I have been visiting Kamshet,Pune for past 3 years for Paragliding but
never had an opportunity to visit Mumbai. During my previous visits I
always traveled by train from Pune to Kamshet. This year I cycled from
Pune to Kamshet and then from Kamshet to Mumbai a week later. On the
way I met a small group who were cycling Pune-Lonavala-Pune. Some
carried the cycles on their 4 wheeler(probably to Lonavala).

The road I followed was NH4(Two wheelers are not allowed on
expressway). The roads are good and traffic was moderate even on
weekend. The route is mostly flat except Lonavala-Khopoli which is a
downhill of around 15-20Kms.

DAY1: Pune-Kamshet-Uksan village
Distance: 58kms
Ride Time: 7:00AM-11AM

DAY2: Uksan-Kamshet-Mumbai(Vile Parle)
Distance: 135Kms
Ride Time : 10:00AM-6:30PM

I carried the bicycle by KSRTC VOLVO from Bengaluru-Pune and Mumbai-
Bengaluru. Cargo charges were around Rs.110 each way.

I hit Bombay outskirts about 45-50 Kms away from my final
destination(Vile Parle). This was mentally tiring part of the ride;
asking for the directions and riding through high speed traffic. A
week stay in Mumbai and train journey will remain memorable. I
realized Mumbai is because of its people.

Thats why its called "Aamchi mumbai" [Marathi to Eng translation - Our Mumbai]

It was quite a tough task to adapt myself from mumbai lifestyle when i relocated to bangalore in the year 2000.
Bangalore was indeed Pensioners paradise that time. Weather was awesome.. use to rain anytime of the day and any month.. when it use to get slightly hot. Folks use to carry umbrella throughout the year. Traffic was hardly a problem comparing to now. I use to love walking in MG road on the elevated footpath near the parkside. Things changed pretty fast though. :(
And now i am feeling nostalgic about Mumbai and also good old bangalore days :(

Tough to adapt from Mumbai lifestyle? Why, you need to be pushed into and pushed out of trains?

LOL,
Chiddu, if you know the trick it's nothing. Just stand in the front when the train comes and you magically find yourself inside the train, ditto when your station arrives and you want to alight :)

It was a drastic shift between mumbai's fast paced life and bangalore life. As bachelors it was more tough, we survived on maggi many times because everything use to close before 8pm.
Obviously, we all start loving this soon :)

My father in law still runs when he alights from train upon reaching bangalore and we burst into laughter while trying to catch up with him.

Sorry mods, enough of OT from me.

OT!!!!

Chiddu,

Travelling through the local trains during peak load itself is an art.
The stories to hear/those bad mouthing while hanging on the doors is
something that i miss a lot. Not to mention the all time fav Vada-Pav!

The only bad thing about Mumbai is that people become old without realizing how time flew by. Not a place where you could savour life.

Hey Deepu,

Thanks for posting!  Am from Mumbai too; left Mumbai in 1999. While I prefer the day to day stuff like commute, weather etc. of Bangalore, l still miss (amchi!) Mumbai -- the general level of professionalism in all walks there, is in a class of it's own.  As they say, NY:US::Mumbai:India. :)  Maximum City!

I do yearn to bicycle in Mumbai; considering doing something this year.  I suppose I'll include the Mumbai-Pune route too in that.
