Hi,

I have started cycling after a break of 17 years and I have narrowed my choice to either a Rockrider 5.3 or a Trek 3700. The intended usage is going to be mild trails and kerb commute.

On comparing both I found that the 5.3 has amazing specs to offer viz-a-viz  the 3700. For some  reason my observation is that the 3700 demands a higher preference from people over the 5.3. I want to know if this is only my perception or is it actually correct. I think they are both great machines. Where the 5.3 scores is the components and the 3700 scores in the frame design and brand.

Now to conclude on which bike to buy, I want to hear from this community on their views, reviews, the good, the bad and the ugly on both these bikes. Will take the final plunge after this thread dies.

Cheers,

Nikhilesh Grover

Hi Nikhilesh,

I was in a very similar position a while back and through a month of research and talking to folks here, I realized this simple fact:
One should invest in a good frame, something which can last you a few years and can grow with you, as you grow in your skills and demand more and more from your bike! Components on 3700 are very decent to begin with and one tends to keep upgrading them as and when the need is felt. Upgrading the frame on the other hand is relatively tougher - lusting for a new bike for months, selling off ur old bike and then buying a new one and hope that this one is going to last u a while.. ;)

So I would strongly recommend the 3700 over 5.3, with no offence to 5.3 owners! :) It's just a view point..

Hope this helps..

Only to find out after 5 months that you should have bought a road
bike ;)
(From my experience and few others I know).

I think that frames from different brands can not be very different
when it comes to durability.
If you are getting better components for around the same price then I
would go for the RR 5.3 over Trek 3700.
With the current scarcity of spares/components/technicians in India I
guess upgrading to better components will be more painful than selling
off your old bike and buy a new one.

My opinion.

A thread on 4300 vs 5.3 - http://bikeszone.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2348
and folks seem to recommend 5.3...

I guess existing RR owners can chip in here... it's just that I always find a number of RR 5.2 & 5.3 owners going for a new bike... makes one think!
