Hello Everyone,

You may be aware that www.tapprs.com is into travel & photography rentals. (If not, I am happy that you are aware now. Moderators, please excuse ;-) ).

As of today, there are limited rental options for bikes and we thought we should address that. We love Ravi for doing something in that regard already!

However, we would love to understand the market better.

We know that most of the readers here own bikes themselves and hence, may not rent a bike at all. However, your friends who don't own one may be interested. And in the past, you may have attempted renting bikes for them.

And you may be interested in renting out stuff like panniers, bike racks and stuff like GoPro helmet cameras to record your offroad adventures.

Cutting it short, 2 questions we have.

1. Have you in the past attempted renting something (for you or for a friend)? If yes, what pain points would you like to see us address?
2.
What would you like to see us add to our inventory?

We do have a lot of other questions. But we will figure that out by other ways. ;-).

We would love to keep this discussion public so that other renters could use the info too. However, if you want to keep it private, please do email me directly.

Thank you,
Prem for www.tapprs.com

I've never rented on my own but seen folks struggling with rented bikes during the recent CAM ride! It almost appeared like the bikes were not checked for the condition before renting out! Most of them had issues with brakes, chain, etc as far as I cold see!

Hi Vivek,

I think Google Groups formatting adds a prefix to the links. Could you
please try again? http://tapprs.com

I checked the server details and things look good, even at the time
you sent the mail.

Hi Kishan,

Thank you for the reply.

True, quality is a must have to enhance the ride experience. Bad bikes
are a serious put off.

However, that said, I think the C2C rides were tough on not just the
rented bikes, but also the rider owned bikes. I heard even they had
issues with brakes and stuff.

Very valid point though and I am sure it helps a few of us venturing
into the space. Thanks.

cheers,
Prem

Hi Prem,
Welcome to biking business. We also rent out Brand new Merida Bikes in the name Happy Strides .

Things i observed from last 8 months by bike renting and organizing bike trips

80% of the people who take bikes on rent or less experienced with geared bikes. When i first brought a bike for my self it took one week to adjust to riding and to change the gears.

We can't expect the rented bikes are used as smoothly as we use our own bikes.

In wet weather V Brakes performance is not good. when I organized a trip in Western Ghats of Sakelshpur in this rainy season each day ride of 40 kms took one set of brakes. We charge Rs.350/- as rent per day. Brakes itself took Rs.175/-.  CAM group got better experience in this issue.

Each time when bikes come's from rent i wash the bikes, check the brakes, tune shifters, oil chains and cables, Market rate for doing this is Rs.500/- to Rs.800/-

Warm Regards

Harsha

Thanks Harish.

I have been renting photography and travel items for a few months
now.

I kinda concur with your opinion reg bicycle rentals.

Esp the monsoon rides are labour intensive for renters and I've been
charging separately for brakes, soiled returns (beyond an accepted
limit). I even had a rim scraped a bit after a ride in heavy slush and
rain.. the brakes didnt last 150 kms and the metal on the shoe scraped
the rim. However, I guess once the monsoon is done with, handling it
should be much easier.

Unlike most who also have a tour operation along with rentals, Tapprs
is mostly pure play rental (at least for now) and hence, I have to
price 'in' everything thing foreseeable, plus a slight premium for
relevant risk taken. At the current rates, I do not see myself scaling
up much on bike rentals for now beyond a few bikes.. esp as long as
its stand alone rental. However, it would be interesting to work out a
model that works for all of us.. customers and vendors.

cheers,
Prem

Amazed that brakes get worn so fast. Is it because of off roading? My
Canti brae pads are now 6000km and going strong, and I had done more
than 12000km [I think] when I sold my road bike, and brakes were fine.
Is it off roading, or what that eats up pads?

Hi Deepak,
Wow.. thats awesome stats.

Its mainly due to ride in rain. The wet rims makes braking harder and wears out the pads.
My stock Trek 4300 MTB brakepads also worn out during last rainy season, upgraded it at Decathlon and its still going on. Lets see how it works out during this rainy season.. so far so good.

Thanks Nalla. You just got me to check my log, and I have just crossed
the quarter lakh mark [25,131.4 km], 750,000 feet of climbing, not
changed any brake pads yet [have changed bikes though], and yet suck
at cycling especially climbing.

Thanks guys. Forgot to add, thats without commute miles. I dont track
that, but then my commute is about 150-175km per month, and I dont
really commute by bike in the rains, and nor did I when the Metro work
was at its worst.

Back to the original question though - wonder why brake pads wear out
in a day? Really was shocked to read that.

Impressive numbers. Yes the pads get worn out during rains. Otherwise
they are fine. Ride continously in the rain (here it means breaking
every corner), and they go poof.

How many of these pads were from Decathlon? I bought the cheap V-brake
pads for Rs. 99 and used them for one trip with CAM and they are about
halfway down already. Not worth it I think. I was testing them this
time, but I'll put my Tektro pads that came with the Trek back on when
these are done.

Kool Stop salmon coloured are designed for wet, and have worked
fantastic for me. Good quality, and cheaper than Swiss Stops which are
really expensive.

I have to check out better brake shoes.

The original ones on the Trek 4300 lasted 3000km including a TFN ride,
few Kalhatty descents, riding in heavy rain in Nilgiris and Malnad
areas, etc. Once I changed to the Decathlon ones, been changing them
every month during the monsoon.

Thanks Doc. Will try to get the Kool Stop salmon.

Prem

Bought sometime last year and still going well. It was recommended by Sanjay there and was the costliest one available there that time.

Yup. Almost everymonth (mind you, been renting it in the last 3 months).

I had been using the 99Rs ones and not really good in rain. Will try the ones you mentioned and see how they go.

Btw Doc, where do you get these Kool Stop salmon (in Bangalore if possible)?

Got them online but I did get a mail from the manager in US asking if
anyone wanted to be their dealer in India. If Rohan/Venky are
interested, I can get them in contact.

Thank you for the note, if you have any local bicycle busninesses that
you know of or buy from please give them my contact email as we would
like to find a distributor in your country.
