Hi all,
I dropped my draft to write my 2 annas worth on.recent rough events..... even though it events had actually altered my outlook and composure drastically!!!! my family said and I felt it too!
instead the new energy for monthly rides appealed to me again.

so for sat 28 april i will do a ride on western side of Bangalore, open to all who can well do a 150 km ride in the summer heat.
the roads and scenery is superb, some dust and gravel and some unforeseen road conditions for short stretches here and there, but mainly excellent roads, low traffic except main Magadi road where traffic has iincreased enormously.but on the actual Magadi=Kanva loop is is all quiet! village shops and borewells available along  the entire distance.

starting point: magadi road / Nice road junction; 6 AM (Hirohalli)
route: TG-Halli - Magadi - Ramnagar - Kanva reservoir - Magadi -Tg Halli- Hirohalli
distance: +/- 150km
suitability: Road bikes and MTB's

for  both sorts of riders there are countless variations or additional loops one can fit in almost anywhere.
I had reccied the route some 2 years back and last monthi did part of it again. there are 3 excellent bathing spots on the way:
Kanva dam,    and manchanbele dam on the way home for good resting before going back to the city.

I will give further details and route map in a few days.
unless force majeur acts up  i will do the ride

cheers Georg

Sounds like an awesome route , and looks like it partially  overlaps the 200k brevet route. Summer showers have already started, I think it should be cooler by next week.

Hi Georg,

Is this the approximate route? http://g.co/maps/bt4jc
I couldn't get it to 150kms. I definitely want to do the ride but I
want to avoid the summer heat. If possible can we do it in the night
unless the weather continues to be the way it is these days!
Do you plan to ride fast?

Super! The epic monthly rides have thus begun. Great stuff Georg. I'll have to skip this as I'm off to agumbe for that long weekend. Kickass route. I recently rode around the Manchanbele dam and the climbs aren't nearly as difficult as they seem.

adithya,
youhad fogotten the bit form NICE road junction with magadi road, so finally it soes add up to 150km. but on the way you can take in a lot more small loops. those who love some speed can also ride the Mysore highway form Ramnagar to Channapatna, or does who want to add miles can go from ramnagar down towards Kanakapura and take the road back to Channapatnas form there, nicely through the hills also.
countless options and variations possible.

we will leave as early as possible, latest at 6 am form the nice road, but I will not ride through the night at all. because you will not see anything except nocturnal animals crossing the road! for me the landscape experience has priority value! It shall be a ride for everybody, i will not ride at roadies training speed but so that we can chat together , rest under a tree , have a swim here and there. etc. i hope our driver Mohan will accompany in the car to give support or a lift to sun affected individuals. also people who want to ride only 100km can come along and take short cuts and we will meet them again on t he road later . thats how i see it.

cheers Georg

I am not 100% sure of availability next week. But If I am available,
I'll be coming with my car (I'll be the driver). Rohini (my wife )
would be doing the cycling, and my sons might cycle stretches off the
main road depending on energy levels. My elder one should be able to
pull off some distances, younger maybe joy rides near where we rest.

Good to drum up support now. Our month end rides were unequivocal
successes , many new folks really fell in love with cycling , and
people have made a lot of lasting friends. Good that we have folks
reviving the concept.

All new folks in the group, unless you are a committed roadie ,
Georg's routes are unequivocally great. Nice scenery, good climbs,
downhills. You'll have a good biking workout and will be able to see
places that you likely didn't know existed in your backyard.
My journey into leisure long distance riding started with doing the
legendary Georg-Anchetti route in Aug 2009, and that route is still my
favourite in terms of a good cycling route around Bangalore.

Time to drum up support for monthly rides. Its really great if we can
have a group of folks who will regularly ride these month end long
rides.

I am assuming the 4 water bodies are the rest point.
ORR-Magadi Road junction should be the start/stop/meeting point.

There is no registration process. Just reply to this mail, we'll keep
consolidating a list of expected people. No registration fees either.
Starting point is the Magadi Road/Nice Road junction. Come west on
Magadi road till you hit this spot.

I might drive down Nice road to reach this spot. But cyclists need to
come via Magadi Road. How is the area near Binny mills ? Is that road
fine now, or still a lot of Metro constructions?

BTW 6 am might be too early for me( and I think many others). We might
need to keep in mind that we start at around 6:15 or so.

Guys who are coming via Magadi Road to the NICE junction, can ride
together from the Chord Road/Magadi Road intersection.

BTW nobody responded to my question on the road condition around where
Magadi Road starts.

So basically, I volunteer motor support here if required. Otherwise, I will be happy to ride my bicycle! Georg?

Hi all,
here comes the map with routes marked, little heavy file though!
you can all have a close look at it at home. i am trying to make a print out tomorrow of reasonable size, say 1;100'000. that is half the paper sized of the 1;50'000 original survey map. will keep you posted on this. if possible will take a couple of such prints with me on saturday.

follow the red arrows to magadi, turn south.......
for those who want to take shorter routes and do pic- nic extensively until the long range riders come back to manchanbele dam there are many options for short cuts;

green: turn left before Ramnagar and ride up the Arkavati valley along the stream.to manchanbele village...... with further options

yellow: turn right at km point 13 and cut west across lovely hills towards hosur village to joint the long range riders on their way back form Kanva dam. lovely granite hillocks here to rest and climb!

blue 1: cut off the Channapatna highway bit and ride form ramnagar directly towards kanva dam

blue 2: take right turn at mattikeri and go towards YG gudde reservoir and explore those smaller roads. I have not been on these roads.
the funny thing is that my maps are older than the dam and not even its construction is mentioned. saw the reservoir only on google recently while exploring my recent sunday ride to huliyurdurga 35 km south west of magadi.

the icing on the cake  at the end when we are little tired perhaps and need some cooling: the ride down the forest valley from Viragaudanagoddi to Manchanbele with the last bathing point en route! further via big banyan tree back to Tavarekere and NICE road again!

ok, have a good look at prepare yourself according to your ambitions.

6.15 very latest departure, otherwise late comers have to ride litlle faster. i can say i will not ride fast that saturday, particularly not the first bity to magadi. so everyone can catch up !

see you there, georg and family!

Figure out how to get to the start point!. There is a road via Chamrajpet/Binny Mills  which I used long back but a part of that road may not be great, with the metro constructions.

for route profiles:
just check the altitudes marked on t he survey map in small black print and also look at the contours in brown.
bsically strting point is lowest, downhill to TG halli and uphill again, fuirther downhill and one more uphill to Magadi.
magadi to Ramnbagar is mainly down hill, to kanva reservoie is more or less level, again uphill back to magadi, and again downhill to Manchanbele village and uphill to big banjan tree and a little more uphill back to starting point.

basically bangalore is always higher than anything in its surroundings except the hill tops. so every morning starting from bangalore it is always downhill going further away and evening returning it is uphill again, this is the basic thing for rides out of bangalore!

I think the road should be open (or u would see diversion arrows). I
only mentioned that the 2km stretch around there is full of
constructions and debris because of the metro constructions.

Hi all,
please put your mobile nos. to your name in the list, will be helpful at the  starting point to check if everybody has arrived or still on the way .... etc.
so saturday is  close , see you tomorrow morning at 6.15 at NICE road junction on magadi road.. i will leave with family in the car  from home  Vasanthnagar and go through sheshadripuram via platform road, rajajinagar entrance, taeke a left there and reach magadi  road near the chord road junction, cross chord road and go all the way chord road to outer ring road junction in the valley with the bridge, cross, up the hill to sun kadakatte and further to Nice road junction. up that hill out of the valley is a bit hard and steep, hope there are not too many buses at the time, but once up  it is easy rolling to the Nice road junction starting point.
of course in the car we will caryy cycle pump, some tools, and buisciuts and  water. on the way we can buy some bananas and carry them  in the car.
but please all carry spare tube and puncture repair kit with you on the bike also.
whom we meet on the road to start point we might give a lift or just encourage.....!

cheers, georg

Kudos to Georg for organizing the ride. Morning brought a change in
plans since Rohini couldn't come for the ride. Kids had an extended
play session yesterday so wasn't sure if they would go. But we ended
up participating early in the ride

1) Indicated Aditya, Radhika and Sohan I may not turn up. Told them to go ahead
2) Kids were eager, so marshalled them, went to Magadi , crossed the
Dipankar set of riders, and all our riders to reach Magadi where
Radhika (Georg's wife) was waiting.
3) Vedant insisted on riding as well , so had to let both my kids
ride. Requested sohan to give company to Vaibhav while slowly riding
behind Vedant. Some other rider (whose name I've forgot - my apologies
mate, I was very tired). gave company to Vedant. After one uphill too
many Vedant gave up (he must have done about 4+ including some uphill
stretches - though I might be wrong , i was focusing on safety and
slow driving + I might be naturally biased towards my son).
4) Vaibhav gave up at about 13km , tried motivating him to rest and
continue but this was his 1st ride with a support car, comfort was at
hand and he didn't want to let go.
5) Tried going to the reservoir u sing the short cut, but kids got
restless and I was exhausted too, so had to leave for home, still
reached at about 1pm.

Day was great for riding, though sun came out later on, but the
villages on the route were fabulous (As you would trust any route that
Georg comes up with)

Special thanks to the folks who gave my sons' company

Also good to see Ravi and his 14 year old son, Shrisha riding this
route. Hope to see more people in future rides.

Regards
Chiddu

Hi All,

It was a wonderful ride! The weather was awesome in the morning session, though not at its best during the afternoon. The routes were very scenic passing through lovely villages and mostly traffic free. I will try to post a ride report soon. People who have taken photos, please share with the group.

Many thanks to Georg for organizing a great ride, and for patiently handling us newbies. Thanks to all the fellow riders to for making the ride very enjoyable.

Btw - The ride was 200km for me.. my first double century!

Shreeju

Hi
Thanks a lot George for organizing the wonderful ride on Saturday.
For me it was a new experience. Though I could not do the full
distance on the cycle, nevertheless it was an awesome experience.

Hi All,
This ride was a total of 210 km for me. Though I have done a 200km
ride before I've never done a ride before that has been this arduous.
However, this doesn't mean it was not enjoyable. The day started off
well with overcast skies and the cool fresh air of the morning
whispering in our ears. The road between TG Halli and Ramnagara was
bewitching. There was a dampness in the air and enchanting woods on
either side of the road. The terrain till Kanva reservoir was largely
downhill. The sun no longer played truant and the terrain was no
longer downhill. At about 20km from the starting point I could feel my
energy levels plummet drastically. I stopped immediately and sat down
on the ground and greedily ate my biscuits. However, the desolate
rocky landscape and with darkness closing in I was filled with despair
and decided to hitch a ride cal home from the starting point. After
pedalling for what seemed am eternity I reached the starting point.
Shortly afterward I took a break and plunged into the chaotic city
traffic. The traffic that I normally hate created in me a sense of
belonging. The fatigue was no longer there as instincts of survival in
the traffic took over. I rode the remaining 25km to my home
comfortably, on the way bidding goodbye to Ashutosh, Sohan and
Shreeju. A big thank you to Georg for organising this wonderful ride.

Thanks,
Karthik.
