Nokia 2720 Flip general thread

So, starting the thread about this model only.

Got two of them yesterday. Starting firmware version is 10.00.17.07 (KaiOS 2.5.2 which is what I needed).

Main impressions:

1. Very elegant look (both externally and internally), although a bit bulky for me, with dedicated keys for volume and Google Assistant.

2. Dual--nano-SIMness (TA-1175), despite all rumors that the model will be single-SIM only.

3. Awesome noise-cancellation engine during calls.

4. Working *#*#debug#*#* code.

5. Totally rootable with kdeploy + Wallace Lite 0.1 (after entering *#*#debug#*#*):

adb forward tcp:6000 localfilesystem:/data/local/debugger-socket
kdeploy -i ~/project-wallace/wallace-lite/

6. Working screenshots: press * and # combo!

7. Power-off menu that allows to restart, lock and cleanup memory (same as for the recent CAT B35 update).

8. Recovery: power up (or just insert cable) while holding Volume Up. Has a fastboot entry ("Reboot to bootloader") but makes a normal reboot instead.

9. EDL: insert cable while holding both volume keys (obviously, firehose not yet found). Don't accidentally hold the assistant key, otherwise you'll have to reinsert the battery to get it to work.
10. Has WhatsApp, Facebook and other garbage pre-installed.

11. NVRAM partition tunning (/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/tunning) has absolutely the same format as in 8110 4G. So, all IMEI manipulation tricks apply here as well.

Overall impression: I want a RAZR on the very same exact platform. And software-wise, we have a great time ahead of us. Stay tuned!

We should thank them only when they release official firmware loaders. As of now, lots of people with bricked stock 8110s can't even repair them because of lacking the firehoses or any official tools. Same threat goes for 2720.

Got mine today, as you say: nice impression internal & external.

Ordered from the Netherlands - also TA-1175, however comes pre-loaded with version 11.00.17.03, and now offers me an update to 12.00.17.01 (16.98mb).

Screenshot combination keys are still a bit buggy (some other functions also deserve improvement...), when (swiftly?) dialing * and then #, it does a screenshot, so when I tried activating debug, it first did a screenshot from my dialer-screen :)
[I was wondering how you found so quick the key-combination for screenshot, you probably just had the same incident as me ;) ]

Haven't yet tried rooting (at least, debug icon shows), I wonder if we need to worry that updating to v12 will disable engMode etc.?

got my 2720 since yesterday and i am so far very impressed, the big keys are a blessing and battery management (with whatsapp and email checked every 5 minutes) is so much better compared to the 8110

one thing: turning off the second sim card doesnt work, it will make the phone lose network completely

adb shell setprop persist.radio.multisim.config none

any workaround here ? thanks is advance

The interesting part is, they offered updating from 11... to 12..., and it was 16+mb, I didn't update then. And now, they offer from 11... to 20... and it's just 9+mb.

size of the update from V12. to 20. was around 17 mb here in germany

anyway, i cant see any improvements or changes except that in gmaps my location is no longer found ;(

Dear lucky N2720 owners, be so kind and share some info on external display behaviour. AFAIK N2720 has no notification LED (?). Is the external display "always on"? Or is it "always on" at least in case of unread notification(s)? What exactly does external display show? I can see images with big time and small date or classic KaiOS notification icon (circle with number inside). Does it show anything else? What about missed calls? Is there any special kind of (bigger) notification for missed calls? Is external display in any way configurable? In case of incomming call, what exactly does external diplay show? Name only? Both name and number? Thank you a lot.

No, it's not always on, it only turns on for notifications about 1 second. But you can activate it at any time by pressing the outer button. It displays various icons for missed calls, emails, alerts and volume.

Incoming calls are displayed with number and name, Of course, only if it was saved in the phone book

Pictures are not displayed !

Some of these icons are larger than others, email for example. I assume these graphics are slightly modifiable. Messages themselves, ie in text, are not displayed.

The Nokia 8110 4g I found for 40-45euro brand new. But the 2720 is every where almost double the price of 99€

Thanx for your quick answers. 

Is the external display capable to show more notifications at once? For example missed call AND email AND whatsapp message? Are these notifications with or without numbers?

Another question: Is external display colour or monochrome? I can see only pictures showing white text on black background, but in one video there is green incomming call icon. If external dispalay is colour, are colours used in some useful way? E.g. different colours for different notifications?

Is there custom dictionary for text prediction and call blocking for customizable incomming call numbers (both not present on N8110 4G) ?

Didn't look into it yet.

I would try completely removing that line from the /system/build.prop, this was actually the official way the single/dual SIM devices were differentiated in the 8110.

Please note, trying the above would modify your system partition, which will disable future OTA updates, so, consider backing up your system partition before modifying.

If you do try it, please don't forget to post the results :)

how's the battery performance, please? I'm still wondering which phone I should buy - 800 tough vs 2720 flip - and I'd like your opinions regarding the phone behaviour.

I bought the CAT35 a few weeks ago and after an unpleasant experience, I had to return the device (Ivan was right...).

Ditto on Martin's dilemma there also. I am torn between the flip and the tough. Essentially I think internally they are almost identical looking at the spec sheet so I think it comes down to looks. UK based by the way.

The 8110 2720 and 800 though are the same machines internally.

I bought a 2720 because the volume button and the big keyboard and it's a complete other device then my 8110.
It's so more usable just because the keyboard is bigger.

Battery is 2 days max for me.

Did anyone dare to test, if the recovery is usable for other nokias too? Hardware seems to be quite similar and also screen resolution is the same..

I'm not sure if I should switch from banana with gerda to 2720 or 800 tough.. Are there plans to release (or even already pre-alphas) of gerda for those devices in near future?

ich habe das NOKIA 2720 Flip seit ca. 2 Wochen und finde es sehr gut.

Ich wollte nun die OmniSD App installieren aber es funktioniert nicht so wie es bei Banahackers.Net in der Anleitung gezeigt wird.

Mit dem Code kann ich das Debugg Symbol in die Statusleiste bringen, aber das Menü "Debugging" ist nicht unter den Einstellungen zu finden. Somit kann ich das USB-Debuging nicht aktivieren und das Gerät wird nicht in der ADB Liste am PC angezeigt.

Was ist der Fehler ????

You'll not get the Developer menu until you perform a privileged reset. But you don't need that menu when you have the debug icon, you can use ADB and Devtools access right away.

hallo erst mal,  aber wenn das handy mit aktiven Symbol am PC anstecke wird es nicht unter den aktiven ADB decices angezeigt. Daher gehe ich davon aus das was falsch läuft. Evtl. mach ich ja einen FFehler mit den ADB Tool.

This means that there's a problem either with USB cable or the ADB drivers. After the *#*#debug#*#* code is entered, the 2720 must be visible as an ADB-enabled device.

Hey my flip just got an update, it's on Kai 2.5.2 (sa!me as before) 21.00.17.01 now. After the update Kai installed Facebook again (you can uninstall that)

My bank's site login works now, and Twitter is gone from the store for me.

So I think it's a web/firefix framework update. The rest seems normal nothing new.

I hope the random shutdowns my device had are over now.

Has anyone tried sync'ing their google calendar and confirmed that it does or does not work correctly?  Also - are you able to jump out to SMS messages while in a call, and then return back?  Similar, does the browser have the same menu option as the 8110 did to jump out to SMS messages and back to where you left off?

if ever hmd never releases a gecko update to the nokia 8110 4G and does give an update to the 2720 flip is it possible to port the update to the 8110? 

the flip has a closing mechanism and the 8110 has a sliding mechanism to turn on the screen... so.. porting might be better if the 2720 is used...

I am using the Nokia 2720 Flip for a week now and something is really bothering me: the volume keys when locked keep pushing my volume up or mute.
Do you guys know of a way to disable the volume keys from working when the flip is closed? Or maybe even to disable them at all times?

Hi. I just ordered a Nokia 2720 for my 80+ year old father. He only wants clamshell cellphones and only uses them for phone calls.

The issue here is that he received a Amazfit Bip U Pro (Mi Fit), and I am trying to figure out if there is a way to install a fitness app on the Nokia 2720 so he can see the data relating to his smartwatch on it. Is it possible? Can someone please help or point me in the right direction.
