Hello, I'm searching a mobile phone to use in job as feature phone, and I have this mobile in mind.

I'm a fan of the classic Nokia mobile phones, they're the best, and now I need one device with a good battery life (not the tipicall "one day life" of smartphones), and, if it's possible, with WhatsApp and GPS.

So, I discovered this remake of the amazing Nokia 8110, and then, this project to improve it, and I would like to know some things before buy it. It would be great if you can answer me and help me.

First, what about the battery life? How long can hang the mobile just using it for some calls and WhatsApp?

And, about the banana hack: I saw in the main web that there are two methods to install the hack, the safe (which not interrupt updates) and the extreme (which does it). Will WhatsApp run in both of them? I would prefere to get the updates working (I think always is better to have them to fix bugs and something else). What are the other differences between both them?

Does the telephone have a good functioning? I read something about it was a little lagged. Does the hack improve the perfomance?

Thank you for your help, and of course, for your amazing work. Greetings!

Hello David BS, and welcome to BananaHackers!

- Regarding battery life with WhatsApp and GPS on, you can expect 2-3 days out of the battery.

- The 'banana hack' thing is called jailbreaking :). WhatsApp will run or not depends on the firmware version on your device, if you have v12, you will have to flash 'apiupdate' after jailbreaking to allow WhatsApp to work. On the other hand, if you have v13, it's just a matter of using the safe method and installing WhatsApp through OmniSD.

- I highly recommend using the safe method of jailbreaking for a beginner. The 'unsafe' one modifies your system partition, as such, not allowing the installation of OTA updates on top of the existing system because of a 'Signature mismatch' (unless you are well prepared for an emergency by dumping all your partitions beforehand and are willing to get your hands dirty :)).

- The phone functions well, but yes, it is not really a fast phone despite having an entry-level smartphone chipset inside. The 'hack' requires a bit of basic Linux knowledge, so if you don't, please do not do it :)

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your answer. I'm a little confused, I thought the firmware versión could be updated any and time, so despite having the v12 version, it was possible to update it and work with the v13 process. It's possible to know the version before buy the device? I suppose that is better to have the v13, really?

Does the "unsafe" mode of jailbreaking have any advantaje versus the "safe" mode?

Finally, I have Linux knowledge, is not a problem. I'm just "noob" in the jailbreaking world xD. Anyway, There is a tutorial to do it, really?

Thank you very much again for your answer and help!

I got v12 on mine when I first unboxed it, but it depends on the stock, if it is manufactured before October (I think) it will come with v13, newer than that v13/v14. It really doesn't matter which version you have, all versions can be jailbroken and rooted.

About the advantages of the unsafe jailbreak, there is no benefits really.

Also, to clarify, 'jailbreak' here means removing the package signature checks, so you can install our community apps and also your own. 'root' is a whole different thing :)

Yeah many people get that mixed...

-- jailbreak --> allows you to install or develop CERTIFIED apps. You don't need it if you only want to install 'web' or 'privileged' apps. (but: whatsapp = certified)
-- rooting --> gives root privileges on the 'linux side' -- needed, if you want to manually delete or modify system-files.

So if you want whatsapp you have to jailbreak, for omnisd too -- but if you only want to install a filemanager or jio's pdfviewer --> those are installable without jailbreak if you use webide or 'make-kaios-install'.

Some time ago there was no easy way to root v13 -- so it was best to keep it on v12 (or do a complicated manual upgrade).
Those times are over now - all v11-v13 are rootable easily with the 'newer' tricks (kaiosExtension) - and even (asian) v14 seems to have this 'backdoor'.

The same goes for safe/unsafe jailbreak... the unsafe jailbreak was just the 'first/old' way to do it -- noone should do it that way now.
(only reason to do it 'the old way' would be if you want to do it on other devices than Nokia 8110 where the new way doesn't work - Jio seems to need it)

Alright then, thank you again to all for your help and info. I'm going to buy a new one then the next month.

Just two final doubts (at this time xDD):

- I have read here something about installing to the 8110 de Gerda OS. What exactly it is? A parallel project/alternative way to "jailbreak" the phone?

- And finally, what about "hacking" other mobile phones? Would this project work with a Nokia 3310, or other devices?

Thank you and have a nice day!

GerdaOS is a custom ROM for the 8110 4G, JioPhone 1/2. It aims to improve privacy and functionality. It is currently in ALPHA state so only flash/use it if you have the guts.

If you're referring to GerdaOS Project, it can only be used with KaiOS devices that have ADB functionality/test-keys compatible recovery.
