01. Mathematical Art: Chaos and Complexity
There have been a wide range of any human activities concerning the
term of "Art and Mathematics". Regarding directly to the historical
root, there are a great deal of discussions on art and mathematics and
their connections. As we can see from the artworks in the Renaissance
Age, let's say Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) did a lot of art pieces
in the mathematical precisions. Even more, the works of Luca Pacioli
(1145-1514), Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), and M.C. Escher (1898-1972)
have shown us that there are geometrical patterns laid upon artistic
artifacts. It is clear that at some time, some mathematicians have
become artists, often while pursuing their mathematics (Malkevitch,
2003).

For this purpose, a soft paper has been released in the institute,
entitled "What is the Relatedness of Mathematics and Art and why we
should care?". You can read it online in the URL:
http://www.bandungfe.net/wp2005/2005k.pdf

For Indonesian readers, there is also a radio discussions about this
issue. The discussions present BFI researchers Hokky Situngkir, Rendra
Suroso, and Deni Khanafiah with a well known Bandung artist and art
curator, Bambang Subarnas. The talkshow is recorded in B-Radio Station,
Bandung. You may download and listen to the discussion here:

02. SAPTONO: an experiment with nonsense
Have you ever amused with literatures from postmodernism? If you are
uncomfortable with a lot of sophisticated analogies and difficult
terminologies, you are about to know that most of them can be
categorized nonsense, or probably just a kind of poem with no important
meanings and sociological impact. This has been an interesting thing in
Dept. Cognitive Science BFI and you may want to see the paper about it.
The paper presents Saptono, a random essay generator. It is
linguistically sufficient to generate most cases of sentences which may
appear in specific natural language, yet it is merely
syntactically-driven. Despite its randomness, Saptono can still
generate essays similar to writings found in certain field of the study
of culture and contemporary philosophy.

The paper can be accessed online at URL:

03. BULETIN BFI is going to reach you!
Bandung Fe Institute is now printing the BuletinBFI, a Indonesian
periodic media to broaden the research issue in soft articles, means,
you won't be hit by mathematical equations here. The BuletinBFI is
published in Indonesian, and the current issue is a special edition
introducing the interesting Econophysics. In the bulletin, you will
find a lot of things from the short history of econophysics to the
current research on econophysics in finance, management, and
macroeconomics. The writers are BFI scholars and a guest author,
Dietrich Stauffer, a well known sociophysicists. There are also two
interviews with Steve Keen (author of "Debunking Economics") and a
pioneer of econophysics, Marcel Ausloos. As it has been told, the
