First way: USB-connected printer. The current Samsung Universal Printer Driver is at version 3 which does not support my printer. Download version 2 and execute the installer in winXP compatibility mode. My driver showed up in the version 3 installation of the application.
Note: I had a difficult time installing the HP driver since the installer wanted to connect my printer. I let it connect to a new printer port at (note the IPv4 is a sample address) :631/printers/Samsung_ML-1740 and it resulted in a non-working printer. I ended up browsing the printer at \\192.168.1.2 where the printer showed up. I did a right-click to "connect" and specified the HP postscript driver.
I'm searching for someone who can share the samsung ml-1740 laser jet printer driver with me. HP support says that printer driver is obsolete and can't be found on their end. I no longer have my installation cd. Thanks in advance for your help.
Open Print & Scan preferences. Remove your printer from the list. CTRL- or RIGHT-click in the list and select Reset Print System. Now reinstall your printer. Be sure the printer is turned on and active (not sleeping.) See if that fixes the problem. Apple is not responsible for printers nor printer drivers. That is the responsibility of the printer's manufacturer.
I meant to say you run the script in that thread AFTER installing the driver software mentioned in the article. And it probably wouldn't hurt to reboot after installing the drivers, before running the script, just to make sure they are in place.
Also, if a printer is set up twice with different drivers it doesn't work with any of them. So you should only have one printer in Settings > Printers (per each device). You can have both driver packs installed on your system, though.
1) A Linux driver is included on the CD that comes with the printer, or it can be downloaded from Samsung.Get the Linux driver package (one package for all models from Samsung's web site.Note: You cannot just use the PPD coming with Samsungs's driver package with CUPS/Ghostscript. You must also install the proprietary Samsung driver applications, as well as the PPD.2) Or, you can try using the configuration for the Samsung ML-1710 printer, which several users have reported to work (see information page for that printer). Please see the comments in the GDI driver section below re issues with landscape printing. Consumables/Refills: toner cartridge (3,000 pages, $70 US)
gdi  (driver home page) For the ghostscript GDI driver and ML-1710 PPD: * Portrait printing is slightly off-center * Landscape printing does not work correctly; only half the page is printed, and it is offset 50% up the page.
This driver is free software.

Don't click the Blue Download Box. That will not get you legitimate drivers. Further down the page you will see Universal Print Driver. That will download from HP's site. HP bought out the Samsung printer division.
Other checking if the printer is offline I would check the Samsung links here. Click the support link which takes you to HP. I could not find drivers for your specific printer at HP. Most Samsung printers listed used the Universal Print Driver.
I wish I knew! I tried so many things. But I know I removed the existing printer driver from my computer that didn't belong. Apparently when the guy replaced my hard drive, he added a driver for a printer I didn't have. Then I downloaded the Samsung universal print driver and when I got to the screen where it said "select" your device, I checked the box next to the name of my printer. I'd previously not checked that. Sorry I can't be more detailed.
