys are targeting, I am kinda slow rider and can average speeds of only 25 kmph, inclines would further kill that speed down to 20.

Hi Shobhit and all,

Kindly get your MTBs, The roads are expected to be bad at certain locations for Road Bikes (I do not have any latest update on the road condition). Average riding pace is expected to be lower than 20 (excluding short breaks and breakfast breaks).

Anyways, does anyone have the phone no of the guy at the breakfast point at harohalli? His idlis are the best I have ever had in Bang and also provides gr8 hospitality. We may need to give him a heads up reg our early arrival in case we plan to have a early breakfast.

And please carry enough nourishment, bananas etc to keep your tummy full.

Cheers!!!!

Hi Shobit,

with 25kmph as avg you can't quote yourself as slow rider...,

if you are able to 20 on the up hill, you can easily wash out others
and onself on the ride...,

you will be the leader in the ride..,

the crux is to maintain the same energy level through oout the
day(ofcourse you can take n number of short breaks)

I think Jayaram's opens at 6:45 or around the time we reach harohalli.
I've reached Jayaram's at 7am and found myself waiting to be served.

I plan to pick up bananas and extra water after our breakfast at
Harohalli - no point lugging it from Bangalore.

Best,
VIshnu

Buddies,
I will like to recommend Gatorade sachets, i used it at BBCh5 yday and
its more refreshing than Electrals. 15/- makes half liter. I got one
free with GluconD Isotonik sachet pack at Nilgiris. Need to hunt for
it, hopefully it should be available at Nilgiris itself.
Have fun and safe ride,

Anchetty riders, Here are a few take aways from the last month end long ride on this route:

1. Go really slow on the downhills after you cross Hunsahalli. Two of our riders, Neera and Piyush suffered compound fractures after nasty falls. They had to be rushed to Bangalore for emergency casts at Wockhardt. Stanzin and Anke, I remember you guys every time I think of our last ride to Anchetty. Once more thanks for being our angels that day! So, please do not get carried away by the downhills and ride safe. Please, someone carry some first-aid including pain-killers.

2. Make sure you carry water. Unlike many of our rides that head in the direction of Devanahalli and Kanakapura, there are no shops selling water for long distances on this route. So, make sure you refill water whenever possible.

3. MIND the time. The water is too inviting and but don't spend a lot of time swimming. If you do that, you will not reach home before dark. Bannerghatta road is not lit. Hosur road is lit but has lot of traffic, so be really very mindful of time.

4. There are some serious uphills after the swimming point. You will need to conserve energy to climb that uphill.

5. Do NOT trivialize the distance. This is a VERY long ride going through some really challenging terrain. You can get vehicles to transport you to Bangalore at Anchetty, Denkanikottai and Thali. If you do decide to use transport, it will be cheaper to get more people to pool in and ride together. Cost is approx. Rs1,500 for a carrier van that can transport 6 bicycles (8 with lot of difficulty).

Stay safe guys. The last time we attempted this Anchetty route, very few completed the whole thing. Most notably, strong riders like Georg, Vivek, Ravi Ranjan, and Hiddish being some of them.

Good luck and have a nice time,
I would have definitely come if I was not out of town this coming weekend,
Yogesh.

If you can maintain a speed of 25kmph in this ride, you have earned the right to call yourself superman.

Since we are leaving early,if we don't find Jayaram's or Vasu's ready to serve when we get there, we can move on to Maralvadi and eat our breakfast there. That might be a better idea.

Looks like junta have an idea what to expect. It should be fun then.

I suppose, if we can skip Jayaram and have the breakfast after some time in any other nice place, it would be good too!! We can finalize that on the last day as well.

Maralvadi it has to be.

If we pass Maralvadi, the next decent stop is Hunsannahalli , and you need some carbs before the start of the fun part

Hi Riders,

Seems like i lost count of participants for the ride!!

This is an update mail to let you all know that ride is as per the original plan and schedule. We will be leaving from Merida Junction sharp at 5am on saturday. We will have breakfast and lunch on the way where ever possible.

Note :- Bikers with less than 14 speeds can participate at their own risk and time plan. :-) Those who have never tried a 100km+ ride till date are requested to stay away from this mammoth ride!!

Here is the ride plan for the weekend 26th June attached once again.

5 AM - Start ride from Merida Junction. (Please be present before time at the location)
7 AM - Have breakfast on the way.

11/12 AM Reach Anchetti water fall and enjoy a one hour swim (if it seems safe in this rainy season after reaching there). Have lunch at the waterfall..
12:30 - Start back to Bangalore
7 pm - Reach back Bangalore after total ride distance of 200+ kms!!!

Route Map

To make this a completely independent and self supported ride (coz thats how we are gonna ride the Himalayas), there won't be any support vehicle. Hence all participants will need to carry their own luggage. (The best suggestion is to get a rear carrier for the cycle, so as to avoid back pain.)

Moreover, Since Kanakpura road is notorious for flat tyres, all participants are requested to carry a spare tube at least.

Rider List: -
Not attached. Kindly send a mail with your name and phone no if you are interested to join. Please (and again a repeated request) be in time at the Merida Junction.

Cheers!!!!

Looks like we are on for tomorrow's (Saturday) ride to Anchetti.

It is important to time the ride back from Anchetti, so we can make it
back in Bangalore sooner than later. It is very easy to lose track of
time when you are in the water (a lot of us have been there ;-)

Assuming we get to Anchetti around 12noon, I don't plan on spending
more then 30 -45 (max) minutes at Anchetti before heading back home
via D'kottai - Thali - Anekal - Jigani - B'ghatta - B'lore. This may
get me back home around 7pm.

Look forward to riding with all of you tomorrow.

Best,
VIshnu

Hi Folks
I was out to the US for the last few weeks. Great to see the Manali -
Khardungla attempt being made by Life on Pedals. It is an excellent
beautiful route once past Rohtang which is challenging as by the time
you cross it you are not yet fully acclimatized. After that the body
would have adapted.
Do let me know in case you need any administrative support enroute,
Regards
