Most Indian offices suck when it comes to this. Unless there is a gym there usually is no shower. My office hasn't one and I sweat like crazy not to forget the odor! I have clubbed my cycling to office with a pool close to office. I cycle early in the morning so it is pleasant listening to the FM to avoid any of the cacophony of Autos trying to speed past you (taking it personally! ;)).

To avoid the odor u can drink a lot of water - it helps and is excellent for ur health also. I carry my can of deo also. When u wanna avoid it all just cycle at relaxed pace and relish Bangalore! :) It still is beautiful in the mornings! :)

It is surprising the amount of good will you earn in the process. Just the other day on my way to office I stopped to have some coconut water (a blessing!!!). I have been there before and possibly the guy sees me go by daily. He actually gave me a complimentary coconut which was rather sweet both literally and otherwise! ;) So get started and earn a lot of good will with loadsa carbon credits! :D

On my way to work I wear my regular office outfit with a T shirt, carry my office shirt in my backpack.
I find that the minute I stop cycling I sweat like crazy for 5 minutes - sweat visibly running down my face.
I wait for 5 minutes and the sweating stops and I dry out. Then I change into the office shirt, rinse the T shirt in tap water (no soap needed) and hang it out to dry on the office terrace.

I then just wash my face, and that's enough to make me feel totally fresh. I don't shower - there's no need. Also have Eau de Cologne in the office just in case, but nobody's ever complained about my BO so far in 8 years so I I've never used this.
I land up in office before the rest of the mob does, so I get to do all this in peace.

For my ride home I wear the aforesaid T shirt (which has dried out by now), or sometimes the office shirt itself if it is comfortable enough.
Some days on my way to office I wear cycling shorts, sports shoes and T shirt, carry all my office clothes in my backpack.

If you can't wash the T shirt and dry it, just pack it in a plastic bag and shove it into your backpack.
Carry a second T shirt for the ride home, or wear the office shirt itself.

If I need to get anywhere where I need to look presentable the instant I arrive, I just stop cycling about 5 minutes away from the destination and walk slowly the rest of the way. This gives me time to stop sweating and dry out a bit. Also wear a shirt that won't show the sweat.

Notice I changed the  subject. Thought the issue was too important to be hiding under 'Rohan and Nikhil in the news'.

Das

Way to go Das.

Fortunately for me my office has a shower so I usually take a shower before I start work.

But I still face a problem when i have to attend meetings in other peoples offices.

Will try some of your suggestions next time around.

8 yrs! :) Wow!!!

Yeah I guess the the clothes are always a problem. I have several cotton T shirts (thanks to the many events, marathon, car free day, etc!) and a coupla shorts. For office clothes I am lucky I have setup a wardrobe at office (taken an extra drawer for myself... :)). Only trouble is no place to dry stuff up since terrace is locked.

I think offices should encourage all this and make cycling a fun experience... Most big companies have a dormitory and attached showers. Hope things change for the rest also soon! :)

BTW I noticed this morning that the beautiful stretch of trees on Sarjapur road alongside Kormangala 1st block have been uprooted. Those trees took ages to grow to their splendor and all gone in a coupla hours. Thanks to the road widening project. Cycling in the sun is a pain and with the tree cover depleting at this rate in the hands of extremely incompetent people... huh!!!

Hi Vishwanath,

You could lug along a change of clothes and a can of good antiperspirant with you. You can start early so that you have some 30 mins at least before you go in so that u can dry off before you change

some stuff that I found useful

- use warm water to cleanup
- a quick sponge bath can be pretty effective
- if you dont have a shower bike a little slowly, you sweat less
- use a deo if you can .. not an antiperspirant
- carry a change of clothes
- leave earlier in the day
- drinking water before you start definitely helps :)

As Mayank said ''I think offices should encourage all this and make cycling a fun experience... Most big companies have a dormitory and attached showers. Hope things change for the rest also soon! :)"

Atleast my company is moving in that direction....towards encouraging biking!!
We are a small company and we are relocating to a new place. And my bosses were obliging enough to fit new showers in the bathrooms :)

If the word(Biking) spreads its natural for others to follow suit!! and there are a couple of my colleagues who want to bike to work!!

cheers

good advice Das ! Glad you changed the subject :)

Lots of companies are looking to change and accomodate biking. Currently HP and Accenture are looking to install bicycle parking lots. Varista (the place where Modi works) has quite a few bikers who bike to work !
Good stuff.

I'm proud of my institute, in this regard. We have a dedicated cycle parking lot. (It didn't have poles or trees to tie ur cycle to, but now it does after a relocation). And in fact, we have more cycles parked there than the rest of the vehicles combined. We have showers, and places to dry clothes.

regards,
Sud
