Hi,

Does anyone know of a way (hopefully, web-based) of converting google-maps directions to gpx format and then figuring out the elevation profile from it ?

thanks,
bd

I use the gmap2gpx bookmarklet to get a gpx out of google maps, and
then use gpsvisualizer.com to add/lookup the elevations.

Thanks Sreepathi. The gmaptogpx bookmarklet tool, does create the gpx, but when I load it into gpsvisualizer.com, it throws an error -

Error: insufficient profile data

You requested a profile with distance as the X-axis and altitude as the Y-axis. Unfortunately, your input data does not contain sufficient information to plot those parameters.

If you need altitude data, try enabling the "Add SRTM elevation data" option in the profile input form

Anyhow, I found some basic information about the route's elevation here:

http://www.geocodezip.com/v3_elevation-profile_distance.html

It is fairly easy to use, by adding the key waypoints, which are markers in google maps sense and easy to manipulate.

I use the http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/profile_input

There is a provision to enter "URL of data on the Web". I just pluggin the full link from google maps route and it gives the elevation profile.

LMGTFY is a shorter answer, and looks even cheekier !!
Anyway, my bad - I should've mentioned what I'd tried and not found, more clearly.
