It was an awesome ride. Perfect weather, awesome arrangements and such an enthusiastic crowd.

And yeah the second accident was mine. Was pretty bad, i lost consciousness and i hurt all my limbs, broke a tooth and my mouth has so many bruises! But, i climbed before i fell :). Only two regrets though

1. I broke a tooth n look even more ugly than i was before :p
2. I missed going to corner house after the ride :p

abhi, mr and mrs anand.. Did u guys go to corner house?

There were so many ppl who helped me so much to get me back on my feet. Will soon write a big thank u mail. Least i can do! I love bangalore and i love bbch!

Hi,

First of all a Big Thank U to Yogesh, Brig.Vijay, Traffic Commr and
loads of others who have made this ride enjoyable and comfortable.
Last but not the least my friend Venkat who had faith in me to climb
Nandi and yeah Nandi Conquered me and i did not conquer Nandi for the
sheer picturesque landscape:-) Did not notice this minutely when i
have vroomed my swift up!!! Yes truly amazing to climb up for the
first time. I have done this for stat sake, 59 minutes from Nandi base
to the Breakfast top. Unfortunately my friend Venkat had an accident
as well near KR Puram. Accident would have been a major one but
luckily escaped with few scratches and bruises... Motorist hit his
rear wheel. He is safe and sound now...

The enthusiastic smile and waving hands gave me the urge to climb it
to top. Yes i have done this. For sure timing will improve. But for
the first timer i am more happy to see more enthusiastic riders. This
time had a 80km ride from CCD due to fever... But next time it would
be a century + ride and will also make one of my friends who have not
climbed today to reach the nandi top next time. Surely i had a great
time. Happy to see you all folks... Carry the enthusiasm.... I would
sum up Nandi ride in two sentences!!!!

Challenging UPHILL and Complex DOWNHILL
Keep it up folks and meet u in next ride....

Thanks a lot to Yogesh to pull off yet another successful mass ride :)
Dude, i know how modest you are and you will not agree to what i say.. but you are our Leader man.. we need folks like you to show us the path.

Thanks a lot to Brig VIjay and his fellow army folks, boy what a sight it is to see how well they organise and execute their plans. Glad we have such good folks in defense.. our Motherland is in safe hand :)

Shankar dude, get well soon man, attend to the injuries today itself, tomorrow it will hurt more. Hope the crash was not due to your lack of sleep last month :)
All the folks with injuries, please attend to it soon and recover fast to get back on saddle.

Ok, here comes my bragging part. What a fantastic way to begin the month. First long ride for me.. my prev was 101 kms on my Trek 4300, i did 135 kms today on my bTwin Sport1 roadbike.
After crossing airport, Samim, Sriram and Vivek (Mr. 69) zoomed past me, Sameer and Hiren. I didnt have enough of them and wanted to see Samim in action.. i took off and managed to catch them shortly.. Luckily for me they were not zooming too hard.. i announced coming through on your right and almost scared Mr. 69.. went past Sriram and Samim soon and had mini celebration for overtaking the three great riders :) That was my moment of glory right there.
Realised i didnt shoot them on my mobile cam and by the time i took it out they were bit ahead, took some pics from back, couldnt overtake them to take front pics :(

Tamed the bull for the first time on my bike, took ~45 min with 3 short breaks to climb from down till 1st arch.. met Deepak (RACF), George Joseph, my cisco buddy Johan and started for descent soon after that.. Cursing myself for not going upto the bungalow :(

What a perfect sunday spent.. met lot of bikers.. else its usually the 3rd sunday of the month when i meet my pals during BBCH.

Rgds,
Nalla.
p.s. oops almost forgot, Happy friendship day to you all :)

Shankar, all through the ride (until your accident), I kept laughing thinking about your comment about carrying oil (lube) for your chain on your next ride over spare tubes and pump.

The motorcyclist who dropped you down escaped today. In fact, I have an extremely strong suspicion it was the same guys who we saw and who brought one of our bicyclists down. I in fact even confronted that group, but they refused. It would be difficult to take any action without any proof or any number plate. Had I been sure, I would have used my cycle pump and gouged his eye-balls or at least slapped him a couple of times, I have done it before and won't hesitate to do it again. I swear it. Motorbikers have always been the biggest enemy for peaceful existence in Bangalore - most chain-snatchers, rowdies, rapists, drug-addicts, ass-holes, and pea-brained idiots make up for a small d#ck by buying a motorbike and riding it rashly.

If it helps any we informed the cops who were checking people at the 4th km point about the accident and the vague description about Karizma.

On my way back, I kept thinking about the lovely close-mouthed smile you flashed as you left in the Army medic's jeep today. Please keep that playful spirit and I hope you feel better soon bro. Please do not stop bicycling. That would be a huge travesty. It would be equivalent to an eve-teased girl refusing to ever go outside.

As for the motorbiker, I wish him the same fate that Ananth Nag faces in the last scene of the age-old classic Kannada movie "Accident". May he rot in hell,
Yogesh.

Yogesh,

Does anyone have a description of the bike, biker, their helmet?  We should go back every Saturday and catch this guy and see if he has any scratches on his bike.

What is the threshold to get the police involved? Also is there park police or officers that take care of issues like this?

Shankar, I hope your feeling better soon.

No one got the description of the bike. Poor shankar was hit so suddenly and abruptly that he does not recollect anything.

Nandi has a rabid problem with youngsters getting drunk and being a pain to everyone. People park their bikes along the road, find a nice view point on top of rocks, get drunk, scream, shout, and disturb peace. If that was not enough, they ride like idiots (that includes guys who do not drink too). Even the monkeys (I mean the animals) on Nandi are far well behaved (I apologize to the monkey community on Nandi for insulting them by comparing them to motorbikers)

Sorry to hear about these accidents, i am not sure how this particular accident happened. I assume the motor-biker was climbing uphill on the wrong side.
Lesson learnt from here according to me (I am not taking side of the motor-biker) but vehicles climbing uphill have the right of way and during steep hairpin-bend curves the vehicles do take longer turns which means getting on wrong side during left curve.
So we have to be extra careful during descending.. irrespective of whether we are riding a bike or driving a motorised vehicle.
Also motorized vehicles mostly give a warning short horn to indicate their ascend.
Rgds,
Nalla.

well. today while i was descending, some mobiker took the inner line on the wrong side! That is totally stupid and unacceptable. But since i am an overcautious rider, a potential close shave turned into a non-incident.

You ditchers!! Could have atleast smsed me. I'd have come for ice cream no matter what!

I'll be careful dude. Remember I told you to go around the circle near nandi and keep left? (or was it someone else?) It is speed that matters but not at the cost of safety. What concerns me is that you had ice cream without me. How can you do this to me?

No Regards, :P

George, love the spirit of going back every saturday! :) Thank you so much. I do not wish to catch the guy and give him a beating but I sure as hell hope he learns to atleast wear a helmet next time he rides anywhere.

Yogesh, I really dont recollect anything after I was hit! I think the motorbiker was drunk. I just hope he has not hit anyone else. Else, I wish that he rot in hell than put all of us and himself in danger.

I will oil my chain before my next ride and carry some oil on every ride. And how did you even think I'm gonna stop riding? No way!!! I plan to dedicate one week of august by riding the whole week and letting my car be at home and chill.

And yeah, I've been told that my broken tooth smile makes me look like a kid. Whether to take it as a compliment or not is a huge dilemma for me :P

I fell, no big deal. I enjoyed - HUGE deal! :)

C u back in bangalore on a ride soon!

I saw a motorbiker and a pillion rider almost getting run over by a KSRTC bus 2 months back. The guy was approaching a hair-pin bend on the right hand side (wrong side) of the road as a KSRTC bus was coming down from the other side of the hair-pin bend (this is the curve where it is really steep on one side). There was no way the bus driver could have seen the motorcyclist as he approached the curve. I was super-impressed by the way the KSRTC bus driver used his presence of mind, applied brakes and brought the bus to a complete stop. You know what's unbelievable? The motor-bike's engine shut down and started rolling backwards. This motorbiker had a teenage girl riding pillion. The girl was so shaken up after the near-miss incident that she put her feet on the silencer. Believe it or not, I was able to catch up with them and get the motorcyclist-guy to stop his bike and have the girl take her leg off the silencer. Call it inexperience, arrogance, idiocy, madness, or whatever. These guys have no business holding a license to ride.

In all seriousness, can't we lodge a complaint with the police? Will they do nothing? Has anybody tired? If so what do they say?

We need to launch an effort to ban motorbikes from NHs!

How many minor accidents and near misses have to happen before the police do something?  Do they need a serious injury first (or worse)?

I personally saw a one motorcycle over taking a second one, which itself was overtaking a car driving at normal speeds.  Theres not enough width to be doing crazy s&*t like that.  Never mind the blind turns and slick roads that these guys think they are driving like racers on.

No George. This is one place where I actually appreciate the pain that our law enforcement goes through. We did not get the registration number of the motorcyclist. There were about 5 Karizmas on top of the hill. So, no way we could point fingers at anyone. We complained to the cops at the 4th km point (just as the hair-pin bends end) yesterday. The inspector said the chances of catching the culprit was remote because the description was too vague.

Like I said in an earlier email. There are too many accidents in Bangalore every day that go totally unreported because there are no fatalities (what you read in page 3 is just the fatalities recorded in the police roster). It is just a case of far few police-people to keep watch over a very large population of this country. We have an excellent common law system (common law is observed in the US, UK, and other developed nations), but a very over-worked and under-paid legal and law-enforcement system. Sad!

Lodging a complaint with the police saying it was a 'black karizma' will take it nowhere.

And the ban on two wheelers beyond the second arch, is most likely due to incidents caused by such reckless riders.

The motorcyclist was totally knocked off...he kept screaming that he is going to faint...i saw the same group after our lunch near the idly point. Looks like he got some first aid at the hospital at the base of nandi and they have asked him to go to a bigger / better hospital in devanahalli.

And shankar, get well soon dude...Shankar was the one  who repaired by front brakes before taking the climb. I am not sure how i would have come back without the front brakes.

For me it was the first ride to Nandi. Woke up at 4.30 am, took the volvo bus to hebbal from HSR at 5.30 am. Reached hebbal at 6.15 and started cycling. On the way back hitched a ride from baskar from the base to Rammurthy nagar and then cycled back to my house. Reached home by 5 Pm. My mom said that i hae never been so dedicated even in my studies. :-)

Yogesh, Thanks for explaining the situation.  Its a shame the police (Karizmas?) weren't spread out all over the hill (top, bottom, middle) so that they could radio ahead a description and stop the guy as he came down the hill ... sorry maybe ive watched one too many police shows. :)

Shankar,
It was truly moving when I saw the army jeep come so quickly after the accident.. We all had a laugh when the medic came running from the jeep on the left side of the road to treat you while by then you had walked over to the jeep.. He came and was staring at us trying to make out who was hurt !! :)

Incidentally, there was another guy on a motor bike who also was hurt.. On my way back I and Bharani met few of his friends and they told us that this guy became unconscious when they got him to the base.. They literally had to force an auto guy to take him down and we were all thanking our stars for having the backup support that we had.I hope that guy is safe and sound.. I was literally shaking after witnessing you and that guy and it took me a long while to calm down..

You regret missing the icecream ?? Get well soon and let us ride one together and I will get you one !! (But plz make sure you get a good night sleep the day before) :)

Yeah I remember that. I limped along to the other side of the jeep and he came back around to where I was. And I remember glimpses of the auto guy and loading the motorbiker into it. Without the army jeep I'd be writhing in pain. The medicines they gave are also of special mention here. Guess they were some super quick heal stuff. The very fact that I am able to type this email now is such an amazing thing! I cant thank them enough for sure!

I remember the girl (lady?, priya?, mrs.anand?) saying I was not huffing and puffing at all and I could climb better since it was my fourth time. I must have slowed you guys down significantly cuz I was so sleepy. Wonder what would have happened if I had not washed my face before going downhill *shudders at the thought and thanks heavens*.

And for the ice cream, just tell me when and where. :) I swear to god I'll never miss my sleep before a long ride again!

OT: Not sure if you understand Tamil, but Paiyya is a good movie to watch. Lots of romance, good songs, and completely shot in Karnataka (Agumbe). Of course, there's Lion King and Finding Nemo - the ultimate movies of all times.

Yeah I guess bicycle dreams would be perfect now. I'll search for the torrent and watch it. George, which was the other torrent you shared?

If you understand Tamil, watch the tamil movie called 'Tamil padam'. It's basically a spoof of various tamil movies and good fun to watch. You will have a good laugh.. Another good one to watch is 'Pasanga'. Good entertainer.

If you understand American english, could try watching Madagascar ( and escape to Africa).. Very good comedy movie .. I like the dialogue in the 2nd movie where penguins say 'Who says Penguins don't fly?' ..

Yeah totally. I have decided to always ride in jeans! My favorite jeans man. Not even a scratch on the jeans. And god bless jack and jones for making that Tshirt almost like a sweatshirt! Lucky me..

I used to ride only in 3/4ths and with sandals. Guess this teaches me a thing or two about clothing then! :)

Shankar

I completely agree with yogesh about monkeys and how well they behave "even when they plan and execute to snatch that snacks".
I had called my wife and kid to nandi so that i can return by car. There was this monkey that came from nowhere
and snatched the LAYS packet from my kid . It all happened in 2 or 3  seconds and she was never HURT anywhere.
It came ! it took what it wanted without doing anything else :-) Sure that karizma idiot has to learn few lessons from these monkeys.

I think it was - Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.. the song Pehla nasha in it
was the first
complete slow motion song in a film.
