After this and that....

After the accident I decided to buy a good steel bike + good components (after Sree's comment), but during that time there were no steel frame bicycles available locally.  Got impatient and bought  MTB.  Thought I will get used to that but never enjoyed my commute even though I did around 7000kms of commute and 0kms of trail ride.  I really longed for 700C wheels.

Was excited to see Surly coming to India but my excitement fizzled out looking at the prize. Spoke to Praveen too if he can build a steel frame, but the prize was going over the roof. (frame+components)
Came to know that fomas is bringing fuji to India and dropped them a mail if they can get me a fuji touring and in  a day confirmed that they can get and the prize will be 57k and approx 2 months wait time.

Now its 2 weeks and > 500kms done I am really enjoying my commute of 50kms.  I have fixed sks fenders P45 chromoplastic.(Fuji Touring can accommodate P50)  I am yet to fine tune the spacing between tire and fenders

Thanks to Dr. Rao for the inputs and the vibrant forum which gives an opportunity in selecting the bikes / spares etc.

I still have a niggling problem with shifters,  hopefully it will be ironed out this weekend.  I could see the indentation on the side of the box, was worried if their is any damage on the frame, but looks like it is not , but probably the derailer  might have bent (and I am charged by Procycle for the straightening out :-(  . I thought bike assembly charges covers all aspects.

Bike : Fuji Touring : 2013 : 56cm
Dealer / Distributor : Cyclocraft.in, Mumbai. Contact Person : Manoj
Bike assembled at : Procycle.in (first time I am availing the service)
Bike test rode before purchase: Kona Sutra 2009 56cm at Pedals and wheels 2 years back.( I backed out of this due to disc brake cable routing) :

If the derailleur was bent in shipping, your dealer should replace it.

Otherwise very nice bike. It's apparently built for loaded touring. So
definitely go touring!

I would've suggested the SKS Longboards for mudguards, but the P45s
are okay too. The Longboards are longer.

You should consider a front rack. That bike seems to be able to handle it.

You need to show pics of the drive side! Also, how much does it weigh
in this configuration?

I am not sure if derailleur has bent, that's an assumption.

I have my eye on surly front rack + ortileb bags, will buy when I plan to tour.

I have not weighed, will do sometime and post it. Feels like it is lighter than my MTB.

Nice bike. Wishing you many happy tours.

I really like touring bikes. Maybe because they just remind me of vacations and touring.

Nice bike Kiran -- congrats!  Wishing you many good tours!

Looking at http://www.fujibikes.com/bike/details/touring -- the list price is $999.  Getting it in India for Rs57K, even at the $-Rs conversion rate of few months back, seems to be a real good deal.  With 40+% duty, am wondering how they managed that price. :)  Did they essentially give you a price lower than the list price?  Or is there some other trick?  It would be good to know how they manage this.

This makes steel touring bikes a good option while considering a serious purchase -- compared to some of the hybrid bikes in the Rs45K-50K range.  If I had this option an year or so back, I think I too would have gone for it.

Another thing -- RR Cycles Madiwala now carries Fuji bikes.  Wondering -- had you checked with them if they could get you this bike (and at what price)?

thanks,  -{db}.

Thanks Deepak and Db,

I didn't check with RR.

Db, There is no trick and I didn't get lower than list price. We pay 40% for the value we bought at isn't it ?

USD 450 - Distributor price
USD 180 - 40% duty
USD 100 - shipping charges. Total comes to $730.

I am not sure what the actual distributor price,  When I ordered some stores were giving USD 150 discount on $999 bike.

cheers

Sree,  The bicycle weighs 14.4kgs (with sks p45 fenders and al bottle cage)

Initially thought of longboard, but was afraid if debris get caught in the front fender, ya could have taken out the plastic mudflap
now I can put custom made leather mudflap too isn't it ?

Sometimes learning is quite expensive :-)

That is a good weight for a bike that can do fully-loaded touring. I
went through quite some reviews after you bought it, and it seems to
be a very nice bike, one of the better ones in a niche category. Not
too expensive too, compared to its competition.

> now I can put custom made leather mudflap too isn't it ?

I think so, but you'll have to drill the fenders. The advantage of the
longboards is that they prevent your chain / frame (near the BB) from
picking up muck. Your feet also remain drier during rain since the
water from the tires doesn't come up to the feet.. With my P35s that's
the only complaint that I have. Unfortunately, longboards won't fit my
bike.

Yes, learning is always expensive: time or money-wise. So best do it
early so you can amortize over the rest of time ;)

Very Very expensive, my 30k went in the drain with my first 2 (big) bicycle purchase :-)

Hi Kiran,

Ya, so I see from your cost breakup that it's the distributor price ($450) that is being used, not the list price ($999).    I heard from another person (non-Bangalorean) too that they picked up this bike for somewhere in the Rs50K-60K range.  Really good deals.

Distributor price of $450, vs list price of $999 is a huge difference.  Not sure how bikes like Surly or Trek520 are priced/sold, but from the Rs quotes, looked like it was basically the US $ list price that was the basis.

thanks,  -{db}.

Da Lam. You had the hero hawk and sold it. Now you also have another from team mate Nishita. You want one more? I actually would want to buy the hero hawk if the handle bar was well designed to access the brake properly.
