Just saw The Fear of 13 play at the Donmar Warehouse in London UK (starring Adrien Brody) about a dude who is wrongfully placed on death row for a murder and when a writer comes to write his "life story" the main character quotes the first sentence of CATCHER ("If you really want to hear about it" etc etc) and it made me wonder if anyone on this list is still alive lol.

Some of us joined in 2008! How many of us go all the way back to the usenet listserv?

Anyway, Hi! Hope you are alive! How many of you have I met? I remember Amber and Jim. Anyone else (that is still alive...I met Will Hochman obviously before he passed)?

xoxo,

Chris K

I don’t remember when I joined but I wasn’t on usenet. I’m 74. Tell me, I recently saw an ad online for a book called ‘Sacrilege’ by JD Salinger. Is it really his?

Great to hear from Chris and anyone on this list.

Sacrilege does not look legit. It was self-published using Amazon's Create Space. Odds are someone is just hijacking Salinger's name. It's hard to know without getting and seeing what's there, though, as they may be illegally republishing short stories, etc.

Howdy Chris K,

Because of location moves and life events I think that my original membership to this listserv was in 1997, perhaps earlier by a year. Will Hochman helped me with my college application essay that referenced Catcher and even more so Franny & Zooey, that application would have been submitted in 1997. I'm now in my mid-forties and seem to have managed to not eat too many bananas yet. Ages ago I met Cecilia and also Chris K. I never had the opportunity to meet Will in person although I contributed to the scholarship fund they established in his name after his passing. As a first-generation college student from a rural agrarian/manufacturing background this listserv was a window into another possible world. I'm still a student, working now on a PhD and have immense gratitude for the kindness of the strangers turned colleagues here.

Swimmingly,
Amber

'Sacrilege' sounds apt.

– Sonny

(another one of the oldies from the Stephen Foskett mailing list time,
before Tim O'Connor took over – from the time of Matt Kozusko, Will
Hochman and, later, of course, Scottie Bowman and Ceceila and Jim and
others. Good to see familiar names – Chris, Steven, Jim, Amber – show
up suddenly.

Time it was, and what a time it was..

Dear Bananafish,
How delightful to hear from you all! I have such fond memories of the discussions back and forth.

Sonny, do you remember the year you joined? I can only safely say for myself it was at least as far back as 1997, but not sure if earlier. All the names you mentioned are familiar to me and although I rarely posted, being just a high school student back then, I was (and am!) so appreciative of the space. I learned a great deal from reading everyone's musings.

Jim, I do believe that you are correct, though it escaped my memory earlier. "Ah, Sharon Lipschutz Jim Rovira", said the [not so] young [anymore wo]man. "How that name comes up. Mixing memory and desire." [S]he suddenly got to [her] his feet. [S]he looked at the ocean. "Sybil bananafish-list," [s]he said, "I'll tell you what we'll do. We'll see if we can catch a bananafish."

Chris, Indeed orange remains my signature color since Amber = orange. And yet as I'm preparing for my February wedding I find myself gravitating towards purple (perhaps an homage to my alma mater, Agnes Scott from that application essay all those years ago). Here's the dress I've selected for the celebration.

Amber, many congratulations!

I think I joined sometime in 1995 or 1996 – I will have to check
because this was much before all the excitement about the news of the
possible publication of Hapworth...

I think more people ought to use the word "swimmingly," but it feels like an Audrey Hepburn word. Should men use it?
