01. Indonesian Outlook 2014

Due to the beginning of the research year 2014, for Indonesian readers, the institute has published online the Indonesian Outlook 2014. The outlook is free for public access and written in Indonesian as its main purpose for Indonesian readers and decision makers: http://compsoc.bandungfe.net/kartografi-indonesia/outlook2014.html

As in the previous year, the outlook is entitled Wawasan Indonesia 2014 and delivers online a dozen infographics with visualizations and analyses based on social complexity researches in the institute for free public access. The outlook is published as the Complexity Calendar of 2014. The institute invites interested readers to download Indonesian Outlook 2014 as a calendar for free and self-print it for your own use: "Wawasan Kompleksitas Indonesia 2014". However, readers are also welcomed to buy the exclusive hard-copy of the calendar from the institute's store XITYZONE: http://xityzone.com/shop/aksesoris/kalender-wawasan-indonesia-2014/

02. Presidential Notes on Research Year’s End 2013

“The year of 2013 has become an exciting year in the institute for implementation of research works outside the domain of scientific research. Throughout the year, via the researchers, the institute has been collaborating with those, from craftsmen, students, academicians, to the activists and bureaucracy. All with the spirit of sharpening public and social life through scientific endeavors. Especially today, as friends and colleagues from the Initiatives of Archipelago Cultural Initiatives (IACI), being the motor of the Indonesia first digital and open cultural heritage library in www.budaya-indonesia.org commemorating their 6th year of services. The database has contained thousands of digital media capturing the diversity of Indonesian traditional culture in the country involving thousands of participants across the archipelago. One important result people in remote area now can enjoy is the “Weaving Automata” that has been launched also this year in Southern Kalimantan, Indonesia.

This is however, a great example of the activity may be called as Cultures-based Innovation, a nice example too on how modern and (indigenous?) traditional culture can inspire one another via technology. The key theme here is however, that we should see “culture as information”, and “tradition as data”. By seeing culture as information, we do not observe culture merely as part of the way we live in the society, but also try to see the “meaning” within the aspects of social living. In advance, by seeing tradition as data, we are excited to digest the deeper insights from what the traditional elements are expressing. It is only by having this perspective, all of the innovations as the excess of research works in the last five years can be delivered: from the fractal geometry of Indonesian traditional batik, the experimental architectural analysis on Indonesian traditional temples, the structural analyses on Indonesian traditional kingdoms, the weaving automata, and so on. The next year is waiting to witness more innovation to come since the work of the IACI has been helped by a lot of hands right now, not only from the institute’s researchers, but also the favors of the institute’s friends and even (probably) competitors.

There are also some consultative works and initiatives have been delivered throughout the year. The institute owed hands from the favor from friends in Invasa, the friends becoming the (commercial) representation of the institute right now in the capitol city, Jakarta. We are excited that in many places the appreciation of the complexity sciences are now beginning to be better every day. From the government and public sectors to the private sectors. The interesting “big data” analytical trend may contribute to this greater appreciation.

No matter what you are and where you are making a living, the appreciation of information and data is now becoming very important. This is however the heart of the idea of information age. And the more appreciation to information and data, the more we realize that conventional scientific perspective from the age of enlightenment should move forward to recognize the complexity sciences and work more in the interdisciplinary fashion.

The peak of this year’s interesting works is nonetheless the launch of “Wawasan Indonesia 2014”, an Indonesian Outlook for the incoming year of 2014. We presented this outlook by the end of the research year 2013 in hope that the year to come promises more and more interesting and exciting research activities and collaborations ahead. Yet, the year 2014 is also an important year for Indonesians, for within the year we will have democratic events of national election for executive and legislative chairs. Those events are surely events where more data will be generated reflecting how we live politically.

Let us embrace the new year 2014, as we waive the past research year of 2013. A lot of works and more opportunities are waiting for us in the future! For the country and for the sake of betterment of our humanity!
